CAVEMAN a Joshua Tree Bouldering Classic | All Variations | V6-V10
Caveman is a classic Joshua Tree boulder problem located in Hidden Valley Campground. This unique rock climb can be done many different ways. The first ascent was done by John Bachar and the sit start or "yabo" start was added by John Long. Later harder variations like Monkeyclaw and Full Missing Link were added by Robert Miramontes and Rob Mulligan. In this video you can see all the different ways this cave can be climbed. Be sure to like the video and leave a comment with your thoughts.

I can't imagine warming up for the day by doing all these variations, what a beast! So cool to finally see some footage of them too I do like the climb better without the "hidden hold" personally, much less dabby and awkward. Super fun boulder regardless, great video man!

Rad video, dude! Cool to see all the variations and get a bit of history, shame there's no footage of Bachar on these classics. And thanks for the shout out!

There’s been some confusion regarding the v10 sit to Caveman whether you’re “allowed” to start via a kneebar and the high left undercling (like Alan). I’ve spoken to a few friends who said they climbed it from a lower, very crumbly left hand as a ‘true sit’... I did the boulder the same way as Alan, but was always very curious what the locals and OG Josh crew thought. Either way, a true classic. Awesome vid Cole, looking forward to more

Thank you for the comment and insight. Yeah it's really confusing on the sit start. Miramontes mentions on MountainProject that the sit start holds have crumbled significantly over the years. Knowing that and seeing that Alan was unable to pull off the ground from the "true" sit, makes me wonder if that way is even possible anymore. Would be super awesome to see someone do it that way. Until then I'd love to hear thoughts on the grade of the sit start with the knee bar. What did you think?

Hard for me to say, it’s basically a sport climb which I consider anti style. That being said I could see 9 or 10 depending who you ask, no individual moves harder than v8

Man this guy at 5 min has endurance for days, he's adjusting his grip like 3-5 times on every move and still being solid and tight af.

Interesting to hear they used wire brushes to clean the problem, since that is no longer allowed. At least I think its not allowed?
@GiantRock
@GiantRock 4 года назад
Nothing wrong with a wire brush if used correctly on the right type of rock. Becomes a problem when overused or used on soft rock like sandstone. The monzonite out here is pretty resilient, though I will say I've never needed a wire brush when doing new problems. This cave was pretty unique in that people had fires in there over many years and I imagine it was pretty torched.

What a beautiful piece of rock. Was gonna compliment the guy on not using chalk until at 6:35 he loaded up several times lol

I couldn’t even climb that. Getting old is the strangest experience. I don’t even care anymore I am cool with it. Although I do feel like a worthless human being. In my youth it would have drove me mad until I climbed every variation. But whatever… I want a redo in life. I spent my 20s on drugs and wild women. Most of which I can barely remember. No regrets at all! But Noah lived 950 years what do I have to do to get 900 more? Not a rhetorical question.

I dont agree with holds being off-limits. Unless the holds make the climb incredibly contrived it is "on".
@GiantRock
@GiantRock 2 года назад
I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with? You are free to climb it anyway you want, the only thing stipulated is that if you want to do it the original way like John Bachar then don't use the hidden hold.
@Cragdognamedbear
@Cragdognamedbear 2 года назад
@@GiantRock Yes I think thats what I meant. I think I was referring to incredibly contrived climbs in general. Disregard please.

"Let us know in the comments if you've ever done it" .... well, most people have not ever done it, sorry. :D Regarding the hidden hold, does it matter if you use it or not according to the 'grading rules'? It's there and you're doing a boulder problem. You use it or you don't. The grading should just take both/the easiest way into account, unless if it's a thing that involves physical limitations or differences like "short/tall people do it better/easier" or "strong/technical people do it better/easier". Bit of a grapes-to-peaches comparison but whatever. Outside everything is allowed if it's possible at least to my understanding, but by all means feel free to disagree.

The fact that it's called "Hidden Hold" when it's not really very hidden suggests to me that it was actually just overlooked when the problem was established because those guys didn't feel like it was necessary, i.e. it didn't particularly help (not to say that using it might not have made the problem a little easier for them, but that it felt doable without it). And then the fact that it's also called the "Lynn Hill variation" suggests to me that maybe if you don't use it, the problem becomes particularly harder there for shorter people or people with smaller hands, than it is if you are tall. I've never tried it though (and am not a good enough climber to do either, I'm sure) so who knows. But I agree with Giant Rock's point that having to rule out a certain hold kind of takes away from the quality a little, and I really appreciate Alan Moore's thoughts about the subjectivity of grading. Regardless, really cool set of problems there and I enjoyed the video a lot. Hopefully I will check it out in person sometime!
