For all the first-timers out there: Do not be discouraged or deterred by those who say to hire a professional. Although I understand why a professional would post that wanting to protect their livelihood. But for those of us who are not in a financial position to hire an experienced, licensed and honest professional (for whom I have great respect), do it yourself. This is not as hard as some of you might think. I'm currently remodeling my bathroom (for the last couple of months). Something I have never done. So everything is a first for me. Nearing completion of the project, decided to skim coat over the orange peel. Made sense considering about a third of the walls were smooth from (nightmare) "fixes" that were required due to shoddy work by the previous owners who used the house as rental property. Just follow the advice seen here, which is what I did (in addition to watching other "how to" videos on the basics of mudding, using a drywall knife, etc.) and you'll do just fine. There is nothing you can "screw up" that can't be fixed with a drywall sanding block and another coat of mud. I have one more coat to go (for which I will use this technique) and the walls are looking beautiful. It is a little messy, but clean up is easy. Cheers!

I AGREE!!! I have never done drywall other than patch work...I skim coated a 1400sq ft HOUSE. ...yes...the entire house. Was it easy...not at first. But now I am really good!!!! I have mad respect for contractors....but just as they learned by "doing it" so can you. Will I ever do an entire HOUSE of skim coating again...doubtful. But I am capable to do it if i needed to. My roofer said I probably saved 8,000 to 10,000 doing it myself.

I've actually been searching for this. I wanted to just skim over the popcorn on the ceiling instead of spending too much time on it. And my mud wasn't working out the right way, because I learned more that it wasn't enough water. Thanks

Thank you Leah and Paul! My hubby and I bought a home with annoyingly crappy walls. We are updating the house together (DIYers) and he put me in charge of learning to mud a few walls that he erected. I took it a step further and used your technique on the walls that really bugged me. Looks so much better! I'd say that at 61, if I can do it, most of you can too.

We just finished skim coating a room using this technique. The old plaster walls didn’t have the finish coat of plaster (just the brown coat, due to coat/labor issues during WW1, apparently), so they were really wavy with all the lath visible. We put super crack stop mesh up first, then rolled on three coats using your technique. We didn’t thin the mud as much because we had quite deep valleys to fill. It ended up taking three coats. It went SO much faster and easier than the previous skim coating that I’ve done, and it looks great. I did minor touch ups around outlets and trim, and now it just needs minor sanding. Thank you to both Leah and Paul!

Paul Peck totally agree , I’m a very experienced DIY’er having built new rooms , bathrooms etc . Filling holes and sanding . But getting a pro in for skimming is more expensive but worth every $ then it’s just a case of painting . Great job 👍🏻

Thank you Paul. And thank you Leah! We had 600 sq' of ceilings to skim. At end of the 2nd day, I was really starting to lag behind my husband. I didn't have the muscle to keep applying steady pressure while applying the first coat. The last 2 hours, I had to let him apply first coat, I could only work in the rooms ready for their 2nd coat. I was rather miffed. I don't usually have to wuss out on such tasks. That 2nd day we drove home, dropped on the couch and said: "There has to be a better way to get the mud on the ceiling." He searched through Leah's channel and came up with Paul's video. Voilà! We did the last 300 sq' about twice as fast as the first. And I was able to keep up! Added bonus: my knife work improved thanks to that one super-helpful comment from Paul about putting the pressure on the leading half of the knife, so as not to leave a line on the already-skimmed portion. Seemed so obvious after-the-fact, but I hadn't figured that out on my own. Thanks for the technique.

Thank you so much for this video. I just bought a house with wall paper every where, and when I removed the paper the walls were a hot mess. I wasn't sure how to fix it w/o hiring a professional and paying thousands added to an already tight budget because I'm doing a total makeover of this solid but very dated house. After watching this I feel confident I can do this myself.

I’m in the same boat! Two layers of wallpaper with paint in between each layer. WHY??? Just bought the house in December so I’ve only completed one room. This technique will definitely be used in the remainder of them. I have one room with paneling and it’s not in the budget to replace it yet. I’m wondering if this could be an option. Hmmm…..

