9/22/21 ride on the Bosque Trail in Albuquerque with our new Catrike 559. This was only the second ride in the Bosque
and had my first flat.
This was bought for my wife but added a Catrike chain tensioner by TerraCycle which allows us to change the length of the boom without adding or removing chain links so my son and I can enjoy the trike as well.

Good video. If you don't mind is like to offer a couple other suggestions in addition to someone else's suggestion of Schwalbe marathon tires , and that is you could put a couple of ounces of tire sealant in the tubes, and the pumping up the tire hard enough you could use a small co2 unit. Their fast. Thanks for tsking me along, trikes are awesome.

i have since put rhinodillo tire liners but still got a flat after 3 rides so i put in some stan's sealant in my tubes and so far nothing after. i also had bought a portable pump that can go up to 90 psi and has a foot peg which i used for the other flats after i made this video. the pump i used here is my mtb pump which is great for high volume low pressure. putting the tire back on is hard on the smaller front tires. i have the schwalbe tire levers, pedros and a pliers like tire seating tool now in my rack bag with a smallspray bottle of water with dish soap(makes reseating the tire so much easier). i carry co2 cartridges and spare 20 and 26 inch tubes as well. whew! i will replace these with schwalbe marathon plus tires once they need to get replaced. i couldn't stomach junking new tires. riding the trike is fun but i still ride my regular bike more. i wish i had the nerve to ride it on regular roads.

Thanks for sharing. Sorry you had a flat. Goathead? Is that trail safe? Saw it while on I-40. Our RV was broken into in Albq., so I'm not excited about that area. Hope you have safe rides, always. The trail looks really nice, at least physically. Safety would be a concern to me.

i don't know if the flat was from a goathead but could have been. i had 3 more flats with the trike over 3 rides on the same trail due to goatheads so i now have tire liners on order. i also bought a pro tool pump that can pump to higher pressures easily. i had to use it the first ride with it 2 days ago. flatted again the right front wheel and the rear made it back to the parking lot before losing air at home. the trail is very popular and is safe. there has been a significant increase in trikes( i am new to trikes.it is actually bought for my wife but i made sure to get a model i would enjoy and equip it with the terracycle chain tensioner so we don't have to adjust the chain length.) sorry about the break in with your rv but rvs and trailers get broken into or stolen a lot in ABQ. the thieves target the motels where people are just passing through. the news report recommended backing into the space with your trailer as one family woke up with their trailer gone from the motel parking lot.

@@Random-ld6wg Our RV was a self-contained class C motorcoach in an Appleby's parking lot. It's just so sad that people appear to be so deprived in that area that so many of them resort to crime. It's everywhere, I guess, but it's sad. Here's an idea for your flat tire problem. Watch the RU-vid video made by the guy who calls himself the Trike Hobo, about flat tires. He uses Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, some kind of special rubber tire liner, and a special thick kind of tube made by Kendra, and he claims he ran into hundreds of goat heads one time while on a long tour and has never had a flat with that equipment. It would be worthwhile for you to check it out.

@@gmaneis yes i saw his video but the trike is new with less than 100 miles so i can't bring myself to buy marathon plus tires at $55 each at this time. i will try the tire liners for now. i can still use them later as well even with changing tires. i bought some rhino dillos based or reviews. crime in the ABQ metro area is indeed high.

@@Random-ld6wg The fact that you can't afford those tires right now is actually a good thing in my opinion. It proves you spent to the limit of your budget for the trike itself, and that's always wise. :-) I can't afford new tires, either!
@Random-ld6wg
@Random-ld6wg 2 года назад
@@gmaneis i can afford them. i am just cheap, ahem, frugal. Ha Ha Honestly, i just can't stomach wasting 3 new tires... now if they had a sidewall laceration or something i would gladly and less guiltily replace them right away with Marathon plus tires.

i put rhinodillo tire liners after a few more flats( fortunately the rear tire was a slow leak that i was able to fix at home). i felt invincible for 2 more rides and then got another flat in the same right tire. ( more debris at the edge of the trail). i put Stan's sealant in the three tires. so far so good. i will get marathon plus tires for the next set.

I ride my 559 exclusively on Marathon Plus and had no flat issues. Many thousands of miles! I just put narrow Schwalbe Marathon Plus on my Catrike 700 as the narrow Duranos were very prone to flats at high speed and slight impact with road imperfections.

Wow! How fast are you going on flat?
@Random-ld6wg
@Random-ld6wg 9 месяцев назад
on the flats here maybe 15 up to 18 at the most. before the flat was downhill so that doesn't count. after the flat only 12 mph back to the car. this video is old but i used to try pushing myself on the trike then realized i will never be as fast as on my regular bike. i used to use the big chain ring often now i just stay in the middle so i am content tooling along 12-16 mph.

Saw your video, do you still have the 559? Do you like it? I'm looking at the catrike expedition and 559 models. I've ridden an expedition a few times that my friend owns. I do a lot of riding on a regular bike but a history of recurring saddle sores/rashes riding in our extremely humid area is getting annoying. (I've seen six doctors and different seats and different bike fits...so yeah it's a pain) My buddy that has the expedition wants me to get a trike, he has four other regular bikes too!
@Random-ld6wg
@Random-ld6wg Год назад
yes we still have it. it is technically my wife's but with the terra cycle chain tensioner i can and use it more than her. it's our only trike so we have nothing to compare to but i like it. one feature which i haven't really used except during winter storage was the folding feature which i thought was a must have. i have only folded it once apart from just seeing how the process goes. you will be slower than on a regular bike, if you accept that then you don't feel bad taking longer on your regular route. i mainly stay in the middle chain ring while riding. any upright gradient will result in marked slowing. your knees wil get more burned riding a trike compared to a regular bike. i still ride my regular bike more often as there's less fuss transporting it. if you do get a trike get it specd with marathon plus tires for more puncture resistance. overall we are happy with it. regarding your saddle issues, have you tried a b17 brooks saddle? you do have to break it in over a few hundred miles while intermittently applying proofide but afterwards it is quite comfortable as it conforms to your ischial bones. you can't let it get wet though.

@@Random-ld6wg thanks for the info, I really appreciate it! I do have a brooks b17 on my touring bike, a surly disc trucker...but have not been riding it, maybe I should try it some, it's also a great bike. My main bike is a Salsa Journeyman which I really love to ride, the saddle wore out and I replaced it with same model but WTB changed it some. I did just change the saddle to a Selle Antomica which is still breaking in a bit and it seems better. Or maybe just try the brooks on it, so thanks for the reminder ;-)

@@richardcavin981 you probably can just move the b17 to whatever bike you are riding. i have it on my old 2006 or so specialized tarmac.

Now she will watch for the orange 559 and hijack you! I ridden a green 559 around the Tucson loop for the past year. I have thought of carrying my light weight 38 revolver. I have never had any bad encounter, but it seems in the past several months it is starting to get sketchy in pockets here and there. Close the border dang it.
