Just bull shit no practicle use / the cats paw is a simple hitch securing a lineto a hook that is just a certain twist that causes the line to bite into itself rather than slip as are all hitches . This is a waste of time . Anyone can puta back splice into a line but if you are being paid fifty dollars an hour and choose not to use tape you may find yourself two checked and going down the road . If you do not have a roll of tape and can back splice in seconds no one would ever know . In ironwork and rigging as all specialties we never use knots or dumb shit like this .
Absolutely right Wayne, this kind of splice should never be used as alternative to proper eye splice in rigging. But then again, all knots and splices are not meant just for rigging jobs. This is a kind of splice often found on bull halters.
