Film & Sound - Tom Scott
The Grand Organ of Luçon Cathedral
Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, Paris (1857)
The organ was cleaned, without changes, by Louis Debierre of Nantes in 1899.
In 1967 the organ was restored by K. Schwenkendel, Strasbourg.
This included:
The enlarging of the pedal department from 25 to 32 notes.
The completetion of the ECHO division which originally consisted of a free reed (Euphone) only, at 8 foot pitch.
The gamba 8 was removed from the Grand Orgue and the Viole 4 was moved to the Echo manual.
The Positif Clairon 4 was made into the Trompette on the Echo manual.

Interesting to hear a performance on this fine Cavaillé - Coll Instrument and also a fine transcription of the Danse Des Sauvages of Rameau. Thank you for uploading this.

Your performance is incredible! What a wonderful sound! That ancient and beautiful organ is a true treasure with so many wonderful sculptures and carvings! The slightly yellowed keyboard must be very old! Thank you both for this beautiful video! ❤❤🥰

You may be interested to know that Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (CC) who arguably was the greatest symphonic organ builder both for the quality of his instruments and the many innovations, was born in Montpellier into a family of organ builders (father, grandfather, uncles) who were of Basque origin and his techniques and skills were hugely influenced by the Iberian school and especially by the organs of Jordi Bosch (1739-1801) who was a renowned Mallorquin 18th century organ builder who was also an innovator and built the celebrated organs of the Cathedral of Seville, the Royal Palace in Madrid and also the monumental organ of Santanyi in Mallorca which was resurrected and restored by Gerhard Grenzing in 1984-6 and indeed that restoration made everyone sit up and realise what a talent Grenzing is. As s young man CC traveled in to Madrid and carefully studied the Bosch organ in the Royal Palace and its from this that CC took inspiration a lot of his own innovation of organ design. CC organs all have a characteristic sound to some degree of what I call ‘shouty’ loud reeds and mixtures and this is the Iberian influence coming through. CC built 6 organs in the UK & sadly only 4 survive. The largest is in Manchester Town Hall which should reopen next year after a massive multi-year restoration. The CC organ is also being fully restored to the state CC left it in, work done by the English organ builder Harrison & Harrison along with the Dutch builder Flentrop who specialise in famous historic mechanical organs and almost certainly it will be Jonathan who performs the reopening concert. Jonathan and Tom uploaded a video on the Manchester CC a few years ago just before it was dismantled for restoration. That concert will be an event of genuine international organ significance.

Greetings from Boise, Idaho! What a grand instrument! I marvel at the mechanical genius of these organ makers! I can't imagine all the intricate manual linkages that allows this instrument to sound! Perhaps a video of the mechanical "behind the scenes" action would be in order! Many thanks to you both! I look forward to your visit to Salt Lake City!

Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (CC) arguably was the greatest symphonic organ builder both for the quality of his instruments and the many innovations. What’s interesting is that his organs owe more to the Iberian/Occitanian style of organ building than to the French Baroque style. He was born into a family of organ builders who were of Basque origin and his techniques and skills were influenced by the Iberian school and especially by the organs of Jordi Bosch (1739-1801) a renowned Mallorquin 18th century organ builder who was also an innovator and built the organs of the Cathedral of Seville, the Royal Palace in Madrid and the organ of Santanyi in Mallorca which was resurrected and restored by Gerhard Grenzing in 1984-6.
