This is Part 1 of my trip heading to Nordkapp, Norway, on my Honda CB500X travelling from home in the UK to the port of Harwich to catch the overnight ferry to the Hook of Holland
The whole journey took me through the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and into Norway right the way up to Nordkapp, the furthest point you can travel by motorcycle or car in mainland Europe and then back through Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France over a 7 week period late May - mid July 2023
I am back in the UK now, but please do add your comments and I'll get back to you.
Hoping you can "Like" the video, as this does help the channel.
All my best wishes, thanks again for watching

I've just started watching motovlogs and bike reviews again after a hiatus from riding due to being at university. The CB500X has really caught my eye as a potential next bike, and considering I'm from Norway, this series is gonna be a perfect binge for me! I live down south, but my grandfather was from Finnmark and I know the Olderfjord village south of Nordkapp very well. It's impossible not to ride through it on the way, so maybe I'll spot some familiar sights in an upcoming video! Cheers!

Many thanks. I hope you enjoy the series and sights. The CB500X was perfect for my trip and the pace I wanted to travel at. There are many great bikes out there, but I'm still happy with my choice. Nick

Great content! Just wanted to ask a few questions regarding the bike. 1. How does this compare to the other Japanese bikes in this segment? Versys 650, Vstrom 650? 2. I heard that it does struggle to maintain a high enough speed on the freeway (70-80mph) in a rev range where the bike feels comfortable. Is this true? 3. Have you had any issues with the bike? I know maintenance won't be expensive because Japanese bikes are fairly reliable. Just on the nitpicking side of issues? Thanks! Love the content!
@bikingtravels
@bikingtravels Год назад
Hi, many thanks for the comment and questions. I'm afraid I've not ridden other bikes in the segment and bought this one based on reviews and my budget so I'm not going to be much help I'm afraid. I downsized from a CBF1000 to ensure I didn't speed through places and I wanted to to slow the pace down. This included avoiding major routes where possible but having a bike capable where necessary. Personally, I'm comfortable with the performance of the bike at legal speeds although there is some vibration in the foot pegs at 70 - 75 its not bad and yes, the engine buzzes more at those higher speeds than a larger capacity but meets my needs. I know there are some who have changed the gearing to enable less revs at higher speeds but as I mentioned, I'm happy enough with the overall performance. I'd caveat this... if the majority of my trips were on motorways / freeways etc I would look elsewhere - again just my personal perspective. Regarding maintenance and reliability, I'm please to say it has been ultra reliable, The bike is now 18 months old and I've only covered 27K Km so it is still quite "young", but is without complicated electrics so is simple and parts are shared with the other CB500s so should be easy to get hold of. I've needed to replace tyres, chain and sprockets and at the service in Estonia I needed to replace the rear brake pad. Otherwise all is well Hope I've given you something to answers your questions but I don't want to pretend I know more than I do Nick

Hi Darren, many thanks for the comment. I had an amazing trip, home now and missing the journey already. 20 days is doable, I met folk doing it in 14 days but I must admit that sounds really hard to me. I couldn't believe how far north it was, every time I checked how much further, the Kms just seemed to pile on!!! I'm sure you'll have a fantastic trip though and as you say, less meandering than mine, but if you can get to the west coast and fjords do include them! Nick

Ive just added a clothes peg to my kit, thanks to you! Have you considered switching your GoPro to 60fps mode? (60hz anti flicker setting.) The Nordkapp is on my B.L. for me, but it'll be a tad longer than my usual couple of weeks, so I'm truly looking forward to all the episodes. Intend to do Norway next year, be interested to know how much things cost as you go ( ferry etc)
@bikingtravels
@bikingtravels Год назад
Many thanks for the comment, pricing is tricky as I left the ferry booking from Harwich to Hook of Holland very late (3 days before), so recommend you take a look at the Stena line website, with all the options etc. I paid £270 one way with an inside cabin and breakfast, but much cheaper if you book in advance. Fuel was on par with the UK in the south of Norway but rocketed the further north I got. I also used ferries between the Lofoten Islands I think in total it was about £50 for 7 ferries (short hops typically). I'll try and include prices in the videos, but as I'm home now, only if I captured at the time. I think I'll see if I can pull together costings though from my credit card bill... need to see how that pans out. Watch this space, but... I hope you can do the trip next year, Norway is stunning but I came across beauty in just about every country I travelled through Nick

