At least she learned Russian and became Orthodox. Not many people did that in those times. Most monarchs didn't care about the language or the religion that their people had, as long as they paid taxes. In Spain we had one of the worst cases: Amadeo I of Savoy. One popular rumor at the time said that his most used phrase was: "No capisco niente" (I don't understand anything), even when Spanish and Italian are similar languages.

It was never cleared if those babys were really from her lovers or from Peter. As they noted in the previous Video, the only child who survived birth seemed to be Peters son in both looks and temperament. Besides, while she had her lovers, Peter has really no right to complain on that point, 'cause he did the exact same thing.

@rjfaber1991
@rjfaber1991 7 лет назад
I don't think it's that unbelievable, and neither do I think he was particularly idiotic. His reforms were actually very benign, and his proposed war against Denmark-Norway could have actually significantly increased Russia's clout in Central European politics had he won it. The thing is that if you grow up as the heir to an absolute monarch, you're going to grow up with the illusion that you can do everything without making compromises to keep the nobility, the clergy and the people happy. What Peter III did wasn't necessarily bad, but the way he went about it was rather naive.
@dienamite6452
@dienamite6452 7 лет назад
I would disagree with your point about absolute monarchy. To justify the rule of an absolute monarch was by the use of divine right. This right meant that the ruler was chosen by God to do his bidding. At this point you might say: 'so he/she can do anything, so what is your point?'. Divine right also made absolute monarchs more punishable then normal people. No matter your high birth, you would be punished harsher for what you did in life then a person of lower birth. This means that if a ruler ruled unjust or unfair. He would be punished by God more harsh, for they where chosen by God to do his bidding. It might seem to most that most rulers will still do their own thing. But let us not forget that it is 17th and 18th century and most rulers still were very religious. My point with this is to show that an absolute ruler isn't able to do everything they want. Not only due to the use and justification by divine right, but also that they still depend upon groups like the aristocracy. It also could be that you meant an enlightened despot. And that is 'something different'. Not that much actually. Just an interesting question to think about. Would you rather have an absolute monarch or a dictator ruling your country, if you could only choose between those two options? There is a difference between the two type of rulers and that is divine right.
@nathanbrown8680
@nathanbrown8680 7 лет назад
+DieNamite Depends on which divine right. Any monarchy based on divine right will be limited by the religion supporting it and they're not interchangeable. What can the monarch not do without the mandate of heaven passing to someone else? Or rather what does he think he can't do since only Jewish kings ever seem to actually be told when and why the mandate of heaven passes from them. Unfortunately they also pretty much never listen. I'm not going to go into which divine rights are better or worse than secular dictatorships, but there are definitely religions on in both categories.

It isn't that history is boring. It's history taught in schools is boring because they simplify it so much that half the time it's just propaganda. You know, where one side is clearly right, the other clearly wrong. Or people in the past doing things because they must be stupid. When they basically dumb it down so much that it becomes only suitable for small children yet they're presenting it to teens and adults then yes it's boring.

+DaveD or when they insist on focusing on the dates, numbers and stick to the bureaucratic explaination. The school version of this video (if they mentioned it at all) would probably be something like: "Peter 3, 7th tzar of Russia, ruled from 9-1-1762 to 9-6-762, overthrown by a coup by the 8th tzar, Elizabeth 2."

@karlmuller4764

Well, its actually quite hard to say how much this video is neutral and objective. Peter established most reforms Catherine the Great got the credits for. (He proclaimed religious freedom, He fought corruption within the government, established public litigation and abolished the secret police.) She wasn't backed by the Army nor the people, and the support of the church was very little. The ''Army'' they are talking about was only the Guard (which were counted as dukes, but without any kind of influence or land) led by Catherines Lover Grigori Grigorjewitsch Orlow (Leader of the royal guard) The People actually rather liked Peter III (Because the Reforms seen abov and his plans of abolishing serfdom) It's also possible to see his popularity in the extreme masses of People in the revolts againts her after the murder of Peter III. It seems he started to realize his Duties as Ruler the day he got crowned Tsar; "... the Grand Duke had been known to be inconsistent and bizarre, but the Emperor was fair, patient, tolerant and enlightened. All senior civil servants retained their offices. He forgave his enemies, even though they had behaved most unworthily against him ... " (swedish Historian Magnus Jacob von Crusenstolpe) You can also see other modern Historians(like Alexander S. Mylnikow or Elena Palmer) slowly questioning the Government of Catherine as a trustworthy Source. Summarized: You can possibly assume the portrayal this video is giving, to be the very same Catherine the Great preached. Edit: Of course Peter wasn't a flawless person; He reigned too activly, too enthusiastic(200 new Laws and Reforms in only 186 days), he should have been more patiently and catious. He should at least have tried to fight her back with his own german guard; or assemble the Army..; or go to Moskau(or any big City) and talk with the People... But here was the video right... he did nothing... he didn't allow his own Guard to shoot and simply got arrested.

