Gracias el que! I would say it depends, if you are doing mostly off-road then honestly the CRF may still be the best option, it is >100lbs lighter and half the price of the CB after upgrades... I am super impressed with the CB500X abilities, but at the end of the day it is a big(ish) heavy road-bike that I spent a decent amount of money on to make more off-road capable. But for me, having long stretches of pavement ahead of me, I wanted to enjoy the bike both on and off-road and this is about as small a bike as I could have and still enjoy the paved parts. So it really depends on what you intend to use the bike for. Either way, you will have a blast!

Modifications are very personal,what you want for your bike.I've just bought a CB500x,2021 model after much research.I just wanted to be able to ride on the fantastic dirt roads not far from where I live,here in Australia,and have a bike comfortable to go away on.So far,changed tires to Dunlop Trailmax Mission,love them,front tracks really true,will do me for what I want.Barkbusters on,don't need heated grips,wind protection good enough.As I have centre stand,skid plate is SRC,good quality,protects oil filter.Radiator guard fitted.Ventura rear rack on,only need top box for my travels,too old for camping.Next to come,Hepco and Becker crash bars,better protection for engine and paint,as they are 2 piece rather than one.Have been having a lot of fun on the dirt roads,just have to learn more as have been road rider,but like the handling of the Honda,good for my height and weight,ps,called mine Dora

I have a 2018 CB 500 X I like vry much. MY fix for a luggage Box was very simple. I bought a Black Luggage Rack and on top of that I mounted one of those Hard Cases from Harbor Freight. Works Great!

Nice! The thing I like with the top boxes is that they don’t make your bike any wider, fit a decent amount of stuff and usually lock. They are great to have for a commuter bike or for shorter trips. For my purposes I need a little bit more room, and don’t want to add all the weight up high and back. I have finally, after waiting over a year, received my Trax ADV cases. I will be making a massive sacrifice in weight and width, but I think it will suit my purposes best. Cheers!

Well you can still be interested and just not like the chain oiler lol. They certainly seem very divisive, some people swear by them and other feel the same as yourself. Excuse my ignorance, can you please enlighten me on why they are so dangerous? The only thing I could think of is oil getting on the back tire, but if installed properly it shouldn’t be an issue? Unless potentially you drop/crash it and something hits exactly where the oil exit is and pushed it over onto the tire?? The one I have isn’t long enough to do that (I think/hope!)

Very interesting video- and well explained. As an owner of the original, 2013 CB500X I'd love one of the new models, but the old one just still runs like a dream after 108000Km, and I'm pretty frugal. I'd be interested to hear how you rate the TKC80's after a while. I had them on - loved them... until they wore. With that soft compound they squared off really fast (note how yours are only really worn right in the middle) then they became literal death-traps on wet bitumen, with the tiniest of contact patches once you had to lean. I had both wheels go on me at a mere 15K/Hr on a tight bend and was lucky to save it. As you said - very soft compound. I've stuck with Shinko 705s for years now, I do tend to do massive miles on the tar to get to great off road rides (Australia) and find the Shinkos handle everything but deep mud or sand, which even the TKC80's would struggle with. The bike looks great, Rally Raid - yes it's expensive, but you certainly get what you pay for :) Oh - BTW I thought there was no way of having the centre stand with the Rally Raid Bash plate?
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 3 года назад
Hey Captain, I have heard some horror stories about the TKC in the rain alright; I must say you are not making me feel any better about it LOL. I guess we will find out. I am also surrounded by lots of pavement before I can get to decent non-paved surfaces, and so frankly I am not sure that I will put the same tires on again. I will see how the wear/wet handling is and then make a determination. A road-biased tire would have made the 80km rail-trail very tough going on the other hand. I guess it’s all a compromise vs priorities! And yes, maybe I didn’t explain it properly but the Rally-Raid engine guard bolts into where the centre-stand WOULD go, meaning a centre stand is no longer a possibility with the Rally-Raid engine guard. I was trying to say that I found this appealing as bolting directly to the bottom of the frame provides structural integrity and isolates the motor as well as possible, and I don’t care about forgoing the centre stand as I would not have used one anyways. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 No worries mate. Tyres are so funny - I watched an old video of mine recently and though "shit I was going good in those trails, maybe better than I do now" and at the time I was on PR4 road tyres, haha!! Ah OK - I get you now about the centre stand. I actually got a Motea one that mounts to the centre stand mount but also allows the centre stand, but I had to modify the front mounts to come off the engine guards instead of the sump!! My pleasure, be safe and happy mate :)

