Catwoman once vanished from DC comics and the Batman universe for a number of years during the time period known as the silver age. The reason? Self regulation made the character unappealing from a behind the scenes perspective. All that changed when Catwoman made her debut on the Batman tv series from the 1960s. Julie Newmar garnered much fan attention as the feline femme fatale and the comics were quick to take note. Catwoman was gradually phased back in, but there were some changes. In a bid to appeal to television audiences her costume was changed to something more in-line with the TV series. There was one big difference however, it was green! I feel like, in the gallery of supervillains, especially supervillainesses, Catwoman is the one who had the most truly iconic garbs From her purple slitted dress-skirt, to this green number, to the red goggled black catsuit of the modern day. Having read a fair share of Catwoman, she knows how to pull off stone cold looks. Much like our ever stunning host. Let us never forget the true strength of Sasha's wig life.

Catwoman is one of those characters that never really had "A" costume, and I love it. Creative self-expression through fashion is part of the feminine experience, you won't even go to a dinner party with the same friends in a dress they've seen you in before. Variety is critical. I can accept that Batman wants to create a visual shorthand, create a consistent, iconic theme to establish some kind of continuity and messaging, but not everyone is that OCD. I love how Selina is, ultimately, a whimsical figure, she steals and takes and does good one day and evil the next because she's not beholden to social rules. It's one of the reasons she's such a great rival to Bruce and his incessant sense of duty. So why would a woman like that even care about a consistent costume? I do love when they show her doing actual cat-burglaries and her outfit is super practical, with special vision lenses and sticky gadgets and spy stuff, but sometimes literally wearing a floor-length dress with slits seems right, too. She's somehow iconic without ever being the same thing twice!

I just love the passion the people who wrote into the old letter columns in comics had. I've never felt that strongly about anything. You almost might say I'm green with envy! Sorry, but the puns once unleashed can't be contained.

The Danish letter page for translated Spider-Man comics was headed by Marvel-Morten, and people kept talking about rejected letters ending in "The Dreaded Wastepaper Basket". Although maybe I'm getting my characters mixed up, and it was really Super-Ove from the letter pages of the translated Superman comics.

PS: Speaking of the TV show, this little exchange below between Adam West's Batman and Julie Newmar's Catwoman sprang to mind while watching this video, as seen in the Season One episode 'Scat! Darn Catwoman': Batman : 'I'll do everything I can to rehabilitate you.' Catwoman : [perks up] 'Marry me.' Batman : 'Everything except that. A wife, no matter how beauteous, or affectionate would severely impair my crimefighting.' Catwoman : 'But I could help you in your work. As a former criminal, I'd be invaluable. I can reform, honestly I can.' Batman : 'What about Robin?' Catwoman : [pulls a disgusted face] 'Robin? Oh, I've got it: we'll kill him.' Batman : 'I see you're not really ready to assume a life in society...!' (On the other hand, I've also always liked this other exchange between the two from Season Two's 'The Cat and the Fiddle', which ends on a decidedly more optimistic note for BatCat shippers: Catwoman (immediately after Batman saves one of her nine lives): 'How can I ever combat you again after all you've done for me?' Batman: 'Let's hope it never comes to that, Catwoman, because, in the end, veracity and rectitude always triumph'. Catwoman: 'Batman, are you spoken for?' Batman: 'Hmm?' I agree with the letter writer, Michael. I never thought the green worked too well, because although cats do come in many different colors, black, white, gray, silver, brown, and even orange, there are no green cats. Even the purple costume worked, because some black cats seem to shimmer with a blueish purple hue under certain light. Still, it's not the worst costume anyone ever saw. I liked the "Cat-Eye" glasses/mask.

The costume overall is fine (since it's basically the Newmar one), but the green does sort of ruin it. I can see why they did it, though -- with Batgirl being so prominent in the story, having two black-clad females running around could've been visually confusing. Maybe they should've followed the tv show and put Barbara in purple. I kind of like the blue and red outfit Selina picked up after this. I think it's the only Catwoman outfit that actually has a tail...

Julie Newmar's costume is still the best look Catwoman ever had. I kinda liked the green costume, but it was very short-lived. I was also a fan of the outfit that followed with the red cat eyed mask, body suit and buccaneer boots. It took a while for me to warm up to the purple dress when she started wearing it again -- because the previous two uniforms were better-suited to showing her acrobatic skills.

