Have you ever heard of, ‘pattern games’? 🤔
If you haven’t, you’re not alone & they are currently an unintentional kept secret of the animal training & animal behavior technologist communities, who have been using these methods with effectiveness to assist with, ‘normalizing changes in the environment.’ Such changes can be of both aversive & appetitive natures as in the cases of loud, jarring stimuli that removal is sought from or a bowl of food that is sought access to.
Leslie McDevitt’s book, Control Unleashed, first conceptualized & applied this approach specifically with dogs. But the amazing inspiration she offered us does not end with canines, but can continue into interactions & arrangements with a variety of species!
It can be a very effective tool in introducing & integrating new felines to one another, along with applying to unfamiliar environments, like the vet’s office or a new home. The limitation to such approaches is that of one’s own creativity.
In the video Poe & I demonstrate the ‘1-2-3’ approach to overcome the temptations of a bowl filled with five pieces of food in it (the same food as the reinforcers being presented).
Pattern games can be applied seamlessly across species and situations. They are enjoyable to engage in with the animals in our lives & increases relationality & builds our bank account of trust. Check out more about pattern games & how they can set both you & the animals in your life for success!