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 just watched your video from your troubles in Tuk, came to your channel to search the origin of your spoked wheels. My buddy is debating a tubeless conversion for his T7 for our ride to Tuk next June and I mentioned your issues to him. Is it certain that balance beads were the culprit or was it something else? Yeah I think it’s an endless debate, tube vs tubeless. For me it was a no brainer and I’m glad I have them. Most common problem I’ve passed other bikes with on my travels are pinched tubes. And I can repair a puncture and keep going without removing the wheel (if needed). I’m not really sure why some ppl prefer tubes. The balancing beads were 100% the culprit. Got stuck in the valve stem and my cascade of issues started with that. No problems since. Have a great trip!!!

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 I agree tubeless are the way to go, for adventure riding it's definitely a lot less headache. Did the repairs in Inuvik end up lasting the rest of your trip? I watched the next vid in the trip and there was no other mention of the tire situation, just wondering what the resolution was for curiosity's sake. We must have just missed meeting you guys on the road by a few days, assuming your trip was in 2022, we came from Fairbanks and the fires were just a week or so into getting going. Denali was completely hidden by smoke, Fairbanks visibility was also poor. We got into Dawson City on July 1st and made it to Whitehorse just as they closed the highway from there to Dawson. then we had to route through the Cassiar due to the washout on the Alaska Highway near contact Creek. Was a hell of a journey.
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 8 месяцев назад
Yeah the repairs held for another 10,000kms or so, all the way home zig/zagging through the US. When I got home I removed the wheel/tire, cleaned it all up and re-sealed the tubeless part. 100% those stupid beads, and it’s been fine since. Although Johns hack-job on my rim up there exposed some aluminum and I recently had another flat due to the aluminum corroding, after some salt riding, and causing air to leak around the bead😔. A domino effect from those beads. I have nightmares about balancing beads. Sanded the rim down and good to keep me going until I get home and will have to refinish the rims eventually. Moral of the story, run away from anyone who mentions balancing beads hahaha. Ah yeah, you were just a week or so behind me, I just made it south as they were closing those roads. What an epic time/trip man 💪. Nothing like the far north, although Patagonia is giving it a run for its money at the moment 😉

Yeah I was thinking about an exhaust, I have not made up my mind one way or another. For the luggage I actually went with a hard set, I was back and forth because of weight/size, but as I would only use the luggage for longer trips I went with hard for “security” purposes, and so that I could fit all the luggage at the sides without needing the top-box (I have never liked passenger/cargo weight up on the rear seat lol). Really enjoyed watching your video, Ken. Your CB500X has definitely evolved into something significantly better & Molly looks fantastic. After a 40 year bike-riding hiatus, I too have been looking at a few middleweight bikes, including the CB500X, NC750X & the F750GS. I am wondering how much were your upgrades, and if you did most/all of the installations or, had them professionally installed. Also, where did you buy all of your accessories? I will definitely personalize & address any perceived deficiencies of the bike that I end up buying, but am wondering at what point, financially, is it perhaps better to just go for a bigger and better more capable ADV bike, versus spending thousands of dollars on upgrades (& possibly messing with your warranty)? Thanks.
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 2 года назад
Cheers Michael, it’s awesome that your getting back into riding! So, the upgrades were a significant amount of money, and from a strictly financial point of view for most people it would probably make more sense to get a bigger, or “more capable”, bike (Tenere 700 for example) for actually a little bit less money. I got all the big stuff from Rally Raid in England, and then ordered the other stuff wherever I could find it. For me, my reasoning behind the bike remains solid; it’s a Honda and has Honda reliability and dealer network behind it. I have 32,000kms on it already from riding to the Arctic and back this summer (stay tuned, spoiler: I get stranded in the Arctic circle haha) and it has been a phenomenal bike. I am hoping that it is not as likely to break down as other bikes, and if so it should be easier to get parts than a BMW or KTM, especially off the beaten track. On the highways I wished I had a bit more power, but off-road lighter and smaller almost always wins. Really, I would say it depends on what kind of riding you want to do, if it is more street oriented get something a little bigger, if more dirt oriented get something smaller. For a true 50/50 ADV bike that you can swap tires and do anything, I think this bike is really hard to beat!

