Another great video. As for the re-recordings, they’re interesting to hear but yeah they’re definitely not as good as the originals. I agree about that garbage when they changed the lyrics of Antichrist to Anticop. That was complete crap.
@analogarchives

I can't stand that Anticop song. I hate when bands try to distance themselves from their past especially things that have occult leanings. Just own it!

I always enjoy hearing your thoughts on music Dennis… & when I first heard they were re doing these 2 albums… my heart sank! I really struggle with the polished modern production sound of some of the new Death Metal bands nowadays… not the old school sounding bands… but the modern style that almost doesn’t even sound like Death Metal… to me anyway!! A p*ss poor rough & raw production is okay with me… as like you… I wanna hear the enthusiasm & the naivety in the playing… the pure passion for what they have created! ‘Old School is the Best School’ brother!🤘🏻

I first heard Sepultura when they released BTR and soon after I got their earlier albums, which I knew were going to be lo-fi but I don't mind that, but I always think with lo-fi recordings, "how would they sound with better production". So, I always look forward to hearing albums that have been remastered, remixed or re-recorded, sometimes I like the newer versions and sometimes I prefer the originals and sometimes I can't hear any difference. With theses re-recordings I'm completely blown away, they are so brutal and dark compared to the originals, they fit in perfectly with the energy that is felt on Schizo and Remains(my two favourite Sep albums, joint first). I still love the originals, but I can't remember ever playing them through more than once, with these re-recordings they are being played back all day long, and I prefer the new artwork too, kinda like the artwork of Phil Lawvere, Kreator, Deathrow, Celtic Frost artist. Good to hear your opinion and all the comments. I stopped following Sepultura when they released Chaos AD, I was already disappointed with Arise when it was released and Chaos AD was to much for me. I got to see them on Arise and Chaos AD tours and they were the loudest band I have ever heard.

This review went exactly how I expected! I listened to the track online and was more impressed than I was expecting to be, but it's like any modern thrash for me. Too clean, too clinical, lost its raw edge. That Testament "First Strike Still Deadly" re-recording of the first couple albums comp is a good example of making things worse. And it's pretty lame that it had to be two releases. Make a 2LP. Obviously the people that want these will buy both, so that supports the cash-grab theory.
@analogarchives
@analogarchives Год назад
Yea Simon at least give the fans both records in one release, if NWN can do it for cheaper with more bells and whistles per release you can see that this is just to get metalheads to fork over a ton of money for basically a cover band at this point , Cheers
@Hecatecrossways

What is ridiculous is waiting 30 years to redo an album. Especially when you consider that 30 years prior to the release of the Black Sabbath debut there was no Rock music in existence. If people don't like rough quality early Black, Death, and Thrash Metal albums then no one needs to listen to it. It makes about as much sense as some 1940 Big band swing group re recording their albums in the 1970s . The whole point of Destruction, Sodom, Hellhammer, and Sepultura was the rough quality production. If someone prefers the cleaner styles of Extreme Metal they can listen to modern Death and Thrash Metal

I have not listened to them yet, but I think if you don't have special relationship with an older record, and have not listened that much to old stuff with gritty production, re-recordings is awesome for them. I can't think of a single re-recording that has worked for me with stuff I already heard before, except for The Final Massacre by Vader on Litany, it's the best version. Necrodeath's re-recording of Fragments of Insanity (called Defragments of Insanity) was the first version I heard, did not realize it was a re-recording until a couple of years later and when I heard the original it's kind of weak, so I definitly prefer the re-recording, but I bet people who liked the original does not like the re-recording. I also don't like when band do this cash grab, of course it's going to sound different, newer and better instruments, record studios, technincs and in most cases different musicians and that's the key element, you can't expect another guy to replicate a sound, that's impossible to do..... and finally the prices!!! i would have been much "honest" to the fan to release it as a double disc. cheers and be well

I agree with basically everything you said, especially your points about the re-recording actually taking away from the historical importance of the original, the overpricing, and the fact they could (should) have just recorded something in a similar style instead. Coming from the perspective of someone who wasn’t even around until a decade or so after these were released, I’m super glad to have heard the originals first. I was lucky enough to score the 2-on-1 CD version at a yard sale for 25 cents about 10 or 12 years ago and definitely wasn’t ready for it at the time. I had just barely started getting into stuff like Sepultura and Slayer at that point and it was just too raw and intense for me, but over the last few years I’ve really come to appreciate it for what it is. Like you said, the weird guitar tone and the sloppiness gives it a lot of charm and that is completely missing with the new version, it’s like all the life and energy is sucked out of it. I especially miss the youthful anger and intensity of Max’s vocals from the original, he doesn’t sound bad now but there’s just kind of a lack of passion and attitude. Anyway great video as always man, thanks for all the quality content. Cheers 🤘🤘

