This battle feels so different with Astarion as a companion rather than a lover. You fight for him, but have Gale on your mind as well.

I just love "This isn't you Astarion. Not really" option when talking to him in the crypt. His answer to that is the most interesting and gives you some actual reasons as to why he wants to do it or even behaves sometimes in an unkind why to people he considers weak, and it's just self-loathing. Pity, it's one of the most unpopular ones since even after learning all his backstory and going to the crypt people still misjudge him and believe that "this is him". I'm happy you chose this option, paid actual attention to his story and didn't once blame him for obeying orders he couldn't physically disobey because of mind control. You'd be surprised how many people blame him here. It's just victim blaming and it's awful.