Hmmm, I don’t know about trying to put the exhaust higher. It has taken a beating already, but trying to get it any higher would interfere with my bags (or heat them enough to damage them or the stuff inside). I really wanted to do something about the windscreen, but I have gotten used to it and made do. I was thinking more of a manual/mechanical latch, but I didn’t get around to it. I think trying to do anything electrical would be messing around too much, and adding in one more potential point of failure, it would be cool though!

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 have you seen 650gs and how many other brands capable of placing much higher. On my 650gs I used Staintune single muffler exhaust. Yeah the 650gs has a good exhaust design, up almost under the seat/rear cowling. I like it better than the bigger GS or other bikes with the high-mount side exhaust where the bags and racks have to stick out even further to account for it. In an ideal world the CB exhaust would be more out of the way, but I think it was primarily designed as a road bike with the option for some light off road duties. On a good note, I’ve crashed mine loads of times and the exhaust has gotten a bit scratches and dinged up, but other than that it’s fine. And it can also be used as a frame slider/protector 😂🤣🙏🏼

Thanks Pat! Yeah if your not really going off-road the new generation upgrades aren’t really that crucial, and your 17” front will probably handle a bit better on the pavement; although I must say that with the 19” front on mine it is wonderfully stable, if possibly a little less responsive on turn-in. The oiler is a new one for me, will report back after a seasons riding! Cheers

Why don't the knobby tires have a solid 1 to 2in solid rubber strip down the center of the 5in wide tire? Still leaving plenty of knobs on the edges to get you through the dirt/sand.
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 2 года назад
Yeah I hear ya, the knobbies really melted on the pavement. I got about 8,000kms out of the rear, but after the first 4,000 the road handing suffered greatly, but some of the riding ive done would have been impossible on something less aggressive. A centre-strip down the centre I believe would make these tires redundant though; a solid centre strip would have very low grip on any kind of loose surface (mud, sand, loose dirt/gravel etc.) while upright. There are lots of 60/40 or 70/30 tires with less aggressive tread blocks and a more continuous centre-strip for better on-road manners. I actually just went for a set of Pirelli Scorpion Trail II’s that are a world of improvement on the pavement, but would not take me some of the places I got on the TKC’s.

You probably enjoying riding a very fuel efficient motorcycle. That seat looks very comfortible too. The Bike in general, looks a little cramped for long distance trips. Engine seems under powered for long distance trips with luggage. Wind shield looks to small to ride at high speeds. I wonder how it would look and ride with 21 inch fromt wheel?
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 9 месяцев назад
Yeah the fuel economy is amazing on it, definitely a plus for long distance travel. The seat I actually found quite uncomfortable until I put a sheepskin on it. I think the size is dependent on personal preference and expectation. I’m 5’11” and have done over 70,000kms in about two years, all over North and South America. It’s been great for me. The only time it felt like it was slightly small/underpowered were long days on highways crossing North America. It is plenty big for all of Latin America; that is the trade-off I accepted when buying, because on the other hand I wish I had something smaller/lighter when doing more challenging off-pavement mountain riding etc. I think compromise is inherent in an Adventure bike used for long-distance riding through all terrain, and each person needs to decide what kind of compromise is best for them. The windshield was awful but I don’t think it’s a size issue, more an airflow issue; I put a bigger one in and things were worse. Removing the windshield completely, or putting an “extender”’to clean up the airflow seemed to work for me 💪

