it's been quite a while since an incident on March 30th, 2024 closed the La Salle Causeway to all traffic. Events have been unfolding slowly - with the most impactful being the announcement on May 29th that, as a result of significant damage sustained in the incident, the historic lift bridge was beyond economic repair and was to be demolished. This video relates the story as it unfolds with the arrival of Priestly Demolition Inc in June and the start of work on removing the bridge.

Your videos are always so well done, I said it before, it's like something I'd watch on the Discovery channel 👍

Well - it's really good of you to say so - I do try to generate the best record I can of some of the interesting things that happen in my region, but I find that I always feel that I can do better. Comments like yours are enormously encouraging though. Thank you.

Incredibly sad. As a child I spent many hours at the bridge, hanging out with the bridgemaster. Tragic to see its end. That said, I do understand the decision -- the bridge was extremely finicky even before the accident. Due to thermal expansion, it was sometimes really hard to close and lock. Add a twisted beam to the mix and all the alignment issues that come with such an event, that bridge would have been damn near impossible to operate reliably. Greetings from Switzerland.

Neil - I share your sentiments about the bridge - and understand the reason for decisions that have been made. It’s no less unfortunate. I hope that something appropriate to the environment and the historic sites around the Causeway will replace it.

I can remember falling asleep to the sound of the tires on the bridge.

Yes, it's been a very familiar and comforting sound to so many over the years - please tell me you weren't driving at the time 😁

Kingston, Ontario seems like such a beautiful place in the summer months. Greetings from Ottawa.

Carle - it's an attractive city in the winter months too - but Summer is quite special. We are fortunate, like Ottawa, to have some amazing historic sites. Thanks for watching the update and for your positive comment

you should try and get in contact with PDI and maybe film some drone video for them and their RU-vid channel.

Pretty sad to see this historic bridge destroyed. But little engineering lasts forever and we may get something very special in its place...
