The National Air and Space Museum's Caudron G.4 is one of only two in existence in the world. It is one of the oldest bomber aircraft and one of the oldest objects in the Smithsonian aeronautical collection. Curator Peter Jakab describes the history of this unique aircraft and restoration specialist Karl Heinzel gives insight into the condition & preservation techniques, as well as his own artistry, that went into restoring & preserving this aircraft.

I think there is actually one more of this plane but it’s taken apart.

I'm a huge fan of pre-and-early First World War aircraft. I was last at the Smithsonian in 1960 and of course at age 10 I had no idea what a Caudron G.4 was. Kudos on owning the plane and on the restoration. I hope to get there to see it in this lifetime.

Yes, the gunner/radio operator/ whatever else is in front. And not far from the props.
