Leah, trick of the trade, moisten the area where you are applying the frog 🐸 tape with a lighty dampened sponge 🧽, then apply the frog 🐸 tape. It activates the blocking and adhesive properties in the tape and does even a better job.
@lovebertierose
@lovebertierose 7 месяцев назад
I have never heard of this before, well because if water were applied tape won't stick. This is mind blowing and will try this tomorrow.
@indisputablefacts8507
@indisputablefacts8507 7 месяцев назад
I learned that last year - but the technique I learned was to wet just the edge of the tape rather than the whole surface. The surfaces I've used it on aren't as rough as this example, but it certainly does improve the performance of the tape by an order of magnitude.

I apply the frog tape then press it into the wall with a wet rag. The water causes the adhesive to swell. Creating crisp lines.

Leah IF you have some leftover of the underlying color, painting the edge of the tape with that, let it dry to the touch, and then paint the contrasting color over. The original color seeps under the edge but is invisible…the contrast color sits on top and you get the same perfect edge. It’s how we paint complex patterns on floors, etc. w no visible bleed. You gotta have the original paint tho’.

Leah, you've given us some good hacks in the past. But this one might take top honors! Been painting on and off professionally (someone is always needing something painted) for 40 years. I've never seen this! With textured walls gaining popularity, it's only a matter of time before l pull this one out of the hat.

Excellent tip. The frog tape activates with water. So instead of pressing it in with a putty knife do that with a wet rag. This causes the adhesive to swell and fill in the rest of the gaps. But it is expensive. So the caulking trick is great.

According Frog Tape the water in the latex paint should be enough to trigger the polymer substance to expand. I can see how wiping the tape down with water could help.
@ecospider5

@seejanedrill It definitely does. It just doesn’t react fast enough to stop the paint getting through larger gaps. Pre wetting it stops that problem.

Best thing I’ve done is once tape is up, use the color under the tape with a brush and lightly paint over the edges. It will seal it and any bleed through is the color under the tape. Perfectly crisp lines and no need to buy caulking. Given you have the color of the current color under the tape. When I’ve painted lines it’s been a full project. So I paint wall. Then tape, paint over edges with wall come, then in between tape with new color.

You are doing it the right way. I’ve been a painting contractor for 25 years and this is how I do it. Problem with the caulk it will leave white under the tape and too much build up.

@@four20freedomfighterthanks. I didn’t know If it was the right, or best method, but best method I’ve found and have been using. It’s so much quicker and cheaper (and works better) than the caulk method. Again, given you have the wall paint color, which most will as stripes are normally painted over another new color that was just painted.

I once had a friend who was a professional painter who showed me this trick. Years later, my girlfriend wanted me to paint her office in a style she’s always wanted since she was a child. It required many lines all over the walls and the ceiling. Only problem: the entire room was textured! Aaagh! I pulled this trick out of my pocket and spent a lot of time on the room. We got many gasps and comments later, even from another professional painter on the results. Crisp, clean lines everywhere. I used the additional method of wiping the bead with a damp cloth as I went along to leave a smoother, lesser amount of caulking behind. Great method for results, and a great cost-saving method as well! Thanks for sharing!

Yup!... I use the same approach. When I can't come up w/a match..on the fly... the store mixes up a sample size. I only use Dollar Tree masking tape. It's low-tack.. & fits anyone's budget! I burnish the edge. IMO...Caulk's pretty risky as it can easily result in flashing.... which can be a beast to correct. It's one thing when it's shadowed against trim... But when it's in the middle of the wall...it's eye-catching. To use Caulk: I'd feather it & probably texture it slightly w/ a damp T-shirt... ( IK, it's TMI for a reply...markh...my bad ...but I ain't retyping it.) ...I could go on...lol PEACE-OUT!
@markh5889

@dollybelfiore7628
@dollybelfiore7628 7 месяцев назад
@@markh5889 Exactly... light reflects/scatters differently... it's like going for a flat enamel or eggshell over a 'not-so-perfect' surface. Avoiding anything with gloss;/eflection that highlights every imperfection. Painting over caulk is like painting over scotch tape... it doesn't absorb... & so, it ''flashes'' ***My go-to is always Zinzzser's latex 1-2-3 (blue label) ...It tints true to color... can be topped with almost anything... & has the finish of old lead paint... ALL, IMO...of course! lol The oil-based,(red label)123 white shellac is extremely versatile as well!)

Hello Leah, As usual, you give hope to the hopeless 😅 One thing that was not clear for me though, was how the caulking was applied/smeared. Was it smeared along the edge of the tape, so that it hits both the tape and the wall? If so, is the logic behind this, that the caulking seeps under the edge of the tape, filling up the cavities, thus not allowing the paint to bleed/seep under the tape? I guess the bit that confuses me is will the caulking end up compromising the adhesive nature of the paint? Thank you for your time and consideration Leah. You, can, do, this! 🙌 👍
@bethhentges
@bethhentges 7 месяцев назад
My question also.
@ecospider5
@ecospider5 7 месяцев назад
Yes there is now caulking under the clean edge of the tape. If you do it thin enough you won’t notice. And caulking is designed to fill small holes in the wall before painting. So it sticks to the wall and the paint just as well as the paint sticks directly to the wall.
@ecospider5

Yeah, I've heard of it... seen it done originally when I was the one "running trim and decorative borders"... For my purposes, it's one of the greats for when I need templates, because cutting those out manually is usually the only way I'm getting them, and then I have to spray adhesive on them just to get them on the wall/ceiling/floor... I GOTTA have those lines crisp and clear... SO the caulking trick is tops on that account. Enough time gets run out just drawing and cutting templates for everything from birds to roses and grape or oak leaves. A little care to let the spray-adhesive "partially dry" before putting them up, and they can be salvaged for two or three re-uses, too, just depending on the size and complexity of a project. Fancy CAN be done quickly and relatively cheaply... It just takes a trick or two... or three... haha ;o)

I heard some people tell to burnish with a dry brush (instead of a putty-knife). Personally I prefer caulk or e.g. yellow paint as a first coat. For wood, a clear varnish does the trick better, as it seals any capillaries (better than caulk would).

If your wall is highly textured and you have any base color left, paint the edges of the tape first. (That way if any bleeds through the tape, it will be the base color and less noticable.) Now the edges of the tape are sealed with the base paint. Then paint over the tape again with the accent color and remove the tape. There will be no notice bleed through. Cost? Base coat, free (as it was left over paint). Calking, it's probably left over too, but I'm afraid of caulk, so I choose paint. Plus, I'm afraid the caulk might cause a higher ridge than the paint. Leah will have to do a comparison for us! 💖🌞🌵😷

The way to do this without ANY caulk is to apply the tape. Then paint a “stripe” of the color under the tape, at the edge of the tape. The paint runs under to fill the voids. Then when you paint the new color up to the edge of the tape, the voids are already filled in with the “under” color. When it’s almost dry, pull the tape and you have a razor sharp line. Note, this only works if you’re painting the whole area and have the “under” color as a fresh coat. Otherwise you’ll have paint under the tape that doesn’t match the previous area. In that case, use Leah’s excellent caulk trick!
