"CBS This Morning" made history by bringing news to the top of One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Hosts Charlie Rose, Norah O'Donnell and Gayle King join CBSN with more on how it all came together.
i was there last week, visiting from California, only my second trip to NY. Very emotional for me, 9/11 hit everyone where it hurts. My girlfriend and her two daughters and myself all LOVED the City. None of us wanted to leave. I'd move there tonight if i could. Powerful place, its the birthplace of our American Empire, and you feel the immensity and sense of freedom everywhere. It's hard to describe how it feels to be in Manhattan if you've never been there, we loved it so much we all decided to make it a Christmas tradition and go each year.
Rice Farmer Dress warm. I'm a New Yorker and it gets really cold here by November. Especially if your going to be walking a lot outside. Not much fun trying to sight -see in Ny when your freezing. Bring gloves just in case. Wear a heavy coat but something kind of light underneath as some of the buildings heat will be on full blast and you'll be sweating inside with too much stuff on. And obviously check the weather forecast before you get here.
I got engaged here, two weeks ago, looking over the Hudson. I was so excited, I got distracted and feel like I missed the spectacular views. It was the absolute highlight of my trip and I’ll definitely be back one day to properly take it all in.
+Anthony Garcia and the sound of the whoosh as it disappears from view in the elevator is just sad... I miss them. I miss how the world was before 9/11. *sigh* Life is hard no matter what time period or city, but it changed so many things.
I hate to say it; but, there is no way to bring back the original twin towers. Due to many reasons such as the building materials they built it out of (if you can recall, the original World Trade Center towers were built before asbestos was banned), the cost, and also; who would want to rebuild the WTCs on the site where 3,000+ people lost their lives?! It would probably end-up being extremely "haunted" (if it isn't already)! Unless if you can find or build a time machine, go back to September 11, 2001, and try to prevent the planes from colliding into the buildings while saving many people's lives; then you could still have the twin towers! However, that is highly unlikely to happen!
@@NathanDavisVideos Agreed. I'm in the minority but I like the One World Trade Center as it is, I preferred not to have them rebuild two towers. To me it just felt like "Oh the towers fell and many died...just build 2 new ones just like before"...to me it's like they would just do it to replace what was there before and I don't WANT them to "replace" what was. We can't replace the towers and more importantly, the people that died. What we CAN (and did) do is make something new in remembrance of what happened.
Just went up the other day, and I can attest, the view is magnificent. Seeing Manhattan like that, along with the rest of New York City, and New Jersey stretching toward the mainland, is a breathtaking view. I am very afraid of heights, but this one is different, it's very peaceful and beautiful at the top of the best city in the world. There truly is nowhere like New York.
I would love to visit that place but my heart would be pounding so hard that I probably wouldn't have the guts to walk up it. May those innocent people rest in peace.
This is amazing! I was blessed when I went to New York to study the harp. I live at the time between ave. C & D my first Job was in the twin towers tower one. I loved the restaurant at the top. The view from this one world trade center is a reminder of what I felt when I worked in the twin tower. I wasn't there when they was knocked down on 911 I was back in Los Angeles But this is truly Amazing!
Love one World Trade Center. I came here back in 2019 and I was just in awe of the building. Just stunning. The observatory was the best, the elevator ride up is definitely the highlight
The twin towers always will be better than this building, but i don't know if this building have futuristic looking or if these class of building exist before 2000
I think the Freedom Tower is beautiful, but unlike pretty much any other building on the planet, it has an intense history. I wish they could've been honest about what they were really feeling being there. I know they had memories of being in the twin towers, and probably knew people who worked there and I'm sure this was more emotional than they were letting on.
I will never have the chance to see the Twin Towers, for they're gone now. But I hope to visit the US one day, New York, in particular, to see Ground Zero, the museum, and this One World Trade Center building. 🤞🏼
I wish they could've at least built a second world trade center one tower without the antenna though. Something to at least remember and resemble the twin towers
ha, NYs middle finger… that‘s about the most sympathic name i could agree with for that tower. otherwise i feel so betrayed… i am obsessed with the twins, they normally would have been there for centuries, and now probably this will…
If there was enough room which obviously isn't, 2 47 story buildings, which was the height of tower 7 i believe, that look like the old trade centers, one on each side, that be perfect, the true NY middle finger🖕
80 miles as the crow flies from financial district Manhattan to Center City Philly seems about 30 miles too far, sadly. There is a picture out there of the top of Kingda Ka in Jackson NJ where faint outlines of NYC and Philly skylines are visible. Maybe if you have a telescope at night you can see light pollution from Philly.
