That Raider defence of the early 80's was phenomenal. Rod Martin, Matt Millen, Ted Hendricks, Matuszak, Lester, Haynes, Alzado & Howie! 🏴☠️ "Forget About it!"
@Myke Mynah Went to a crowded SB party where Everyone jumped on the Wash. Band Wagon. Except my buddy & I we're the only 🏴☠️ Fans! We were dressed in our Blk. leather jackets! 😄 Loved the Block Punt early in the game, by Jenson! Then right before Halftime, Theismann throws a pick 6 on some lame ass Screen play! (Great film study by 🏴☠️) My Buddy & I we're the only 1's "Yelling & Cheering" for 🏴☠️ The party's Host almost asked us to leave the party! 😁 Raider 🏴☠️ Nation 👍
Oh but you forgot the all time Raiders sack leader....Greg Townsend. Also McElroy, Kinlaw and Pickel was really good also. You're right how many pro bowlers/all pros or hall of fames were on that 80's D (especially 83)?
Before Reggie White emerged as the Minister of Defense, Howie Long was the most dominant defensive lineman during his era, which included Mark Gastineau and Dexter Manley.
Both cut from the same cloth. Both played all positions on the defensive line. Both could have played in the 1950s. Howies career was longer & he definitely had more media exposure I’d take both!!
Howie Long DEFINED his era of football. Played every D-line position there is and flourished at everyone of them. This is coming from a Lifelong Steeler fan since 72. But also a football fan, That 83 Raider defense in particular was one of the all time great defenses that really no one knows about . RIP Alzado. Belongs in HOF
@@kevincostello3856 joe Klecko also played every position including nose tackle.. Great player who played with Mark Gastono.. I been a steeler fan and raider fan since 1961.. I also am a deep fan of the Seahawks for the last 35 years..
I grew up liking the old school Raiders.....Alzado, Pickel, Long and all them mean ass great players back in the days? I played high school football with my number being 75 of course. Years later my son started pop Warner football all the way to high school senior being number 75..... we both love #75. I'm a huge long fan.
Got drafted and got to watch Howie every day. An extremely cool, down to earth guy. Our conversations sure settled down a somewhat awestruck rookie. He took the time, and to this day, I appreciate it.
@@UncleJakesRaidersVideos Dude. LOVE your Townsend clips. Greg was my locker neighbor. One of the all time happiest, coolest people I've ever met. Dude was a cold baller....for sure.
The gentleman defensive end, a multi dimensional player who defended the run and rushed the passer with equal skill, rarely left the game, Howie Long! Back when Al was still a defensive guru when it came to evaluating talent, some of those skills he picked up working the drafts with John Madden of course, but he used to sign juco no name and other organizations cast offs, all that mattered was whether they could play! Maxx Crosby is cut from the same mold!
I remember visiting the Raider camp in Napa, CA, in 1984. All the players were cool, but Howie was especially gracious and most welcoming. Nice man, great player. Has the largest and thickest hands I've ever shook.
Only Reggie White & Bubba Smith can arguably be considered better than Howie Long! Howie Long is probably the best who ever played besides White and Smith! We went to a Raiders game in the mid-eighties when Billy Sims who won the Heisman Trophy was playing for the Lions. The Raiders won that game 6-3. The lions had second-and-goal from the 2-yard line and Howie Long made two of the most amazing plays I've ever seen in my life. Long was playing Left defensive end. Most teams are better running to their right. On both second and third down Howie Long beep double-teams, despite the fact that the Lions stacked their formation toward Howie's side, broke into the backfield and made tackles for losses on consecutive plays!Lions had to kick a field goal and the Raiders won that game partially because of Howie Long's 2 plays! Film clips reflect how awesome he was congratulations Howie Long!
Chris Long has done so much for the rams and got a ring with the patriots and even a ring with the eagles and won against the patriots Howie is a Proud father
Yea but Chris ain't a Raider! He had a chance and didn't believe !!!..You even know how much love Nation would have gave him? Still love his pod cast ...
The way the Raiders moved Howie Long up and down the defensive line offensive coordinators and QBs always wanted to know where 75 was, I've seen Long throw guards and tackles to the ground with one arm, Howie Long was a badass Raider, Anyone who played against him would tell you that, And he's in Canton, Long was one of the best.