I just think it was something baked into comic book villains (probably from silver age lex's suit, kinda like how superman set the basis for superheroes) and that people just went along with. Like how the hulk has a green/purple design (and yes, I know it was a coloring mistake originally but whatever) to represent how he looks like a villain.

Many of the color choices in the early days of Marvel were actually made by Stan Goldberg, a colorist, who, in those days, was considered production and manufacturing staff, rather than a straight up artistic/creative. (He's best known for DECADES of art for Archie comics) He's credited with changing the Hulk from grey to green, and Iron man from grey to Gold. I got the opportunity to speak with him, and he kind of said what Sasha said, the heroes were designed with primary colors, so he used secondary colors on the villains and background figures. That said, it's unlikely that Jack didn't have his own opinions about how his drawings should be colored, so he probably had quite a bit of influence. Still, pick any two colors and you can probably find a Kirby character that fits the color scheme. Orange and blue Ben Grimm, purple and pink Machine Man, red and blue Ikarus, black and red Forager, green on green Maximus the Mad, silver and red Captain Victory, he tasted the rainbow!

In the comic book, the first panel with Catwoman arriving in her kitty car (shown in silhouette), also depicts a long cape flowing out behind her. Was this an attempt to toy with audience expectations, since her old costume typically included a cape? She is immediately depicted on the same page in the brand new outfit, so I doubt it was just a penciling error. But there is no sign of a cape anywhere after that. Also, my theory about choosing the color green is simply that the tv series Batgirl wore a glittering purple bodysuit, so purple in the comic books for Catwoman would seem less unique. (I love your photoshop re-edit, showing a dark purple costume with blue accents!). Batgirl's color scheme in the comics was black & blue, of course; however, the dramatic lighting on the cover of issue no. 197 gives it purple highlights, which I found interesting. Finally, if the artist had used the "scales" more sparingly, or even dots or some other type of cross-hatching, Catwoman's costume could still seem sparkly without also looking lizard like. Personally, I felt like she resembled a fish, even more than a lizard, but I get that they were trying to depict an intricate material like lurex. All in all, I did like the new tv inspired costume, & would love to have seen it turn up at least one more time.

The whole "Secondary color = villain" thing, brings up questions about both Green Arrow & Lantern*. Not to mention Martian Manhunter. But most especially, Aquaman who doubled down with green, and orange! TBH it throws the whole Lantern color spectrum into a tangent of you truly think about it.

If the comics were being influenced by the TV show at the time, then it may be that the Green Hornet TV show ( which crossed over with Batman 66) had some influence. Linda Scott ( who played Vama on the Green Hornet episode " Invasion from Outer Space"--wearing a catsuit) also played the Riddler's moll named Moth ( wearing a Catsuit similar to Catwoman's) in the episode "Ring of Wax"/"Give em the Ax". And of course, there's that color.

The green costume absolutely did look like scales. In fact, it's quite similar to Mera's costume. Very pretty, but totally off-theme for Catwoman. Modern Catwoman with the black suit and orange goggles is the best version of the costume.

Both version of the live action show and cartoons in the late 60's and the 70's introduced some real bizarre color themes, the green and white (with a white cat eye mask) and that one orange/yellow costume, a color she's never seen again in. Speaking of Green Cats, we've never seen Purple Cats either lol (Keep tellin Bruce Timm that, I love him, but he needs to put into check about Bruce x Barbara ship lol)

The green is weird, (it does look better in purple) but the problem I have is that rather than trying to draw the lurex effect, it looks like Aquaman type scales, which I'm surprised didn't lead to people calling it the catfish look. Probably an inability to get that to look right when printed back then. Unrelated, the salt dispensing was laser guided and exquisite. Semi-related - The outfit for this video is very Catwoman. Love it. Honestly that the that rooftop incident is kind of implied in Batman Beyond is more "why" than the Killing Joke adaptation.

