This the CBS Sports intro and outro from The Giants-Jets game from December 18, 1988. In a game won by the Jets 27-21 costing the Giants the NFC East Division title and a playoff spot.
GREAT music. Even the graphics were awesome. If someone used those graphics today, nobody would say it looks too old. We need the music back. Even if just for one week.
it's 12 years later, but still, no, I think people would say that they're too old, we really don't need the music bad, sure for maybe one week, but CBS should stick with what's it's got
Pre game show was just an amazing thing because it really added to the anticipation for the game Today’s pre games I don’t even bother to watch or listen to I just wait for the game to start
+Jeff Kravitz The best "NFL on CBS" themes if you ask me were the "Pots & Pans" theme (1986-1989) and the Frankie Vinci theme from Super Bowl 26 (the one that they used for their last two years w/ the NFC package, 1992-1993).
"Pots and Pans" was designed for Pat Summerall but the play-by-play man had to engineer his own introduction for the game -- one set for the home team, one set for the visitors, and one set for the entire game.
Thanks, I never got the technicality of it until now. I remember inter conference games between would be every 3 years , then in 2002 it's every 4 years and home and home every time.
I was watching Eagles-Cowboys at the same time in what no one knew at the time would be the last-ever game Tom Landry would coach. The Eagles winning that game meant they were a wild card at worst and then after the Jets beat the Giants were NFC East Champions. The Giants were knocked out later that night when the 49ers laid down and died against a Rams team that got into the playoffs with a win in that game as the 49ers had already clinched the NFC West and wanted no part of the Giants.
@DNSKansas You are correct. I was there, and this is still one of the most bitter defeats in Giants history. They would have had an NFC East title, a bye, and at least one home game. Worse, all the usual villains kicked in, the Jets beat us, the Eagles won the East, and the 49ers totally laid down later that afternoon because the Giants had beaten them in the `85 and `86 playoffs, had them beat earlier this `88 season but for the fluke pass to Rice and were to beat them again in `90 playoffs.
@lmswentzeljr Correct. Also (response to ultraback's comment) the way the TV contracts work is that whichever network has AFC or NFC coverage would cover intra-conference games in which the team in the conference that network usually covers (today; CBS and FOX; then; NBC and CBS respectively) is the visitor.
For Eagle fans, skip to 1:45 for all the warm fuzzy memories of the Jets delivering our Birds a solid by knocking off Parsell's and giving us our 1st NFC division since 1980!!
This intro is the reason why today football openings suck. The old intros provided a backstory to the two teams playing to give the fans an idea what to expect. The new CBS NFL intro is so generic that it looks like it was made with no imagination. TV in the 21st century!!!! It's fantastic.......
That was a great day! The Jets knocked off Big Blue and out of the playoffs so the Eagles won their 1st division title in 7 years (the 1st I could remember). Even though the BIrds promptly legged an egg in the Fog Bowl in their next game before watching the Bears get trounced by the eventual champion 49ers.
As a Dallas Cowboys fan, I remember this game as well. I remember rooting for the Giants but they lost unfortunately. I also remeber my Cowboys stomping the Eagles duirng the mind 90's as Emmit had some of his best games against them. I also remember the fact that the eagels still have an empty trophy case....43 yrs and no superbowl...gotta love it!!!! LOL........Go Cowboys!!!
I remember the Eagles kicking Dallas ass to win the Division, and make the playoffs because the Giants lost , also kicking Dallas ass 3 years in a row because Buddy hated the Cowboys, and the Cowboys split most season with the Eagles when they were good , I remember the year the Cowboys won the Super Bowl they came in to Philly on a Monday Night and the Eagles kicked there ass so don’t act like Cowboys dominated us in that era , Also the Eagles D sack Aikman 11 times in Dallas in 91
@Jamare Rashaan McDonald Lol......yes, the Cowboys DID dominate the eagles in that era and had 3 superbowls in 4 yrs to show for it. I don't understand how anyone can even compare the eagles to the Cowboys.....75 yrs and only 1 superbowl to show for it.....sounds like a pretty shitty franchise to me. I also recall the Cowboys knocking the eagles out of the playoffs in 92, 94, amd 95. If that is not domination, I don't know what is, lol.