His complete lack of social abilities (not that every autistic person has a total lack of social graces, but this was at least two hundred years before anyone knew much about the condition, so it’s not like Peter would’ve gotten any kind of support for it), his fixation on the military and perceived rudeness are what made me think about it.

No I meant funding like from some kinda government education funding type a deal. I mean EC gets lots from the donors but it would be great for you guys to get more then what you need so you could hire extra hands. I was thinking more of this getting its way to classes where it could entertain and teach children. Meh i just think you guys do a great job and deserve the best.

If they would get goverment funding their should hire a historian since they do make mistakes (and not just one in the Lies episodes). Not that these are not really entertaining series but not quite the level for education.

Yes. "hire extra hands." I was implying the "historian" or two and any one they may need to make it classroom teaching ready. But thank you for clearing that up. I guess i was being to vague.

Chill out guys. It's entertainment, it's a hook. If it gets people into history, all the dusty old books (and monotonous teachers) are still there once you're motivated to research an era or historical figure. Besides, there's only so much you can pack into a 10 min clip and they're putting way more care into accuracy than many Edu-tainment channels (I'm looking at YOU popular science). Keep it up EC!

I am glad so many people are getting interested in history due to this series. But, let us remember, this style of telling history (more like a story) has distinct flaws. Specifically, to tell the story in a compelling way, some things get emphasized and some things get downplayed. Too much nuance is lost when this style of history becomes your primary source. For example, the show portrays Peter as just signing a letter claiming his unfitness to rule Russia, when he signed it at the point of a bayonet. Let shows like this get you interested in a historical event. History is interconnected. The American Revolution happened in large part because Peter pulled back from Berlin. The reason that was important was it caused the British to win the war. Due to that victory, they left the colonies alone, and allowed them to form their own governments. Also, the man who is credited with building the Continental Army was a former Prussian officer during the 7 Years’ War. If the war had continued, he might have died. The French loss in the 7 Years’ War is part of the reason they supported the Americans. Etc. You cannot tell all of that in a story format. One of my college projects (History Major, focusing on the History of Prussia), was building a timeline of the start of WW1. It could not be done in a left to right linear fashion. Instead, we started from a central event (the assassination). The timeline grew outwardly, forming a spider’s web of events. Solid circles formed time. Dotted colored lines connected the events, as each events’ influence spread, and connected with other events. Some events occurred only a few minutes apart, despite occurring in different countries, and immediately influenced another country's actions.

I wanted to thank you so much for inspiring me to look into Catherine the Great.After watching parts 1-3 three times, I couldn't wait for the next installment and read her wiki page and watched two documentaries. I really appreciate the perspective you guys give on extra credits. The time you took to focus on her early childhood really helped me get a well-rounded view of her, especially when watching the other documentaries. One painted her as a ruthless social climber, while another focused on her... Lascivious reputation. Seeing these back to back really made me appreciate perspective and just how much of a person's life is left on the cutting room floor. Either way, can't wait for the rest of Catherine the Great. Thank you for introducing me to her.

Well, yeah, their pronunciation is more or less correct. Some names are read a bit weird (like Bestuzhev, "zh" here is read more closely to "g" in genre then how it's read here) though. Russians sometimes also have some problem with distinguishing senate and sinod, but it also helps to rememner that both were founded by Peter the Great, so...there's a bright side :D

I'm with +Excelsius on this one, this sounds like straight up movie material. So much of history plays out in the most interesting ways. Apparently Catherine wasn't the only one who was thinking about taking power, either. Granted, she was the one with the most influence who won out in the end, but there was Ivan VI who had technically been emperor for a little over a year as an infant (deposed by Empress Elizabeth) and Princess Tarakanova, who claimed to be Elizabeth's daughter. Can't have a usurpation without a little bit of chaos!
