Catholics and Protestants: A Case for Friendship (w/ Kim Zember)

Kim Zember and Jackie Angel talk about the beauty of friendships between Catholics and Protestants.
It may seem like the differences between Catholics and Protestants are inescapable, but the reality is that we actually have a lot in common with our Protestant brothers and sisters. The main similarity between us is our love of Jesus. Anyone who is a baptized Christian is going to carry a love of the Lord in their hearts and live in the power of the Holy Spirit.
We can learn a lot from our Protestant brothers and sisters, and it’s important to look at the relationships the Lord has blessed us with and ask why they were placed in our lives. We can always learn from those around us and use this knowledge to deepen our relationship with Christ.
Friendships with people whose beliefs differ from ours allow for opportunity to share the love of Christ with those around us. This is where our differences come in handy. You can share about daily Mass, adoration, or the other ways we cultivate the life of Christ in our daily lives. All of these things we do to strive towards Heaven will be seen by those around us, and especially by those who don’t have these elements in their lives.
It’s not just an intent to try and make them Catholic. It’s a recognition of the beauty that surrounds our faith and the gifts God has given us through faith, and wanting to share those gifts with those we love. Becoming friends with Protestants shouldn’t be about reaching a quota of conversions, but rather building mutual relationships in which we learn from them and they learn from us how to become closer to Christ. That is the beauty that accompanies friendships with people of other faiths.

@Daniel Pan Pope Pius IX and the Church teach that those who, through no fault of their own, don't see the truth of Catholicism, may still be saved. So your idea that all Protestants are necessarily damned is false and against Church teaching.
@vituzui9070
@vituzui9070 3 года назад
@Daniel Pan Most of them are material heretics, nor formal heretics. Here is what Pius IX says in Quanto Conficiamur Moerore: "There are, of course, those who are struggling with invincible ignorance about our most holy religion. Sincerely observing the natural law and its precepts inscribed by God on all hearts and ready to obey God, they live honest lives and are able to attain eternal life by the efficacious virtue of divine light and grace. Because God knows, searches and clearly understands the minds, hearts, thoughts, and nature of all, his supreme kindness and clemency do not permit anyone at all who is not guilty of deliberate sin to suffer eternal punishments." And in Singulari Quidem: "Outside of the Church, nobody can hope for life or salvation unless he is excused through ignorance beyond his control."
@vituzui9070
@vituzui9070 3 года назад
@Daniel Pan By definition, formal heretics are not invincibly ignorant. So of course that ignorance doesn't save formal heretics. However, material heretics can be invincibly ignorant, and therefore can be saved. In order to interpret what Puis IΧ says, you cannot pick the quotes you like and ignore the others I showed you. You must take all in account and listen to the Church. So again, in Singulari Quidem, Puis IX wrote : "Outside of the Church, nobody can hope for life or salvation *_unless_* he is excused through ignorance beyond his control." The interpretation of all those quotes has been given to us by the Church: Faith doesn't necessarily implies explicit faith in the Catholic doctrine (otherwise baptized babies would not have faith). Faith can be implicit. Someone who is invincibly ignorant about the truth of Catholicism, but would be ready to embrace it if he saw the truth of it, has implicit faith. The word "Church" can mean all those who explicitely believe in Catholicism, but can also mean all those who are in state of grace. You can be in state of grace while not explicitely believing in Catholicism, if you are invincibly ignorant about the Catholic truth. Being Catholic is necessary for salvation by what theologians call a _relative necessity of means_. So yes, being Catholic is a duty, but as with all objective duties, you are not guilty of not fullfiling it if your are invincibly ignorant about it. For example, it is your duty to go to mass each Sunday. But if you sincerely think for some reason, that it is Saturday, and you miss mass because of that, you aren't guilty of mortal sin, because you didn't purposefully miss Sunday mass (you thought it was Saturday). In short, the idea that all non-Catholics are damned is against Church teaching. The priest Leonard Feeney was excommunicated by Pius XII precisely because he thought like you. And the irony is that you are most certainly not invincibly ignorant about all that and you knowingly reject Church teaching. Which means you will probably be damned if you don't change your opinion.