Great video, thanks for taking the time to put it all together, it's appreciated! I also own a CB500X, 2020 model. (I call him, Hogan) I purchased mine 2nd Hand about 6 months ago. The bike came with Rally Raid level2 and has the Remote Pre-load adjuster the same as yours. (shown in the vid at 15.25). I had never heard of Rally Raid until I got the bike. I know this is going to sound bizarre, but honestly, I'm not sure how the remote adjuster works. I assume that by winding it in (towards the motor) it stiffens up the suspension and the opposite direction softens the suspension ... correct? I have had a play around with it. It seems to wind "endlessly" in or out (I've wound it at least 20 times inwards and the same outwards) I do notice the difference it makes, but I'm still not sure if I'm doing it right. I've searched everywhere for the "operating" procedure, but no luck so far. So, I'm hoping you might be able to explain to me how it all works? ... please. When I got the bike, the previous owner had modified it with a tall touring screen, but I hated it, as it distorted my field of view and still caused crazy wind buffeting for me (he was around 3 to 4" shorter than me so I guess it worked for him) Fortunately he had kept the OEM screen (especially when a month later I dropped the bike, due to a parking error, and smashed the screen it came with) I then re-installed the OEM screen, set it up at it's maximum height and like you, I then bought a cheap "clip-on" wind deflector for the top of the OEM screen. It's also definitely my favorite modification I've made to the bike, and it was cheap as chips! 👍
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 11 месяцев назад
Yeah the windscreen needs to be adapted or removed if your a certain height, it’s almost unrideable for me with just the stock windscreen. For the pre-Los adjuster; it is to pre-load the suspension to account for the weight that you put on the bike, to help it stop bottoming out. Rotate it towards the motor to lessen the pre-load and away from the motor to add more pre-load (“stiffer”, and “higher”) Mine doesn’t wind endlessly, or at least I haven’t tried to pre-load endlessly. I tried to set my “sag” with the weight of my luggage. So without any luggage I turn it all the way towards the motor until it won’t turn anymore, then back off to the first “click”. With my luggage I add two more “clicks” of pre-load. I don’t think I’m explaining it very well, but I don’t know how else too 😬. Hope it helped somewhat. Enjoy the bike, it’s a great little machine!

Interesting video, thank you. I recently got the same bike (same colour even) and made some of the same modifications. Currently considering Mitas E07+ tyres, did you ever consider them? However, I really like the look of the TKC 80, so hearing you say they were fine on tarmac (at least between 50 and 100kph) was reassuring.
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 3 года назад
Hey Deviate, I considered a lot of tires before going with the TKC. Coming from a road bike background and building myself an adventure bike, I wanted to go all the way. Having put around 2,000km on them I would say the following; for a true 50/50 tire I’m not sure you could do better, quite grippy on the tarmac and great in dirt, very confidence inspiring. That being said, even though I have been going out of my way to do dirt roads/trails, I still have a lot of tarmac to cover before I get to them (and enjoy that also), the one drawback I see so far is they really seem to be chewing away with the high temps here; I don’t see me getting more than 4,000km out of them. That’s not a lot of mileage, even less than I would get on street legal racing tires. So for a lot off off-roading they are great, and for 50/50 if you don’t mind buying them all the time. I can’t comment too much on the Mitas, but use that for comparison. The CB500x forum has LOTS of tire discussion. Cheers!

Sweet ride. I bought a 2014 that was converted with a Full Stage 3 kit (now Stage 2), substantially similar to your setup with more SW Motek crash/guards/rack/bags. Love the bike. It's my "medium old dude adventure" bike. We ride in Rural TN mostly. Great bike and much easier to manage than my buddy's KTM 1090. If you don't have it (and have ABS), the RR ABS switch is a great add-on. I've found the ABS is pretty rudimentary and intrusive when doing aggressive off-road and downhills. AKA you have no brakes going downhill or on loose terrain.