Hey Dennis. Good review, I agree nothing can bite like the originals. Wasn't the new art done by Eliran Kantor? Agreed its uninspired. Anyway nothing beats the original "Morbid Visions" & "Bestial Devastation" artwork done by Silvio from the mighty Chakal (hiding it from his religious Xian parents) And the vokills of skinny teenager Max shreds the shite out the larynx of fatcore 2020s Max. Still I enjoyed it soundwise and appreciate they kept the riffs and structure of the original but yeah very likely a cash-grab. I will try buy it but not for that price. The reason the original Sepultura went down in 95 was a "Sharon Osborne" (whom the wife/manager had become friends with) attempted Coup over the payments of the other band members that failed bad. Anyway by then both Seps and Soulfly were treading in mud. Also their gatekeeping of any other Brazilian metal bands was always something that disgusted me - sad really. I'd always promote my countrymen but not these guys. PS- the positive side, I've always seen people downplay the early records, at least with this they can understand the genius behind those classics

I already own the original and because I have so much old school originals I still need and want I’m not going to put my money into something RE DONE. The original didn’t need to be touched so I’ll pass. May listen to it one day. But as a collector of the old school I prefer to save and spend my money on the era that paved the way. It’s rare I’ll even touch a repress as I see it as I’ll wait for the slight chance I’ll stumble across it at a bargain price ( original ) or I just missed out and I’m sure I’ll find another gem along my travels. 80’s 90’s is where it’s at for me and it takes a lot to have me spend my money on anything new and this release won’t be one of them. But really appreciate you doing a review as it gave me a good understanding of what I’ll be in for if I finally give it a full listen. Thank you Dennis. Finally someone who shares my opinion on these. I am a big Sepultura fan out there. I own their whole catalog, I also own all of Soulfly and Cavalera Conspiracy as well. So I obviously do like the later output from both bands. However those first 5 Sepultura releases are untouchable for me. Chaos AD is pretty close as well. I totally see your point of view. I completely get why you aren’t into a lot of that later metal sound. I respect that. I am however right there with you on these re records. Completely utterly pointless. The originals are perfect. One thing too is these two releases are one of the main foundations for extreme South American metal. I absolutely worship that stuff. It has it’s own sound that is more evil and savage than pretty much any other material from any other region of the world, at least to me. For example Sarcofago’s INRI just stomps over any of the wave two Norwegian black metal albums ever produced but that’s just my opinion. Those early South American bands didn’t have expensive instruments or higher end production so they made up for it with their pure passion and rawness and it feels and sounds so genuine. It’s on par with that early German stuff that came just a year or two before it. Sepultura was my gateway to all that South American stuff. Parabellum from Colombia, Pentagram from Chile. Were right there with Sepultura but even more obscure. I didn’t discover them however until much later. But bands like Sarcofago, Vulcano, Holocausto, Sex Trash, Taurus, Dorsal Atlantica, Korzus, Panic, Chakal, Mystifier, Expulser, Acid Storm, Insulter etc etc. Bestial Devastation and Morbid Visions led the whole Brazilian pack. For me to re record those two releases is almost a slap in the face to that early South American sound. They basically sound like a new band trying to sound like an old band having superior tools but missing that authenticity. Keep in my you are probably aware but a lot of people may not be that there are a ton of new or newer South American bands that still sound like they could have come out of 1984 through 1988. Esquizofrenia from Colombia are the best early Sepultura sounding band out there. They got it nailed. They sing completely in Spanish though which honestly I always prefer those bands to sing in Portuguese or Spanish or broken English because it just adds to the heaviness and intensity. Perversor from Chile is another one. They would be more of an early Sarcofago. Witchtrap also from Colombia nails that early 80s speed metal sound. If you haven’t I really recommend you check out some of the newer South American bands out. I think a true OG like yourself would find some newer stuff you’d dig. Here’s my last point if these recordings had been live I would have had a lot less of a problem with it. But people PLEASE if you like these new recordings and haven’t heard the Troops of Doom from Brazil. Do so!! Right now! They are Jario Gudez’s band. You know, the original guitar player from Sepultura that was on the original recordings. He also was in the killer band the Mist. He covered just a few of the tracks from the originals and did a ton of actual original new songs. They are killer. They have a bit of that newer production but they are well? Original! New! Not all covers and in my opinion still have that South American passion and intensity. Thanks for the review Dennis you said pretty much everything that needed to be said about these remakes.
