Barf. It happened to fall off at a low part of a swing where it happens to have the most resistance to come back up. He'd have to have hands to "set it down".
There is a reason that you often find shed horns so close together. Imagine just how unbalanced you would feel if you had 20 pounds of bone on either side of your head and then one side suddenly fell off. I bet you would do just about anything to knock off the other side too.
I think its similar to a lose babytooth. You can feel its almost ready, maybe another day or two. Then it comes off with a little pressure or shaking it off
@@BelindaB777nope all deer species including elk, moose, and caribou shed their antlers every year. In fact that is the defining trait that makes them "antlers" and not "horns". Antlers are shed annually horns are not.
That is a 1 year antler?!? Holy Moly. I was going to say how does hy run through the forest but it doesn't look like there is one there. Dang. If I saw that, I would probably think it was a tree branch. Awesome.😮
@@LSD123. they make great dog chews and are often used for various forms of art (like semiprecious rock carving 😊 and origami) IDK what Google would tell you about them but those are a few uses I've found them handy for!
@@ThatGuyKazzwas just thinking about that too. Watched one where a bull moose was just standing then seemed to startle and shake his head a bit. The antlers detached so fast it scared him off.
@user-mi5cm1cm2z I don't eat meat but respect subsistence hunters more than getting meat from the USDA: it's rife with terror and discomfort for the animals. Hoping humanity can rise to help Earth soon. 🌎 She needs triage. Peace ✌️
@@TroutDartThat was really fascinating. I had no idea how antlers are shed - never considered it until the start of this clip, but I was waiting for a big hit against the ground so very surprised to see the gentle placing of the dead weight 😳🤔 Poor guy needs a neck massage for sure though!
Yep. Slightly growing in bigger each time too. Truly amazing when you think about, or watch a full compilation of, the process from start to finish each year.
@@Pluto_Is_A_Planet_ After a few years the growth starts to revert and that's why the restaurant I work at might have this guys tenderloins on a plate next year. We got in 12 elk tenderloins for xmas/new years appetizers + 215 person wedding. Elk farms are cool but I prefer wild.
@@Pluto_Is_A_Planet_ Filling my elk tag is harder than my deer tag. I'm grateful for any large wild game. This year I didn't get my own elk, I tracked blood trail for my friend and helped pack it out. He let me take a back leg. Me and my dad both filled our deer tags. I had to track my dad's deer too. Learn how to follow blood and learn how to read the land
@@heruhcanedean Yeah, I heard they had to cut back on elk tags or something this year in some areas as well due to some groups of them dying out due to extreme weather or something. I don’t know if that’s true or not, just something I heard from a couple people I know who still live out West.
If you find an elk shed, you may wanna check your local regulations...some places may ticket you if you get caught with it. I know, its stupid to me too, but they are very protective about anything elk related. I could be totally wrong, but I remember hearing this somewhere recently.
@samp4016 how in the world is that stealing? I question a government that has no problem polluting everything it touches and says don't take natures waste products... do not respect dumb laws ever.
Ive seen so many reactions of different deer species of when their antlers drop, theres calm like this guy, the ones that are running and they drop, and the shake my head and get startled when they drop lol
I feel you, elk. I used to work in a job where i had to carry 5 gallon water jugs by hand. My coworkers asked why i always took 2 at a time instead of one. I told them "spine alignment".
Mine too. Years of remodeling swimming pools and commerical painting has wrecked me. If your heart can take it try cold plunging. It really does give me a few hours of relief and several hours of the rest of my body feeling better than ever.
I had same experience at work, except with 21L buckets. People were always so sweet to offer help with one, but it’s so much harder on the body when you’re out of balance.
@@_kontingencywell if you have something stuck to your head but can't use your hands what would you do? (Shake your head back and forth to throw it off)
@@geostrophc damn sure am. I'd bet all the money I have that I'm smarter than 75% of humanity or more. The past several years have taught me that and more. When your eyes open and you start looking at everything differently, using that pineal gland, you can look around and just tell that you're smarter than a lot of the people around you. Especially when you still see people wearing masks. I mean imagine still doing that to this day. I think part of all that stuff was exactly what it did, separate the idiots from the people that are intelligent. And actually to be totally honest with you I was not the top of my class at all. My mind was too active for school I didn't do great, especially in high school. If there's another thing I've learned in life is how someone does in school only just shows how much of a mindless sheep somebody can be. Congratulations you did what you're told very well little buddy. There's also a difference in book intelligence and wisdom. What did you vote for Joe Biden and got triggered or something? What's real funny is these days not many of you would admit that in front of other people. I've literally seen that for myself a bunch of people that voted Democrat in 2020 but are afraid to own up to it nowadays. Not like the voting really mattered anyway in that election. Which Speaking of which is another great measure of intelligence, whether you believe the 2020 election was legit or not. That says a lot in itself
Bull Elk are noticeably less angry once they've shed their antlers. When they're ripping off their velvet, and during the rut, they're furious animals.
