To catch up with faster German monoplanes, the RAF devised a cost-effective plan to upgrade their trusty Hawker Fury fleet. Instead of building new planes, they’d simply modify existing ones.

Sqn. Ldr. J. W. Gillan, No. 111 Squadron, on February 10, 1938, personally demonstrated the prowess of the Hurricane by flying from Edinburgh to Northolt at an average speed of 408 mph.

Not up to standards I expect from the Smithsonian. A "C- "at best. First: the fuselage on the Hurri is NOT wood it is steel tube. The formers around the steel fuselage are wood, and they are for aerodynamic air flow/cosmetic reasons. These pieces of wood carry NO load. The steel tubes carry the strength/load. Second: the Merlin. In 1918 Rolls Royce developed the Falcon V12 engine (with help from the Curtiss V12..a whole 'nother story.) and it became the Kestrel and finally ended up as the Merlin. (one can not sum up this story in one sentence, but close enough for general public). Third: biplanes do not magically develop drag at 200mph. Some Russian WWII fighters might disagree with you on that point. Visibility, ease/cost of construction, potential of higher speeds, plus realizing the silliness of antiquated reasoning (Old brains generals looking at a monoplane fighter and saying, "it doesn't look strong enough".) helped develop the monoplane fighter. You need some serious quality control. I am glad that you attempted to put this information out, but raise your standards.

The Hart/Hind/Fury already used the Kestrel I think, the Merlin predecessor, though the Merlin would go on to be developed well beyond the Kestrel. They didn't mention that fortunately this Hawker series of biplanes was already relatively fast with a sleek faired engine which helped make this evolution successful. Wouldn't have worked from just any biplane. Didn't this biplane series start life as a light bomber, then when their fighters couldn't catch it, the RAF ordered a fighter version? But by the time the Hurricane was needed that previous biplane series was a lot less competitive.

i find it ridiculous that they make it sound like monoplanes were a german idea. monoplanes had existed since the dawn of flight, it's just that for most applications their strengths were outweighed by their weaknesses in the early days. however, as materials and construction advanced, as more powerful engines drove aircraft with more power, there simply came a point when monoplanes became more practical.
