The cat my family had when I was growing up woke up the entire family several minutes before a massive earthquake (one that did take lives). She wasn't just reacting; she did her best to protect her family. Since we were all awake because of her, we were absolutely in a safer position than we would have been otherwise!

Not to be pedantic, but they're actually hearing it, not feeling it. XD When earthquakes strike, there is a much faster pressure wave consisting of high-frequency waves that travels ahead of the main shockwave. This early wave is too high for us humans to hear, but cats, dogs and other animals can hear it. It's actually pretty damn loud which is why all the cats seem to "wake up" at the same time.

I watched the clip with the cats in slow-motion, and it's even at very low speed, it's impossible to tell which one of the cats was the first to wake-up. It's insane how synchronised they all were.

when I was in elementary, my teacher told us a story of her family's experience during an earthquake, she said it was in the middle of the night and insects, dogs, cats and many animals started making noises around them, waking them up. Earthquake happened soon after that. So I keep it in my mind that when animals suddenly starts going crazy around me, it's a sign of something like an earthquake

My dog in San Diego was a canine seismograph. She always knew about 15 seconds before shakers in San Diego. I guess they can detect the early subsonic waves and frequencies

if you want the truth. right before tsunamis hit indonesia. all the animals are running to the hills. its probably at least 30 minutes or 1 hour before the tsunami hit. only humans was dont get the news. but the humans who are with the animals like on top of elephant just tag along with these animals wondering whats goin on. every time there's major calamity about to hit there will be news/announcement probably from the sky direction but only animals can hear it

Similar to the 1989 quake in Northern California, you usually hear it before you feel it. I remember being outside an apartment, then all of a sudden the sound of MULTIPLE large freight TRAINS sounded like it was coming up from the ground. About 4-5 seconds later, the 7.1 earthquake hit. This sound usually happens with larger on the Richter scale quakes. So most likely they heard it emerging below them before it physically hit.

It’s a weird phenomena because it’s been said that before some tornados, (in more remote areas with no sirens) the only warning sign to one coming is the sound of a train’s horn. I personally don’t live in an area with earthquakes, so I can’t really comment on the sound of one.

Snakes do something similar. I think it was China who has a pit of snakes with a 24 hour webcam as an early warning system for earthquakes. When the snakes start to feel the vibrations, they freak out and bang their heads against the concrete walls of the enclosure.

Earthquakes above magnitude 4 are a rarity in the UK but we do get them occasionally. I remenber the last one I experieced where the horses in the fields next to my house were whinnying loudly and continually , and enough to make me comment on it , about 15 minutes before the quake hit which shook a few shelves. I am convinced that the horses knew it was coming and they must be able to detect the ultrasound before they arrive.

Many years ago, I was asleep in bed and suddenly the cat comes running in, and hunkers down on my chest. A few seconds later, we got hit with a mild earthquake. Before that, she had never sat on my chest while I was in bed, and has never done it since. Seemed that in that one moment, when she sensed the quake coming, she needed assurance and safety.

Brennan Kretzinger We just don’t have particularly good ears compared to some other animals. On the plus side we have pretty good color vision and it’s hard to beat having opposable thumbs, so we’ve got that going for us. There’s a lot of things animals can do better then us, but it doesn’t really matter in the end because we have other tools at our disposal that’s allowed us to make up for it (such as our huge brains).

@0:04 I'm a geologist. What the cats felt was something called P-waves. This type of earth movement can't be felt by humans, but some animals can detect them. Very interesting to witness this happen.

@@gs6205 it is just my experience haha my country is full of volcanos, we are used to earthquakes. first it sounds like is passing near a big truck, like in the street that is 100m away, then is like the other houses are moving and you can hear that, then starts the movement where you at. so I am not sure what makes the first sound, the ground it self or the buildings.

Having been in a pretty large earthquake I noticed that they roll in. Car alarms were going off down the street and getting closer and closer. I’m sure the cats could hear it coming.