Hi Nick Got a question to you😮 How do you find the rear brake? as someone who has put the mikes in, I ask as I don’t think it’s fit for purpose, I’m tempted to change the pads, but as my bike is only 4 months old, I’m wondering if it will affect my warranty, Will be following you again
@bikingtravels
@bikingtravels Год назад
Many thanks for following, and the question. My rear pads were worn out at 25k KM, I didn't have any problems with them but surprised they wore so quickly. Applying front and rear work well for me so I've not really been aware of the rear brake, probably worth getting it checked under warranty if you're noticing issues, you may just be unlucky and it needs adjustment? Good luck with it Nick

Many thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, the chain and sprockets weren't in great shape and wouldn't have lasted the whole trip, so the thought of the logistics and cost of having to get them replaced somewhere most likely with much greater expense than my local known workshop made the decision quite easy for me. Hi Nick, The screen extender, heated grips and more road orientated tyres should have made a big difference on this trip. I started with an eBay cheapie, and after it fell apart replaced it immediately with a Puig one. Wouldn’t be without it now. I went with soft side bags, a sixty litre roll bag on the pillion seat and a Givi Trekker Outback aluminium top box. I found the Givi stuff, racks etc fit the bike perfectly and when I’m not touring the pannier bars clip off, although I leave the top box on because I find it so useful. Thanks for this vid. New viewer. Thinking of a solo trip to Norway next year on my bike so looking forward to more of these. One wish, that you had shown the tie down process on the ferry. I'm a bit dubious about how that works. Thanks for the upload.

Just joined here….really great, I like your gentle approach to things…one question, how is your bike kept from not falling over, straps etc and bike protection….it look a bit chaotic as to where you had to go to park up, I live in Jersey and look forward one day of taking my bike over to France, just wanted a bit of a heads up as to the mundane parking up and what the procedure is….safe riding and I look forward to your big adventure and will check out you previous one…..cheers Karl….my bike by the way a 2023 Honda NC750XDCT…

Many thanks and welcome aboard. On the ferry they provide straps, usually these go over the saddle with a cushion of sorts, strapped down to the yellow clamps or cables you can see on the floor. I tend to use the straps through my engine bars (details of the kit I use are in the description), you can see the bikes in front (around 8:49 straps). Sometimes the crew strap down other times it is up to you, just follow what the other bikers are doing. Enjoy your trip when it arrives! Nick

@@bikingtravels hi Nick, thanks very much for the info, I often wondered how bikes travelled on ferries….I hope in a few years time to take the short trip across to France….I am returning to riding after 42 years…yep long time, sadly when 19, a drunk driver ended my RD250LC, and almost me…but that was then, now just re started my riding and I love it, only one gripe with my bike, think the bike could do with a twin disc up front…apart from that, it’s just brilliant, looking forward to watching all your videos, thanks for sharing, safe riding and travels..cheers Karl

Really sorry to hear about your accident, sounds really nasty. I also had a long gap (25 years) returning in 2010. Just take it easy, roads are more crowded now and bikes and cars faster (don't mean to patronise). Great to hear your experience hasn't put you off. Enjoy the NC750 I've heard good things about it. @@bikingtravels glad you had a great time I’m really looking forward to seeing it, have you thought of doing a video on how you went about filming your trips, how you manage and store your footage etc, I’m sure that lots of us would be interested to see what is involved and how you manage. I have toyed with the idea, but... that of course adds to my current workload 😁. I did do things differently this trip from the one last year and need to see if it works out before I "broadcast" a method that I haven't proven yet. But... good suggestion Nick

Many thanks for the comment and observation. The gear I took was for comfort so yes, a bit bulkier than it could have been (3 person tent, self-inflating sleeping mat, collapsible chair), but apart from the emergency first aid kit, puncture repair kit, small tyre pump and tools (other than for chain adjustment) I used everything many times over the 7 weeks and was comfortable the whole way. So, yes, I agree with you I could have taken smaller and less but I traded that for comfort. In the end it all comes down to personal choice. Nick