@@timothywang4083 No, but what I mean is that you often see young ones get completely shocked when an antler pops off, like they don't expect it in that moment. This fine lad is just used to it by now.
Umm, sorry to burst your bubble but Elk aren't cows. It's true people refer to cow and elk as 'bull for male, cow for female' but that's been happening forever. Cows are Bovine. Elk are Cervidine. They are VERY different species.
@@dagrazytcom5492 Try googling, "what is a female elk called?" real quick. The original commenter is not saying they are bovine. "Cow" is used as a gender specifying term in certain species. The "cows" we get milk from are actually called that because they are female and not as a species title anyway. "Bull" specifies male, and "cow" specifies female in many species including the bovine species we use for milk and meat as well as Elk.
Judging from cattle farmers I know and the yellow earring its rocking there's hardly a tree around to help knock them off. I wonder how it was able to rub its felt off, must have been on the fences. The elk farmer I know puts caging around the feeding areas to help knock them off.
@darrenmurphy5347bone is NOT made of keratin. Fingernails are, though. Hair and fingernails are keratin. Bone is protein, collagen, calcium, water, and hydroxyapatite. Antlers are not comparable to bone, they’re more comparable to claws.
I live about 100yds from the edge of the forest. One day I was sitting on the front porch, and heard this really loud cracking sound, looked up just in time to see a huge pine tree come crashing down. Same as you no wind, it just cracked in half and fell over.
don't say that i I have to walk by a forty foot dead tree every morning it caught fire three years and now it keeps shedding large limbs like that elk.
I live by the Fox River in Illinois, and while I've never seen a shed antler anywhere near this size, my dogs find little ones and bring em home to chew on
@@decidiousrex I find it so weird that with the thousands of deer around me, and the thousands of hours I've been in the woods, I've only found 2 sheds.
One of the worst movies. I tried rewatching it a few months ago and I can't remember if I even reached the end before turning it off. I had multiple urges to and can't remember if I rode it out.
@tykeandjonsieshow3595 wow...then you clearly have waaay more issues than is going on here...are you triggered because you want antlers yourself....do you identify as an elk...
That’s so cute! It’s almost like when you’re a kid and know a baby tooth is super loose but you’re scared to pull on it you’d rather it come loose on it’s own🥹so stinking cute 🥰
I guess that's why deer tend to gnaw on bones whenever they can find them, hey? Makes more sense to me now that I think about it from that perspective.
😮😊 I was half expecting him hitting it on the ground , but nope. He swung it a few times and , abracadabra,, it falls softly to the ground.. Nice job Mr.Elk..🦌(closest elk emoji I got).😊
@@13donstalos the animal dose not look iterated in the slightest way in fact in look very calm and comfortable and even placed it down gently this is the reason why I asked why someone would think it looks itchy because it doesn't the animal knows it's about to fall off so it gently sways it's head
@@zackiaryruddick701It doesn’t look at all “calm and comfortable” lmao it’s swinging it’s head around trying to shake it off or otherwise rub it against something. The antler falls off “gently” because he only manages to rub it against the ground. Shedding antlers are very itchy and irritating, as are newly growing antlers.
That’s extremely rare to see let alone record a video. It’s clear that when elk are shedding their horns it itches or irritates the animal. I learned something new today. Thank you for that.
Where are the trees? It looks like the tiniest of impacts as the antler hits the ground was enough to finish the job. I would imagine they normal shed antlers more easily because the antlers are bumping into branches, brush, bush etc. Cool video.
Reminds me of a video I saw where a Moose shed it’s antlers, and instead of them just easily falling off, they POPPED OFF! It was so funny yet so, so cool!
As he sheds his last antler, he begins to sob & cry out loud “why was I challenging everyone and everything???!!! And whatever came over me to even begin to think that I need a harem, A HAREM???!!! Who have I become????!!!!!!”
Is losing bay teeth supposed to be pure bliss? Because when i was a kid and had a tooth that felt loose it didnt matter where it was,i would shake it back and forth until i ripped it out of my mouth. It was agony every single time, and SOOO much blood when i would do it. I remember ripping out one of my molars in elementary school during summer school because it felt loose,i asked to go to thebathroom and stood infront of the mirror and spent like 30 min ripping it out......they ended up sending me home because me AND the bathroom sink and floor wede covered in blood