I love green and purple together. Tend so see purple as the 'royal' color or the crown chakra; and surprisingly many villians with mind powers or dominance end up with purple on them. Green on a villian to me signifies the heart chakra - but it is directly entirely towards themselves - so say poison ivy being green (aside from the whole logical eco thing) she has xtreme charasma power. also the old enchantress of the marvel norse pantheon, also enchantress.so what about orange? red and black are almost cliche as the bad guy colors as well, to an amazing degree accross many genres and medias.

I'm with the letter on this one, green just isn't a cat color. It almost feels like a coloring error that they ran with. It reminds me of Wind Dragon from JLU who was supposed to be based on Samurai from the superfriends, but they made his costume red instead of green, like it had been colored by someone with red/green color blindness and everyone was too afraid to correct them.

PPS: As a sort of sequel to this vid, Sasha, is there any chance that you could pretty please cover Brave and the Bold issue 78 from July 1968 at some point soonish...? It has Batgirl engaged in a series of over-the-top romantic duels over the Caped Crusader's heart (or so it seems...!) with none other than his future DCAU love interest, Wonder Woman; and I'm sure you could find plenty of delicious Silver Age Bat-snark fodder therein, such as this quote from ol' Batsy himself: '...Enough, you two! I've had enough! You've ruined everything with your kooky romanticism...!'

Selina purposely revamped her outfit, over and over, with a goal in mind. After age caught up to her-- you can only be an agile, acrobatic, cat burglar for so long-- she was going to open a business of Halloween outfits, Kyle's Kostumes, featuring all the multiple styles she wore over the years. She could even branch off into other villain's outfits and eventually hero wear. Why? Because she can't have stashed away enough stolen jewelry to retire on. Fences only give you a fraction of an items true worth. This would support her in a legal fashion; making illegal-looking fashions.😎

It's not just the The Killing Joke adaptation, it's Bruce Timm in general, and I don't get why. It's got sooo many layers of gross, from the power-dynamics, to the age-gap, to the fact that she's also often paired with his adopted son making it weirdly incestuous.

Heroes tend to wear primary colors, while villains get secondary colors. I think my favorite Catwoman costume would be would be the BTAS one. It's grey and black, so it balances both a cat burglar in an urban setting and someone with a cat theme

Sasha, I was a young boy when the old series aired, but even so, those cat suits (including Batgirl's) really did it for me. Excellent casting made its contribution, too. Although Yvonne Craig, Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and (my favorite!) Eartha Kitt were all in their 40s during their time in Gotham City, they each had backgrounds in dance. I believe that this helps explain why they were all so able to ROCK those outfits! I also remember seeing various features of the TV show crop up in the comics -- to somewhat lesser effect than they'd hoped ... or so I believe.

40s! Yvonne Craig was born in 1937 making her about 30 on Batman. Newmar was more in 1933 -- making her mid 30s. Meriwether (1935) in her early 30s (and the only one above still with us!). As I suspected, Kitt was the oldest of the group -- born in 1927 -- and actually was 40 or so when Batman was in production.

A random adaptation scene that pops in my mind is the all-star superman movie when lex says "Your right." Its such a small, but amazing change that is the perfect send off for lex's character.

The green costume has got to be one of my least favorite. That, combined with the scaley motif really gives the impression that she's supposed a fish or reptile themed villain.

Filmation’s 66’ Batman cartoon also had Catwoman in Green with White boots, mask, gloves and black belt. Terrible screechy voice they gave her but understandable to be a departure from the live action series.

I choose purple because Green really makes her look like Madame Hydra with the scales and all. Why not black or purple? Probably because of Emma Peel, a fantastic figure of female fighting force that led the way through out the 60s and 70s of how to... how should I put it... put the bomp into the bomp she bomp she bomp. 2:30 And boy, did it get recursive. Amazing how THAT Avengers movie based Emma Pell off of Black Widow's look which was based off of Emma Peel. Black Widow's first design was based on Catwoman's... second look? No, first look! And as always, form defines function so if they were there just there to look sultry then they went femme fetale but if they had to fight, they went with Emma Peel.

Emma Peel was played by Diana Rigg (Game of Thrones queen) and one of her outfits on the Avengers show inspired the Black Queen look for a Jean Grey in the Dark Phoenix saga.

green catsuit would only appear twice in comics. in the 60s Filmation Batman series (which aired after the West show) Catwoman sported a green costume, so some bleed over.
