Congrats! It's been a dream of mine to metal detect the UK for many years. Here in the US we're just not old enough and we're pretty limited in what we find. You guys got so much things going on in your background, Celtic, Roman, and all the other hammered stuff my God! I wish you the best and hope you find some more take care!

(thought it would work as normal due to it being water proof within certain parts of the detector), on dry land and sand worked well. My first one, so still have lots to learn

I always tend to think those coins were hidden under rocks to be collected later, but failed to, then clegg comes along centuries later and shows them to us, unreal!!

Mike Kelly This man hacks and chops his way through the turf to the extent that it simply sets my teeth on edge!!! He left the field looking like a moonscape and then spouts this crap about think he didn’t think the archaeologist wouldn’t want to bother digging the site because of the inconvenience of having to excavate under rocks??? Is he f’ing kidding?? And when he start hitting pottery shards I was furious!!! I wanted to throttle that wretched little troll!!

EpicChannel I love archaeology and the time and care spent in carefully removing an artifact in situ. Metal detecting is a far cry from that profession, so maybe I should just shut up and go away instead of suffering fools!!

@@nickandlaurihyde Stop being so angry as i can actually see your point. I am only about a year into metal detecting and honestly i was looking for some WW2 history in the place i live. I knew enough that i GPS anything i couldn't identify. I realised after a did that i had dug up an immaculate bronze age palstave. I contacted the local museum. The thing is that this has made me research like crazy and learn about what i should be doing if i incounter archaeology. The shear volume of area that people involved in metal detecting cover has brought about finds that may never have been uncovered. The vast majority of people who detect have the best intentions and most never really expect too find anything of major significance. Honestly knowing what i know now i would suggest a national forum and standard involving archaeology and even the manufacturers and those who take up the hobbie. We should not be turning on each other as both have incredible benifits.

I think Andrew Watts made a very good point in his comment. As you were pulling out some of those bits of rock, I thought to myself that they didn't look like random rubble, but something from some sort of structure.

Yup. That "useless bit of rock" he grumbles about could be part of a building. Hope there's coordination between Clegg and archaeologists to learn more about the site. (It's not just about the hoard.)

Well done Cleggy. When you find out the date of the coins you'll then have to have a look in to the history of that area and see what was there at that time. I'm sure if you put a shout out to some trainee archaeologist they'd help dig over that area. Look forward to the next video.

I agree looks very similar to flooding stone i live next to some old settlements have a roman road running through the property and find a lot of material like this. also cleggy you will have to come detect in North Somerset got some fantastic locations happy to let you know of some places 😊

a good heavy small point knife is best to clean out around other artefacts , in some cases , only pencils are the only respectful way ;-)

I think you might have found an old settlement. It might be worth checking Ordnance Survey maps. Have you tried around Nunney Castle? It's near Frome.

Thanks Morley, I'm thinking of getting one of those 6-inch coils for the CTX because some of the hammered coins might be up on edge sliding down between the rocks or do you think the stock 11 inch coil is good enough?

Thank goodness you had the beer or you never would have made it! Lol! A fantastic hunt and you found your gold & your hoard to boot! It will be interesting to see what the FLO says about your finds and if the spot is still loaded with more relics and coins. Any idea when the archaeologist may be in to do a dig on the spot? It would be interesting to film that too! Are you and the property owners going to split the coins or the cash? A good recovery and a good lot of nice coins! Take care & happy hunting!

Try using your pinpointer before you dig the target. This helps lock into it and not hit the target. Set to max level 3 on pinpointer and make cross over area. Push the tip a inch or so into the ground and look for any beeps. If you get one then you are directly over top of the target..

The groat that was found first with the head facing left and the stars on the reverse is a David II of Scotland groat (1367-1371). I think it was in part 1.
