@@shaneharrisnj3484 I meant the network had those terrible promos. When CBS lost the NFL to Fox, I figured it had to be because the league saw “I’m a biiiiiggg fan!” 15 times a week and thought they had to get the hell off that network.
And somebody on another channel said CBS lost its NFL deal because of those promos, thus having CBS go through a dark time for about 4 years. The NCAA On CBS and this theme song was GUARANTEED - _GUARANTEED_ to help CBS during this time. And what a fantastic time it was! Between NBA's deal with NBC and this? Good times...
So the Giants-Dolphins promo was for a week 14 game on December 5, 1993 won by the Big Blue 19-14. The UK/UL game was played a week earlier on November 27, Kentucky (no. 2) won 78-70. Florida State beat Tulane 94-63; a young Sam Cassell played for them two years before winning an NBA title with the Rockets.
Excuse my ignorance of the blackout rules: the team in my area, the Patriots, haven't had a game blacked out since '93...oddly enough the year CBS used these animations.
@SkeffingtonP The tournament games (Duke-Cal, FSU-Tulane) are def. '93. Obviously the UK-UL game must be another year. As I recall they debuted the music for the '93 NCAA - could be wrong.
He was born on May 17, 1959. As of my writing this comment, he's 61 years old. He was just 35 as of this broadcast. Bill Raftery is now 77, and he's Nantz's partner for many games. Billy Packer is now 81. Hubie Brown is 87, and he's still doing in-game analysis for ESPN. Nantz is a kid by comparison.
@bakerandbaker1 That had to have been a preseason game that didn't sell out, hence it was tape delayed. This is all patched together, but what a great promo.
@bakerandbaker1 There's been a women's tournament for a long time. If you want to get even more technical, it's the Division I championship... ESPNU or CBSC might show the D2 or D3 tournaments...
@TMC1982Part2 ...now that has changed. If you think the 2004 version is watered down, you are now going to hear something more watered down- they now have a less peppy version of their theme song. UGH!...
I wonder why they weren't more pecific then: ESPN's bottomline referred to it as the Men's Basketball Championship during the tournament this year. What about Giants-Dolphins at 10:00?
Especially basketball. Don't believe me, just search Charles Barkley on youtube. Some of the funniest pregame shit ever. I almost never want to watch pregame coverage of a sporting event, except if it's the NBA on TNT. Those guys make pregame coverage fun, interesting, and enjoyable. Barkley is as funny as hell; he's both smart and stupid at the same time and is always entertaining. Oh yeah, and their lead play by play commentator is Marv Albert! It doesn't get much better than that.
Giants-Dolphins at 10:00 PM? That's impossible. No CBS game starts that late, they only have rights to Sunday afternoon games, so even a west coast game would start at about 4:15; these are both east coast teams to boot. Was it on tape delay? Also: isn't the NCAA Tournament technically referred to as the Men's Basketball Championship? I've never heard it called the NCAA Basketball Championship. Did the Women have a Tournament? Someone enlighten me.
The Giants /Dolphins at 10:00 was probably just the highlights, not the ACTUAL game. And as far as your questions about the NCAA Tournament, the Women definitely had their own tournament at that time. I think it was just standard to refer to the men's championship as the NCAA Tournament. I'm guessing that's how people understood it. But maybe that would be a question better suited for CBS to answer.
@JUNIORWHOPPER, they're are still broadcasting the tourney! Turner Sports is just joining the party! This has been out for months now. Can you really call yourself college basketball fans if you don't know this stuff?
I agree with College Hoops, but actually the NBA is better on NBC than it is on CBS. Plus, NBC covered the toughest era in NBA, the 90s, were CBS covered a top-heavy NBA in the 80s.