Thanks for the info Dan! I HATE ABS on cars, and so was expecting to dislike it on the Honda, especially off-road. I was going to get the switch but decided to wait and feel it on the bike first; with my rudimentary mechanical skills and non-existent understanding of electricity I am always hesitant to get involved in any sort of wiring; I didn’t even want to install the heated grips myself lol (but did). I have been pleasantly surprised and believe that they updated it since 2014. It does not activate until 5 or 10kph, so any steep and slow downhill it seems to not interfere with stopping, and at least once stopped me from locking up and washing out the front on a rocky downhill slope. That being said, one time it did prevent me from stopping as quickly as I would have liked, and I think that as an amateur off-road who is not in any way trying to lock-up and slide the rear the ABS has proved at least a non-issue and possibly a benefit. That equation may change as I do more off-road and become more comfortable and may necessitate the installation of an ABS switch. I love Tennessee, have a friend down there (also with KTMs lol) and have done some riding up to Deals Gap. I plan on heading back next year when I can get through the border, down to Knoxville/Luttrell area and possibly pick up the T.A.T. Maybe see you out there! Thanks for the info

@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
Thanks Dugald! I am not really sure, it would depend on what you were hoping to accomplish, vs your budget. I don’t know much about the pre 2019s other than my stock suspension was slightly upgraded. It is a fairly capable little bike right out of the box. I think if you went the Rally Raid route there is not a huge gain upgrading a 2016-2019, if not there may be some gains to be had. I will say that the 2022 has not only upgraded suspension, but also twin front brake calipers (the front brake is my biggest gripe on this bike). I kind of went overboard on mine, I could have bought a BMW LOL. But I have over 40,000kms on it already and it has handled roads from the Arctic to Mexico with ease, and any breakdowns (🤞🏻) should be easier to deal with on a simple Honda. I think I heard about some damping rods being bent. Personally, I suspect that the sound just “being part of the bike now” isn’t quite accurate. I used the “Rally Raid Engine Guard”, it was one of the few I could find that used the centre-stand mount point and isolated/protected the motor as much as possible, given the design.

Hey Stew, I got the Renthal Highrise Fatbar and ordered it from Rally Raid in England. I did that because they were shipping me other parts; depending where you live you may be able to save on shipping by finding the handlebar part # on their website and sourcing it locally. They seem to have several recommendations on their website

@@stewtube1240 I have panniers ordered since January, still waiting. In the meantime I got a couple of dry bags that will have to do. The mirrors I will probably leave until I end up smashing one lol, and the exhaust I’m debating but will probably leave until I see how the luggage fits. The seat, however, I am interested in hearing about. The stock seat isn’t quite “uncomfortable”, but is angled and so has a habit of constantly sliding me forward and crushing my sensitive parts lol

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Hey Ken , I have a Corbin seat . Its design makes you feel like your sitting more in the bike ...then on it . I could send a picture if I had an email or text . My seat works on a 2016 and 2017 model for sure , not sure on a 2020 . If it did work you could try it out first as the seat cost around $600 . I am in the Owen Sound area if your ever up this way .

WhyCB500X and not a KLR or Tenere??
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 3 года назад
For me the KLR wasn’t even a consideration, I have an inherent bias against big single cylinder thumpers for on-road use, and I personally feel that the CB500X Rally Raid is better performing in about every way than the KLR, and more enjoyable doing it. Like a “new” KLR lol. The Tenere I can see the argument for for sure. It was just being released as I was building this so I didn’t want to wait for an “unknown” quantity. I think had I done Tenere I would have been equally happy, at the same time the only thing I would wish for is more power on the CB; the Tenere provides it (more power=more fuel) but also provides a more dirt oriented approach, more power in the dirt isn’t where I need it. The CB500X ergos are more on-road focused (which is where I am used to riding, and definitely enjoying). After recently completing an 8,000km trip on the CB I would say that, truthfully, the Tenere’s power would have been useful (long North American highways systems). But I didn’t get the bike with highway use in mind, a deciding factor for me was, (ego aside) if I am ever lucky enough to follow my dream of extended inter-continental travel, which would be the bike I think would take me everywhere I want to go with the least amount of hassle. The CB500 has been around for quite a while and is present in most markets worldwide. That’s why I picked the CB, and I think my reasoning was sound; I completely understand why someone else with similar considerations would pick the Tenere! Ask me in another 20,000km how I feel lol

Thanks man. They both seem like great bikes, truthfully the Tenere probably provides more bang for buck than the CB with rally raid additions, and for a lot of people would be the more financially sound option. For my own reasons, some of which I elaborated on above, I still think the CB was the right choice for me. Either way enjoy whatever you pick! If you have any questions on the CB I’m happy to answer them. Cheers!