Loved the old style NFL. No nonsense. They played the game like it should be played. Not like this crap we see today. Sadly, the Oakland Raider mystique is forever gone. Howie Long fit their agenda perfectly.
I was happy to see my kid brother in this tribute and Howie did make him look as bad as many other O-linemen in the highlights. I can personally attest to Howie's effect on women - in 1991 my wife and I were waiting for my brother after a MNF dame against the Raiders. I had my back the the tunnel where the players came out when I noticed every women in the parking lot whip their head around to watch Howie emerge from the tunnel. To close this out my old college coach, became the head coach of Howie's alma mater, Villanova. He retired as their winningest coach and they named a building after him - it has the Howie Long weight room in it. I really enjoyed this piece
I worked at the Bank that Howie and his wife Diane were customers at, both of them were so nice and the two sons were well behaved. It was a pleasure to have them as customers.
Yeah Howie, you were pretty good! About 10 or 12 years ago, Howie and Terry were talking about surgeries and Howie said 13 and counting. Welcome to the NFL gents! I was lucky enough to play at the college level with Coach McKay, where I played DE in the styles of Long and Alzado. Coach liked it!
The bit about the Raiders’ acquiring of Alzado’s rights, and that being the difference in Howie Long, makes me think of way back when the Phillies signed Pete Rose, and eventually Mike Schmidt and Larry Bowa and all those young guys finally gelled and won a World Series...cuz time was running out for that group of guys.
Long was such a cerebral player. He never needed to be angry like an Alzado to do his job. He used his first step and power to beat offensive linemen and he never tried to hurt anyone like the 70s Raiders did. Once he knew the QB or RB was wrapped up he'd let them fall down. I always liked that about him.
The Autumn Wind by Steve Sabol The Autumn Wind is a pirate Blustering in from sea, With a rollicking song, he sweeps along, Swaggering boisterously. His face is weather beaten. He wears a hooded sash, With a silver hat about his head, And a bristling black mustache. He growls as he storms the country, A villain big and bold. And the trees all shake and quiver and quake, As he robs them of their gold. The Autumn Wind is a raider, Pillaging just for fun. He'll knock you 'round and upside down, And laugh when he's conquered and won.
@@richardmorris6365 "The Autumn Wind" was narrated by John Facenda and written by Steve Sabol in 1974 for NFL Films. It was adapted from Mary Jane Carr's "Pirate Wind".
Even though I've been a lifelong Cowboys fan I always had a quiet admiration for the Raiders because of their tenacity and physicality. I also loved the old school bully flyers and the Bad boy pistons too so maybe I'm just partial to teams that will sometimes cross that line of what's acceptable. All those teams had a mystique about them, an intimidation factor and the raiders were maybe the most notorious of them all.
I'm just now learning about this whole 70s raiders and I'm honestly intrigued by all of this. This is that savage football that other teams wish they had the intensity to play with 💯💯💯
My Girl and I saw You in Hawaii on vacation decades ago. Dudes built like a brick house. I've worked for Coach Madden in Carmel and followed my Raiders hero's....Mr Long and his Kids are a testimony itself of value's and success..
And *"one stare down, move along"* at the parking lot at (now Wincos) market in North Long Beach CA parking lot "phew" now I know how those QB's felt!!! Mr. Long is still my favorite Raider!!!
I think Alzado and Shell could bring the beast out of Dudley do right. I think that Howie Long is easily in the top 5 as far as dominant defensive ends who played this game. He accomplished everything a player could in the NFL.....pro bowl, super bowl......HOF. Very few can say this. God bless you Howie Long.
paul Zimmerman's comment about Howie Long is a precise example of why I don't waste time following "experts" or "mock drafts". nearly all of the so called experts (in any sport) are jokes. the only decent ones are ones that played the game and many times, they have no clue what they are talking about. it always saddens me when people mention the Raider Mystique. when Howie Long joined the Raiders, Al Davis had made the mistake that would begin the crumbling of the Mystique. doubt it? it has been 36 years since the Raiders won a Super Bowl and have only appeared in 1 since. Los Angeles ate away at the Mystique that was built in Oakland, Al Davis did the rest by turning on his best player in the 80's, Marcus Allen, as well as other decisions. the greatness he built in the 60's and maintined in the 70's was eaten away in the 80's. yes the early 90's saw some success, and the turn of the century was a very good team, but that fabled Raider Mystique is long gone. who would ever equate "The Autumn Wind" with any Raider team since the last Super Bowl champions of Long, Alzado, Allen, Plunkett, Christensen, Hayes and that last true Raider team?
