Caterpillar SIXTY Rebuild Project - Disassembly Part 4 removing #1 and #2 cylinders

Well we finally get to have a look at the crankcase in the SIXTY. After much struggling we did manage to get #1 and #2 cylinders, pistons, and rods off the engine. Things in the bottom end fought me every step of the way, this poor engine isn't going to know what to do when its free again. Thanks for watching again!! If you are enjoying the series please remember to subscribe to the channel so you can keep up to the progress of it. See you in Part 5!

Thanks for stopping in Matt, it is difficult no doubt and sometimes you make a change that you think will be better but it actually makes it worse. Just wish that the keyboard warriors would understand the work that goes into recording this stuff before they open they go crazy with the typing. Watching you latest video as I type this, what will be next for caterpillar restoration content once the D4 is done?

Seized cylinders are always a challenge. The best way to do it is hydraulically. Before you get started save at least one head gasket. You just have to clean up one head. Make sure the valves are seated positively. I like to blast the trash out of the cylinder with light sand. Blow it all out and soak it down with weasel pee (PB Blaster, Nut Kracker or Sea Foam are my favorites). Put the head back on and torque it down. Then fill the cylinder completely with old crankcase oil (or transmission oil, whatever takes your fancy). Take a piece of shaft and spin out an end like a spark plug so that it will thread into the hole; a couple of flats on the outside will accomodate a wrench. Bore a hole down the center and then carefully cut a female 1/8" NPT into the opposite end (Use a good sharp tap). Thread a Lincoln grease gun or equivilant directly into the adapter and start pumping. A good grease gun can put out 3,000 psi. I came across a John Deere D that was just as hopeless as this. One piston went solid a few times but after a couple of coffee breaks (not to mention several stories about the good ol' days), and it gave a grunt and broke loose. The other cylinder wasn't so reluctant. Made kind of a mess pouring that oil out of the cylinder but the pistons came free. Took a good Sunnen hone to the cylinder. There were lots of 'freckles' but the ring lands were still good on the pistons. A new set of rings and the tractor was on its way to an otherwise complete restoration.

Our plan it to just use our big shop press and get the pistons moving. We were limited on time to get it apart while I was on a week of vacation and I live over 3 hours away from the shop. Getting things apart and assessing what parts we needed to be on the look out for was the priority for the first stage. We will get them out next week when I’m back again and keep plugging forward- thanks again for watching and the the tips

An older gentleman near me who has since passed was a wealth of knowledge. He said he would pour about an inch of diesel fuel on top of piston and light it on fire that the fuel oil would help to keep piston cool as cylinder wall would warm up slowly and fuel oil would soak down. I did that with the one of mine which was incredibly tight, I don’t know if it helped but I got it out. Oldfarmjunk101 has a video of doing that on a Farmall H.

The crank on mine had a fair amount of pitting, I polished it and I’m sure it will be fine. On mine the biggest concern is the center main with the thrust bearing surface. I took the main caps off before I even thought about turning the crank. With the main caps off I jacked under the flywheel and a little pry under the front of the crank to take pressure off and it was possible to rotate the bottom half of mains out and facilitate polishing the crank all the way around. Numbers matching may be nice but having a running one to enjoy for me would be the priority. I’ll keep watching, it brings back good memories but I’m glad it’s behind me!

Thank-You for doing this series on the Cat 60. When I worked Road Construction we never worried about numbers matching, we only cared how quickly we could return a piece of Equipment back to work which usualy ment a short block and sometimes no matter how good You take care of stuff the Companies would buy auction Equipment that would just make You shake Your head on how the previous Owners managed to crack the Block or put stress fractures completely throughout the Transmission Case.

Hope you don’t get tired of me commenting. Are the cam followers stuck in the guides, mine were stuck very tight. I hate to admit it but I broke one cam follower guide pressing the follower out. One piston took 20 ton jack in my press and heat to get it to move, kind of scary. I had an inch thick plate just slightly smaller than piston to press on as I was worried about possibility of breaking top ring land but all turned out well. The press really jumped when the piston first moved. Good luck!
