You do a great job of editing your videos. A lot of people don’t realize what is involved in producing what you do. A little piece of history: I live in Michigan. When I was about 11 my uncle was providing sand for the construction upgrade of parts of the main thoroughfare from Lansing to Grayling. US 27 was undergoing the new "limited access" highway upgrading. My uncle had a 100 acre farm within about 1/2 mile of the projected new road so he assembled bull dozers and earth movers and started to excavate sand from his property. I believe it was the sand that they used to mix the concrete. After the new "Expressway" was completed past his farm he put rubber tires on one of his D-8's so he could pull a gondola from an earth mover up the new concrete road loaded with the clean sand to the next staging area. As the staging area got further away he changed the gear ratios inside that D-8 so it could travel faster. I was staying at the farm for a week during the summer of about 1961 or 1962 and went with my Aunt when she took my Uncle out to the area where he was excavating the sand. When we got there we were all surprised by one of the dozers parked in a small lake of very clear and clean standing water. Over night the place where he was removing sand had filled up with water. I came back later that day and swam in 2 1/2 feet of water. It was warm and clean and just beautiful. Just as clear as a swimming pool but with a sandy bottom. For the next 50 some years my Dad's entire family came out to that little lake for our yearly 4th of July family gettogether. Covid 19 was the end of the reunions. The lake is still there to this day. ben/ michigan

Matt, thanks for sharing the TLC going into this old gal and how you fix her aching bones. The recovery operation brought back so many memories from when I ran the Recovery Section for 123rd Support Bn. 1st Armored Division from 1987-1989. We didn’t have the luxury of coming back the next day to get the equipment so we worked through the night. I had some of the hardest working, dedicated, professional recovery crew members I ever worked with in 23 years of service. Plus we had all the gear we could need including two fully equipped M88A1’s Tracked Recovery Vehicles. I believe that with a 3:1 purchase that Komatsu would’ve easily pulled Big Boy up the hill.

Hey Matt, we use Electrical tape on the end of the cables where i work. It works great. I work mechanical maintenance in a refinery as a pipe fitter/welder. The Coker unit has 6 air Winches that use 3/4 inch cable an overhead bridge crane that runs a clam shell bucket that uses 7/8 cable. When we do change outs, We get a cable tape from electricians that's used on large diameter cables like 4/0 or bigger. It's made by scotch, it's 2in wide, it's a little thicker than normal Electrical tape and better glue i think. It works great. I mean It's made for copper cables. Why not use them on steel ones? lol. Love the videos, man.

You have a sweet running CAT. As soon as you get all the gremlins worked out of it, the ole kitty will still give you years of fun and run, all you have to do find a sand box big enough to play in😊, and maybe even find yourself a paying job somewhere to show the world old doesn’t mean useless. Thanks for the update young man.

I realize your current D8 exhaust system provides a great visual engine performance indicator, but a short stack could increase the operator comfort. I have found an appropriately sized truck drive shaft makes a durable exhaust stack. The only downside side is that it needs to be supported at the top to prevent breaking the exhaust elbow on the whistle. Keep up the good work Matt!!!

Yeah, I'm concerned Matt isn't looking after his hearing too well & will pay for this in later years (I have a degree of tinnitus & hearing loss from a mixture of running chainsaws, racing motorcycles & shooting - this despite using hearing protection in all cases).
@recolaq
@recolaq 10 месяцев назад
It is not only his hearing i'm concerned about. Constant Inhalation of exhaust fumes is very bad for your well being. Your lungs get filled with a million nano particles that go deep in and payback over time. i'm certain he is feeling pretty nasty after shoveling that dirt layer.
@GARDENER42
@GARDENER42 10 месяцев назад
@@recolaq Yeah, I've mentioned him not having exhaust evacuation in the shop & it's already starting to look stained with black diesel particulate - can't be doing his lungs any good at all. I messed up my lungs for more than a year by wearing inadequate dust protection when clearing 150 years of grime from the roof space in my house. Still not 100% five years on.

It is amazing how agile this big, old style & old machine really is compared to newer hydraulic dozers. You are doing a really good job "saving" these old machines. Good video!

Matt just got caught up on this D8 series. What a awesome project man. Quite jealous of you getting one. Love everything you did to her to get it running and all the service. Never truly understood all the functions of the pony motor. They sure had it figured out back then. Keep up the great videos. Love this channel.

Will you be showing us how the track tensioner works?
@kenore4003
@kenore4003 9 месяцев назад
Thats a really big job to repair the tensioner on this old iron. Breaking the track means pressing out a pin to separate the rail. Clint over at C&C just did a tensioner and the pin press they used is a monster and it had its work cut out to get the pin out out a track that was in better shape than these. It will be interesting to see Matt take a run at getting them apart and replacing the seals.

You are a force of nature my friend ! The old cable units are a treat to run ! The old timers around me said it "was like fighting an angry bobcat" with the hand clutch and gear shift along with the blade 😅 keep up the good work !

My Dad worked rode construction in the late 40's and early 50's. He always said the cable dozers could do a much finer grade than the hydralic dozers because you had better control with a cable. Don't know if it's true but let us know if thats your opinion. 👍

Well, that was fun! Thanks for the extra time and effort on this video. I'm sure most of us can now read you with a piece of equipment. You are "all in" on this old dozer! She sounds terrific and you've proven your resurrection skills, once again! We always enjoy a new video. Can hardly wait on your return from, editing and publishing from the show! Be well, be safe!