that Zimmerman is the one that once said that Snake Stabler should not be in the Hall of Fame....... yeah he knows lots about foot ball, right? and you are right, that Mystique is lost, sadly (and I am not a Raider fan). Now they move to Vegas!!! even if they go back to win a super bowl will be weird to acknowledge the team as Las Vegas Raiders.
The “Raider Mystique”, and “The Autumn Wind” are just some stuff somebody “made up”. The reality is, football players are just football players, and they look for any edge they can get. When the Raiders were still the most successful franchise in the four major North American sports, the Silver and Black was, I’m sure, terrifying for other teams. The MAIN problem is that Al Davis started to believe his own bullshit, and thought that anything and everything he touched would turn to gold. He made Marcus Allen the target of his anger and animosity for YEARS, for god-knows-why, really. He became a feeble old man who couldn’t get the F out of his own way. Allowing Tampa Bay to just HAVE Gruden cost them a Super Bowl, and was just the final straw that proved that Al Davis was DONE as a serious owner.
I learned technique sitting alone in the dark in the linebacker room watching iso's of Howie Long, then going outside to practice what I'd watched over & over
For so many years howie showed what a real defensive lineman could do..Howie was unmatched and and only Joe Klecko of the jets was such a great player during this era.. Both were quick and so very strong.. Above all else both were very smart. I so enjoyed there two fro so many years. I am not a jets fan but been a raider fan since 1961.. If you never saw them play .. ha to bad..
I saw Howie Long on a panel of Hall of Fame Defensive players where Randy White said you had to feel as though you were toughest guy on the field. Howie Long laughingly responded well at least the top 5. Hilarious!
Played in a pick up basketball game against Howie at the Manhattan Beach, CA outdoors courts in late 1985 or early '86. Bill Walton with two of his sons (then very young) hung out there to watch games. Dave Wohl hogged a full court to play guys one on one half court on weekend mornings when was a coach with The Lakers. Played against Danny Schayes there too. But, Howie played with abandon. He would box out on defense, get the rebound and then dribble full court full speed without looking up and drove straight toward his team's basket and basically dared anyone to get in front of him. He'd try to lay it up and usually got fouled from the side or from behind. I thought he's risking his career playing full tilt on a hard tar surface, but apparently he never got hurt there. Played with abandon and was fearless. Stuck in my mind obviously.
No doubt about it! Howie Long was a dominant Defensive End! I still remember the Bears vs Raiders "84" game I think there was 6 QB's knocked out of the game & out of their minds! Howie Long was part of that destruction! Howie had the power, speed and was athletic enough to over power most NFL linemen trying to block him! He reminded me of The Great HOF'ER DE Doug Atkins
I believe his greatness is measured in disruption. He would destroy plays without getting a sack or tackle and therefore it can't be measured in statistics. He could play anywhere on the line and create a mismatch.
I always find it crazy how small these guys get once out of the NFL. There is couple lineman I saw like 100 lbs lighter. Same for Dwayne Johnson. He did that football movie that was a kids movie. His neck was so skinny and his overall size. We have gotten so use to juiced up athletes.
Mine Too! Infact my HS football jersey was #75. I didn't get to wear it during pop warner because we were literally fighting for that number, as well as #77 (Alzado), #99 (Gastineau). So the Coach DeLuca setup "King of the Pit". All challengers and takes for a particular jersey numbers, you were going to have 'earn' it. It was the 80s! You could get away with that stuff back then. We were latchkey kids, we didn't have helicopter parents, and our dads' said, "if you want it, go fight for it." We weren't wussies back then either! I ended up with #68 throughout middle school. 🙁 But got my number #75 in HS, as well as starting D-End 3-out-of-4 years, and a spot on the All-Star team my Senior year.
