These days with so much information flying around on social media, so often the importance of the local fly shop is overlooked. This video is a candid visit to the old Dettes fly shop in Roscoe New York. This is the oldest family owned fly shop in the country and is rich with three generations of history beginning with famed Catskill fly tyers Walt and Winnie Dette, Then Marry Dette and now carried on by grandson Joe Fox. Although the shop has now moved to Livingston Mannor, it was originally run out of their home here in Roscoe New York where the traditions began and now continue with grandson Joe Fox. On this day I wanted to say hello with my daughter, exposing her to some of this amazing story while at the same time seeking the current wisdom combined with that knowledge of almost 100 years. There is no replacement for this and I am so thankful to have been a part. Always stop in your local shop. It is like the old school diner although in this case the bathroom is through the kitchen :)

Such a part of the fabric. Each and every time that I go there in my mind all of these people are with me knowing that we share that love.

Very nice and interesting video and story. So, is this video of Dettes in Roscoe current, and at the same time another Dettes in Livingston Manor?

The Dette's shop used to be run out of their house in Roscoe New York. I am not sure when they set up their house to be a shop but they began tying flies back in the 1920's. If you were to visit Roscoe you would have to drive through town and the various fly shops that exist on the main street and travel down a dead end road to find it. The old name still can be seeing on the side of a house just before exiting the 94 exit heading West on Rt 17. It was a great feel to visit there knowing the history. The shop has now found a place in Livingston Manor Exit 96 off of Rt. 17 as Joe Fox continues the rich traditions started almost 100 years ago. This video is before the shop moved some years back.

It was around my neck. I don’t like the in the face moments. Just passing through and paying homage while passing on the history to my daughter those that will be passed the torch.

Not sure of the exact year but my daughter is now about to graduate from college and she was just a youngster back then. A nice slice of history and a great example of what a person can learn in just a few minutes when walking into the local fly shop. The is much to be said for what we all can find on social media but nothing replaces the wisdom that comes from taking a moment to walk into a shop such as this.It is like walking into the library and finding the perfect book. This shop was a special place and the New Dettes is a place to recommend. The Dettes are are part of this countries fly fishing foundation.