Thank you Leah and Paul for your professional videos! This all started with bad carpet in the den and a hallway. Ok, so my lady drags me down to a floor store and we buy some purty plank tile really cheap. Then I learn all the mastic has to disappear off the concrete and so on...get the feeling I've just been snookered. The carpet is gone, then this idea pops up that it would be better to paint before the floor is down. She wants the popcorn ceiling gone. The ceiling had lifting tape showing everywhere in the corners and all joints. OK, scraped it off, applied Gardz on a cathedral ceiling and wallpaper walls after scraping off the wallpaper too. My new paper joints don't look to bad if you use really thick glasses from a hundred yards, but I'm getting there. I just can't seem to comb correctly without creating new ridges or jagged edges I have to deal with. Shows how inexperience can create a steep learning curve.....how else can I explain I'm trying to finish out a cathedral ceiling laced and crosslaced with trim everywhere as my first project? Ha!

Glad I came across this video. I've been renovating a house in my off time. The house is brick with rendered walls. The render was done quite badly. So I used joint compound to skim the walls. No idea if this was the done thing or not but it came up good and also got rid of the hairline cracks in the cement render. The only bit I wish I'd seen sooner was the paint roller technique. I did it all with a trowel. This would of made life so much easier. Helpful video if only 2 years late for me!!

bg147, yes he is correct. If you use this technique properly it will be minimal sanding. The key is to roll on consistently and wipe off the joint compound consistently. Its probably gonna take at least 2 to 3 go rounds of skim coating. Good luck, -Paul

Okay, I'll try the roller, and your knife technique looks good. I do recommend a real mud paddle though as life is too short to wait for that mortar mixer to get done. Also, bumping the bucket while mixing can cut tiny ribbons of plastic from the bucket creating a nightmare while skimming. Your finish looks great!

Question is can I use this method to smooth out wall imperfections on plaster? What kind of compound would I use on plaster?

Very informative video. I’m glad you decided to use a stationary camera the second time around. The first video created motion sickness. It would be great if you could use a bit more lighting and show the final surface at an angle so the viewers can see what the finished surface should look like. If I have plastered walls and want to replace one wall, can I use this same method with plaster? Should I just use the rolled and then a knock-down tool to replicate the existing plaster finish? Thank you.

Hi Leah, Love your videos! If there isn't any drywall paper showing is there any prep before applying a skim coat?

Thank you for this information. We are planning to do a skim coat in our bathroom this weekend. Do you have any advice for the small area between the door frame and the wall? It's about 1" of wall that I'm not sure how to reach with putty.

Hi Paul just took down tons of old wall paper in an old house. lots of tape residue and holes to patch up. Wondering before the skim coat and fixing the holes if I should seal with a primer like Gardz, or should I fix the holes with Joint compound and mesh tape and then seal with Gardz before skim coating? thanks so much for the wonderful video.

Hi Paul, I'm glad Leah pulled you in to the public. I'll get straight to the point. I painted my basement floor. Taped it off diamond shaped, but absolutely loved the silhouette-look of the tape underneath be the paint. So I completed the job without peeling off the tape. I went over the whole floor with a product suggested by Home Depot to protect the painted surface. But we had a big rainfall a couple weeks ago and the paint bubbled on only be where the painter's tape was applied. What can I do to keep waterproof my paint job? (Can't afford to waterproof my basement)

Excited to try this. Our Walls are desperate for a new finish. Do I need to prepare the wall at all, or can I just go over any type of old painted Sheetrocked or plastered surface

This is great! If you wanted to add a skip trowel texture instead of a smooth one, but there is existing texture underneath, do you do what’s described here and then do what’s described in Leah’s skip trowel video? Or is that too many steps/coats?

Wow! Just in time for me. I just got a 1955 ranch house. The ceilings was done with the half moon swirls on it and i was like this isn't going to be fun. I think i can do this then im going to use my gun to do a knock down ceiling. Thank you!

For a harder finish and greater moisture resistance, could a setting type joint compound like Easy Sand 90 be used instead?