I’m sorry friend there’s NO unity to be made. Jesus Christ founded but ONE Church. Protestantism is 40,000 man made CULTS, which are pagan. Only Catholic’s are the true and original Christian’s. There’s NO division because only Catholic’s are Christian. Watch the video entitled Don’t call protestant’s Christian. Also the warning or illumination of conscience by Christine Watkins. God bless all protestant’s. Praise Jesus and Mary always!!!

Great advice! Fulton Sheen has one of my favorite quotes, which is good to keep in mind when talking to Protestants: *“There are not one hundred people in the United States who hate The Catholic Church, but there are millions who hate what they wrongly perceive the Catholic Church to be.”* If Protestants knew what the Catholic Christian Church was, then they would want to be a part of it too, and they are welcome any time!

As a convert, the hardest thing wasn't the True Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, it was Mary and praying to her. Once I understood that prayer is just another form of communication, that it's the content and the attitude that is worshipful or not, things got easier. Also, within a week of praying the Rosary, I saw SO much grace flow into my life, defeating persistent sin that I'd struggled against for years. Looking back it was my honoring her as my spiritual mother that made all the difference. I don't worship Mary at all, but honor her as I'd honor my birth mother, and I've seen such growth in my faith as a result. God honors those that honor His mother. It's as simple as that.

I can't agree with you more. I was raised in a Catholic country, however, my faith has been marginal at best. Calling me a lukewarm believer was a gross overstatement. Around 5 years ago, by coincidence ( God incidence) I came across a Protestant sermon which explained about The Lamb of God. My faith started there, with the prayer of salvation. What I learned subsequently, I'm applying to Catholicism.

However when I went deep in scripture and deep in history by God's grace through the discovery of programs like the EWTN Journey home, catholic apologetics like Catholic answers, former protestants who joined the church etc. I started showing them typology and how Mary is the new Eve, new Ark of the covenant, etc. and unfortunately this didn't go down very well or I probably didn't do it the right way but I pray and hope one day God will bring them home if it is in line with His will

As a new Catholic, Protestants aren’t against us in the belief of God. They’re not the enemy. I think we should all come together and pray together. Pray for the conversion of those who don’t know God. I just get frustrated because more of the Protestants I have met want to argue with me. Ask me why I choose Catholic because I am newly converted. I don’t have any hate towards them, just wish I could have a good bond with them and worship with them 🙃 They KNOW their Bible and I definitely can applaud that.

My heart will always Faith walk in Catholic understandings and practice exercises (it's good for my knees lol) which is itself the Word "Catholic" meaning "Universal". In my belief, as a Catholic, I have a duty to understand other culture's "Universally" as a witness and scholar of humanity. I have an open and teachable heart. My relationship with Jesus Christ tells me this; along with a Faithful human consciousness. The "Bridge Builder" (definition of the word for the title Pope btw; who is a vessel of God like all of us!) in all the different Christian brothers and sisters has a purpose; for me, it brings me closer to knowing Jesus Christ and our call's to be saint's and serve the Lord forever after a Happy, Good Death. in my Catholicism.I try and stay open-minded. I fail sometimes, but I keep trying. I do learn from I do learn something new in Jesus Christ and myself with all of my "Non-Catholic" Christian brothers and sisters. However my Tio Padre Pio he's family and we hang out and Pray together to Jesus Christ every Tuesday. Uncle St. Anthony on Wednesday and one of the Saint's that has followed me since birth. The fact that you even have to do this shows how inherently divisive and judgemental religion really is, since all the differences you're trying to overcome are of your own making. Stop buying into the "us and them" mentality built upon completely invisible traits and unsupportable claims, and you would find it much easier to be friends with far more people than just Protestants.

