Thank you for sharing this history. As a Canadian who has lived abroad for 30 years, I was unaware of this legacy. It's lovely to see how the people of the area stepped up with such deep humanity.
Planes flying east across the Pacific also landed in western Canada. Not many know about this! However, Gander gets "all the shine" because more planes landed there than anywhere else and they descended on an area where few people lived. What the people of Gander and surrounding towns DID and the efficiency & caring with which they did it, is what got / still gets "all the shine"!
