The Cathedral of San Fidenzio is located in Megliadino San Fidenzio, a fraction of the municipality of Borgo Veneto in the province of Padua in Veneto. It is located southwest of the capital.
National Monument, the current Cathedral is built on the site where the first structure stood, built in the 10th century to collect the mortal remains of San Fidenzio, third Bishop of Padua in 166. Enlarged and renovated between 1235 and 1245 in Romanesque style thanks to the contribution of Beatrice d'Este, Queen of Hungary. According to the pastoral visits of some bishops of Padua, it is said that all the walls were frescoed with frescoes of the Giotto school, the subjects of which are however unknown to us. The architectural value and the vicissitudes of its millenary history of the ancient church were irreparably demolished in 1888, to make room for the current one, designed and built preserving the architectural lines of the old monument. The current parish church, also dedicated to San Fidenzio and built starting from 1888, integrates part of the sacred furnishings of the pre-existing church, such as the valuable altars of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the marble sculptures attributed to the school. of Bonazza. And it is thanks to the skill of the painter Don Demetrio Alpago, who died in an accident while frescoing the church, and to his pupil Attilio Bordin that the interior acquires, thanks to the frescoes, even more remarkable splendor and arouses, in those who visit the temple of Christianity of this parish, admiration and amazement for so much wonder enclosed within these walls. The presbytery is higher than the floor of the nave, to allow the faithful to participate better in religious services. Leaning against the apse is the splendid high altar from 1751, with the marble statues of S. Fidenzio and S. Tommaso. To enter the crypt you go down a marble staircase; in the arches there are eight lunettes of painted metal sheet, with scenes taken from the miraculous legend of the Saint. In the middle of the nave, near the apse illuminated by three windows, there is the marble inside it houses the body of San Fidenzio.