You need to hang out with Protestants who consider Word and Sacrament central to their church life. There are millions of Protestants who do. You need to read historic Protestant theological formularies and catechisms. The pastoral teaching office of the church is extremely important in classical Protestantism? There is much more to classical Protestantism than what you seem to understand. Protestantism isn’t about praise and worship music and memorizing scripture. The ancient creeds, and the historical theological formularies and catechisms as well as the 2,000 year history of the church are central in classical Protestantism.

Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.” He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” Jesus never once give an example how to pray to Mary for your needs. The Holy Spirit passes the teachings by oral and written word as St. Paul taught. Additionally, the Bible always needs an interpreter, it is erroneous to think we alone can read it without help. The Holy Spirit works through the Catholic Church in this way as we have 2000 years of teaching on the Bible, not to mention compiled it in the 4th century and declared it the Word of God by the Pope. The Bible is a Catholic document but it is not the only one that governs our faith. THAT BEING SAID, nothing from the Church can contradict it which makes sense as the Church cannot contradict herself because the Holy Spirit working through the Church cannot contradict Himself as He is Logos. This is why our 20 councils explain and show why the actions they have done do not go against the Bible and also what the Popes have said to show the consistency with the Oral Word and Written Word.

@Ashley Slack I didn't say the 3 faiths worship the same God. I said they worship the same God the Father. From the start of Salvation History, its God the Father who actively engage the Jews. The entire OT is God and the Jews. When Jesus came, the Jews refused to acknowledge Him as the Son of God. When Christ ascended to Heaven, He sent the HS to the Christians. Not to the Jews. So even though the Jews don't acknowledge Jesus and the HS, is the God that they know different from the God Jesus calls as Father? The Abraham whom we Christians call the Father of our faith knew God as God the Father ? Did Abraham know Jesus ? Or the HS ? No, because Jesus and the HS came into Salvation histort during the NT era. But dont Abraham and we worship the same God ? The Jews in the OT worship God who brought them out of Egypt and though they reject Jesus, they still believe in the same God that took them out of Egypt..the same God that Jesus calls Father. The Muslims claim their lineage to Abraham. They worship the same God as Abraham. And which God did Abraham worship? The same God as us ! Except that their knowledge of God is insufficient because they short of Jesus and the HS. Moses, Isaiah, all the prophets worship God..with hindsight we know its God the Father cos Jesus isn't born yet. The HS has not been sent by Jesus until His Ascension into Heaven. The 12 tribes of Israel worship God...and its God the Father just as their descendents who foolishly reject Jesus and by rejectinf they dont know Him and the HS. But right up till today the Jews worship the God of their ancestors ie God the Father who made the promise to Abraham and the same God the Father who brought them out of Egypt. The chosen race has been superceded to the Catholic Church.

@Ashley Slack Let's see if I understand this. Abraham believed in God. The Jews claim the god that Abraham believed in is God. The Christians claim the god that Abraham believed in is God. The Muslims claim the god that Abraham believed in is God. How is that not believing in the same god? "But their interpretation of God is different than my interpretation of God! My interpretation says that God is actually three people but only one person and they don't believe that!" So, how different does a persons interpretation of a god have to be to be considered a different god? I believe exactly the same thing you do except that when God rested on the seventh day, he literally laid down and slept where as you (and I'm just making this up here, I obviously don't know what you believe) believe that God simply stopped creating and "resting" means he was done. Is that different enough to say we believe in a different god? How much difference is required? I truly believe that there are no two people that have the same belief in a god and therefor no one believes in "the same god".

There are so many gospels and written work by our early Christian forefathers, and it was the Catholic Church who chose (definitely with the guidance/inspiration of the Holy Spirit) which books are essential to the formation of the Christian faith. Which, as Christians, we follow as instructed by Jesus in the Bible we know and love today. Protestants removed the Apocryphal books of the Bible later on, however, Catholics still have all 73 books of the original Bible; books were not added. Another fun Catholic fact: Jesus is my savior and Lord. Whether you dislike or hate the Catholic Church, as a Protestant or non-denominational Christian, your history came from the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church founded by Jesus Christ.
