As a Storm Spotter i get excited at the prospect of a storm coming in off the Lake, so with the forecast showing storms today I got on the Sea Doo and rode out far on lake Erie to see what i can spot.
Within minutes the calm waters were changed into rough waters.

No offense, but I think your main belt is slipping a little. A jet ski, in a storm, on Lake Erie? Well, it's your life.
@rickss69
@rickss69 2 месяца назад
Actually, a jet ski is far safer than most boats. They will not sink unless you allow one of the seats or hatches to open. In the event of a roll over you can easily right it...not possible with any boat.

Lake Erie is the shallowest of the 5 great lakes and gets huge waves because of that during storms. Getting caught on a boat during thunderstorm on lake Erie can be terrifying. Happened to me once around midnight while fishing for Walleye near Buffalo NY. the lake was flat and within no time we had 3 to 5 foot waves. Pretty scary when your on a 12 foot fishing boat and we had to travel back to the dock 2 miles away in the dark. On top of that I called the local TV News weather report on the phone and there was a SPECIAL MARINE WARNING for the Lake Erie near Buffalo NY. Good Memory now because that we made it back without getting hit by lightning or capsize the boat.

Guess I'm missing the point on why someone would want to purposefully put themselves in danger by going out on a jet ski on Lake Erie (or any lake/sea really) with a thunderstorm approaching? What good could possibly come from it? Lightning is the biggest danger out there, and it can strike far from its parent storm. Even if he lived through a lightning strike, his jet ski would probably be on fire and now the Coast Guard/rescue people have to put their lives in danger to go rescue him. I like adventures, but I don't get this one.

On a grey day a few years ago I was watching the wind all day while at work. Radio said it was gusting 80 to 100 kms. No rain, just wind. Launched in Port Stanley right after work. From the lowest point of the valley between two waves to the peaks of the waves was in the neighbourhood of 20 feet. One of the best rides ever! Scary in a boat... playtime on a ski! Grew up on the water... not for the timmid. Love your videos!

You need to use your trim in a more upward opposition to bring the nose up so you're not nosing into the waves. Tilting your trim upwards will keep the nose up and you'll have a much easier time gliding over the wave instead of stuffing the front of your ski and pushing so much water. You said you've only had this machine for about 8 or 9 weeks. As jetskiing goes, I have about 35 to 40 years of experience and trying to outrun a storm purposely, on Lake Erie is just as "non-smart" as trying to take on the Niagara River rapids. It's just dumb. I don't want to hear about some guy dying on the water and it be you, or anyone. Please treat the water and know the limits of your jetski and your ability to handle one!!!🫡👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Among the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is the most shallow of the others. Shallow lakes have closer wave to wave distance. Rougher conditions, waves are more steeper and more vertical, like hitting a concrete wall.
@NigelHay
@NigelHay Месяц назад
This is very evident when riding near Port colborne, the light house or near to Buffalo where the waves become more like ocean waves due to sudden shallow water and deeper channels on the side.

Can't play games like this with bad weather on the water, especially by yourself with no one around. Things can turn dangerous in an instant on a sunny day on the ocean. I don't even go out if the weather isn't looking good. So many things can go wrong outside of your control new ski or not. You get tossed off no one will hear you scream or be able to find you before you drown. If you THINK bad weather is coming head back storm chaser or whatever I don't care. We're all on our own on the water, the lucky ones have someone nearby when they need help, the unlucky ones are never found.

Oh a weather radio would let you know the speed and track of the storms.

@wjatube
@wjatube Месяц назад
This is an amazing thrill as you cant play with storms like this on land. You check your radar and visually see the opening so you quickly get to 60 knots into the calm and before you know it closes in on you so you have to find a safe passage out. Yes, I've done this before and I can say besides unpredictable lightning strikes the worst is the psychological impact of being out there and it goes dark and you feel that frigid Canadian front bellow down from the North. Suddenly you feel very insignificant.