@@princedb71 your delusional as is all Cowgirls fans that 90s team was build to beat the Eagles, Jimmy Johnson said so , Every team beat the Eagles in the 70s so what , 2000s Eagles have owned your crappy franchise and all you have is 3 playoffs wins, and how many times have the Eagles ended your playoffs hopes at the End of the Season 44-6 2008
@Jamare Rashaan McDonald Lol.....I guess facts don't matter to a sheagles fan. You must still be butt-hurt over that ass whooping KC just put on your sorry ass team. Read this slowly......Dallas 5 Superbowls, sheagles 1 superbowl (in their 75 yrs of existence). Btw, it is" you're delusional", not "your delusional" . Take an English class and learn basic grammat if you are going to try to talk shit. 😆
@@princedb71 Damn you stupid, read this slowly I seen my team when a Super Bowl in my lifetime time jackass not holding on to championship I dint see in the 70s , 3 playoffs wins in two decades you team sucks ass , so take a class in this 🖕
Pretty ironic that in the following season, the Giants would cruise in to the playoffs with 12-4 record, and then win the Super Bowl the year after, and the Jets would inexplicably collapseto 4-12, lose their final game 37-0 at home, blow up their entire coaching staff, and spend the next several years rebuilding.
@B2B76 my whole point is both teams play in that stadium, I realize that when one team is the home team their fans season ticket holders will get that game. With the new stadium its a 50/50 spilt now, in Giants Stadium it was more Giants.
I've noticed that in 1988 the NFC EAST played the AFC CENTRAL in inter conference play, while the NY Giants played only two AFC teams the Jets and the Chiefs, can someone hopefully answer this. Thanks
the reason that happened is back then , there were 5 teams in each division and only 3 divisions in each conference, the top 4 teams had the schedule you mentioned, but the last place team from the previous season which the Giants were in 1987 would play twice against another 5th place division team in their conference which is why they played the Detroit Lions twice that year who were not in their division, same happened for 2 AFC TEAMS IN 5TH PLACE, then the worst last team in each conference would play each other twice because of the in balance of having 5 teams in each division
The Jets were the designated home team I know the Giants wore Blue, but the Jets in this era wore white when they were the home team, also some may not have noticed but the endzones said Jets
I remember this game all my friends were Giants fans and all I had was nothing too root for except eliminate the Giants from making the playoffs misery loves company lol
@Knightmessenger The Jets were the designated home team I know the Giants wore Blue, but the Jets in this era wore white when they were the home team, also some may not have noticed but the endzones said Jets. They have to designate somebody the home team even though like Lakers-Clippers it is a home game for both.

Dang I wish I could find this song to put in my mp4 player. Is there anyway I can find it? It is even better than the late 70's version of the nfl on cbs. Verne Lundquist huh. Good announcer.
anything in the superbowl era is modern since before their used to be NFL championships and no playoffs. BTW, The Jets will win a superbowl soon, I dont know about 100 years lol because right now they got themselves a nice team and a bright future with Rex Ryans defense, solid offense with Sanchez leading the way.
@ultraback29 If the Giants and Jets play in the same stadium, how exactly is it a home game if they play each other? (I know the logos are painted differently and the "home" team probably has more fans due to season ticket holders but still. Same thing with the Clippers and Lakers in the NBA.
@chrisuncleahmad The Giants would have had an 11-5 record and would have had a first round bye and would have played at least one game in the meadowlands, IF the 49ers still lose to the Rams later that same day. If 49ers decide to NOT lay down, and beat the Rams then the Eagles go to Minnesota for the wild Card and the Giants get a bye and play at either Chicago or San Fran depending on the outcome of the Wild Card.
If they both finished 10-6, Eagles would win on the tiebreaker. There's no way they can win the NFC East without going 11-5. They might have a shot at a wildcard with 10-6, but that year, the NFC was so strong that 10-6 didn't guarantee you the playoffs. I sure miss the days when the NFC was the feared conference.
@lmswentzeljr It's not a home game for both, unlike the Lakers and Clippers, both the Giants and Jets have fan bases big enough to fill up stadiums in their own right. When the Giants are "home," the stadium is full of Giants season ticket holders, and vice versa.
With an expanded NFL playoff field in the 1988 season the scenarios would be like this: Giants & Saints win+ Eagles loss= Giants win NFC east Saints are wild card Then Philadelphia must hope San Francisco beats the Rams later that night cause the Eagles have a tiebreaker over the Rams since beating them in November Eagles @ Minnesota plus Giants vs Saints next week in the meadowlands Rams are eliminated Giants loss + Eagles loss= Eagles win NFC east cause of tiebreaker Giants are wild card they meet next week at Veterans stadium then New Orleans hopes for a san Francisco win over the Rams
@njwhse I hate the Giants guts. It would be nice to see them play Week 17 again in the future with the same result the Jets knocking the Giants out of the playoffs.
@superman93994 interesting how you and other non-new yorkers don't seem to care about it yet you find it necessary to leave a negative comment. i guess you do care after all...