@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845
@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 3 года назад
It IS a bit heavy off-road, but any lighter and you would start to sacrifice power for on-road performance. There are times I wish it had more power, but that usually equals more weight/fuel consumption/price. I can do any legal speed limit comfortably; I find this bike a great COMPROMISE to get the best performance both on and off-road. I gave the Tiger a look, but at twice the price, 30lbs heavier and a lack of parts availability if I crash/break down somewhere far from North America or Europe I found the CB a better fit for me (the slightly smaller dimensions also help me man-handle the bike off-road). On the other hand if I had chosen the Tiger I could probably justify that choice also lol

The audio is one of the things I really need to figure out/improve; I think it is less the audio fluctuating and more a) the mic picking up the wind and b) the wind reduction software bringing it in and out messing with the levels. This whole making videos as an amateur isn’t quite as easy as I thought! Lol

That isn't real engine protection...at all....let alone crash bars. That is more like a tubular bash plate. I thought you we looking to off road that thing? I seriously doubt you are doing much off-roading if those are your mods. Kind of seems like you just took random advice from commenters on social media while disregarding the important stuff.

Hahaha, I’m assuming this is a troll comment, but in case you were dumb enough to mean that earnestly I will bite. The engine guard is to protect the front oil filter and bottom of the stress bearing motor, I wasn’t trying to create an impenetrable force field… when was the last time you saw a dirt-bike with full on side crash bars? Also, this isn’t a dirt bike, it is an ADV bike meant for all terrain. Maybe check out some of my other videos where I do off-roading and have several crashes that the guard took the brunt of. Lol. Keep up the good work of attempting to spread negativity on the internet, instead of opening up constructive and intelligent dialogue 👍🏻

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 eVeRy CoMmEnT i DoN't LiKe Iz TrOlL cOmMeNt AnD nEgAtIvIty! That isn't a dirt bike, first off, like you said yourself. So bringing up dirt bikes makes no sense whatsoever in this context. Second, I see full on crash bar setups every day on bikes people actually ride off road including on my own Africa Twin. Yeah, I saw your "off-roading"....on the groomed gravel and dirt roads. Real adventure there. Also glad you survived that 1km/h tip over in a puddle that you could have easily avoided....You couldn't even pick that light bike back up on your own. But hey, that engine guard really worked though! It handled all 1km/h of impact force with ease! But hey at least we agree that you don't really need crash bars. I mean, it isn't like you are doing much actual off-roading.

@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 2 года назад
Wow, you are just a very angry person, it must be hard having that much negativity spilling out of you everyday. I feel bad for you. Yes, on my first off-roading attempt I dropped the bike going slow in water, I clearly picked it right up by myself without any break in filming, so I’m not sure what you are referring to about not being able to pick it up?? Also, maybe watch my East part 2 video where I drop it going slightly faster while crossing the Newfoundland T’railway, i did not however catch on video the crash going about 40-50kph, which the bike handled relatively well, but bent handlebars and broke rear brake (that crash bars would not have helped). Again, you are just slinging inaccurate and pointless comments, and unless I am missing something the entire reason for your comments is to show how stupid I am and how smart and cool you are? Unless you have something worth discussing I am not going to respond and engage you further in your clear need for conflict.

@@kenshapperttravelstheworld8845 Cool projection. Doesn't work on most adults though. So I'm not going to let you turn this around. You came after me, remember? "I’m assuming this is a troll comment, but in case you were dumb enough to mean that..." My initial comment was right. You don't do much actual off-roading and your "engine guard" is basically just a tube bash plate. Your claimed goal is to "make it more adventure/off-road capable" yet you don't even have the most essential and basic mod of all - crash bars. And me pointing that out has upset you greatly because you know I'm right. What exactly are trying to accomplish by personally insulting me with every reply instead of simply addressing the content of my posts?