@@prushimush As much as it would be a good spot it is not possible. I have been up OWO a few times on a really clear day with binoculars looking in that direction and it is not visible. The curvature of the earth makes it impossible. There is also people who say you can see Milwaukee from the Sears Tower in Chicago( which is nearer than Philly is to NYC? but again the curvature of the earth plays its part. There probably is places in-between, Jackson like you said where you can make both skylines out but its over 90miles from NYC to Philly. I'm just going off my experience thou but if somebody has good photographic evidence that would be great to see👍
@@prushimush I would wager in theory you could see Northeast Philadelphia with a pair of binoculars since that part of the city is closer than center city, but it would be impossible to distinguish it among anything else.
@jerky957 Yes i have been up both Sears and Hancock and Milwaukie can not be seen. Iv heard people say you can see the US Bank Center but what they have probably seen is the old Power Plant in Kenosha which is visible on a clear day. Because of its Chimney and towers it can be mistaken for a skyline but Milwaukie is about 30 mile over the horizon.
Wow, guys...the contractor was Tishman according to the building online profile. I had to go to Port Authority to answer questions years ago. They told me they were investigating a project while I was working at FCS. There was a chorus of children in the inauguration. My first chorus teacher was Sister Rosa from Campo Grande, MS in Brazil. It's kind of funny. Sometimes she took the chorus to sing at Sunday's mass in the local Globo channel.
2001: Twin Towers get attacked 2017: It's sad I didn't see the twins and now we just have one tower. EDIT 1 YEAR LATER: I cut like a half this comment since it was weird. Just got back on this video after a year
NORMAL??? This "normal" 'one' tower is a testament to true strength! Every redundancy imaginable has been built into it's fail-safe structure. Nothing, and I mean nothing will ever be able to take it down (unless virtually every other floor inside is wired with explosives)! I miss the twin towers of the WTC just as much as you do. It was a beautiful sight to behold but I hope that you folks give this amazing tower the respect that it deserves. This is all we have right now......
This is disgusting. I can't believe they would even try to show such a failure of technical engineering. How is the max resolution for this video only 720p for such an amazing spectacle, despicable.
+Mark Hilliard You mean in the foot prints of the original towers? I understand, and part of me wanted that too, but there are several reasons why that couldn't have happened, especially with the internal design of the original buildings. (for example, too few stairwells, that were surrounded by sheet rock and not concrete.)
Mark Hilliard I think, and this is just coming from my personal experience so I can't speak for anyone else, but aesthetically, the towers to me will always be associated with the tragedy first. When I see a picture of them, my first thought isn't of the fun I had playing in them as a kid in my friend's dad's office, or going on the observatory deck, the first thought I now and will always have is of that day. And not only is it painful personally for many, but in an economic sense, the building has to have tenants. And tenants don't want to think of the failure of the building while in the building. It's hard to explain this through text. Those images of that day and how those towers fell are so seared into our brains, that we have to have something new to look forward to, while also not forgetting the pain and loss. It's too haunting. I understand what you mean, and a part of me really wants the old buildings back, but I understand why they can't or shouldn't be. I think we all want the towers back and trade the freedom tower back for them in a heartbeat. Also, from a safety standpoint, it's unsafe. We learned a lot from how the towers sustained the initial attack and why they didn't stay up longer (concrete is king now, safety wise) . Lastly, there was not enough space for all the projects and another two towers. I understand how you feel and many people not just you and me feel similarly. I want not only the towers but what they represented to us then, but also now, a world before 9/11, before the two wars, and everything else that came with it.
+AmethystEyes I would imagine the people who already work at the new WTC buildings are constantly reminded of 9/11, but it didn't stop them from working there. Finding tenants wasn't easy, but they managed to do it somehow. Also, if the Twin Towers were to be rebuilt, they would be as safe as the Freedom Tower (1 WTC). Basically, the towers would look the same as before, but different materials and different escape routes for safety.
Aaron McGee It still is too strong a memory. They're reminded everyday, but it is like the difference between having one cup of coffee or 20 cups of coffee. The concentration of the reminder is a lot. I really really miss the buildings. I think we all want them back.
The One World Trade Center tower had surpassed the height of the Empire State Building in New York City and has the symbolic height the spire of 1,776 feet tall and 105 stories tall.
The One World Trade Tower is very stunning and it is a beautiful building and the Memorial is a pretty place in Lower Manhattan.WTC is a nice place to go. I am planning taking foreign languages for WTC for the world like countries like China and many of other foreign countries and also Brazil in South America for a Portuguese language to understand in cities like Rio de Janeiro of the Brazilian cultures.
You can NOT see Philadelphia from there. I have tried quite a few times looking in that direction. Philly is over 90miles away and even on a clear day the curvature of the earth would still make it impossible.
I wish I had gotten to know the twin towers, I was so young during 9/11. But the Freedom Tower is easily one of the most beautiful buildings I've ever seen.
This is so Sad, the tower looks great but why not 2 towers . I think 99% of the humans you would ask do you want 1 of 2 towers the 99% humans will say 2 towers. But this tower looks great, love it
A twin freedom tower would look horrendous trust me, 1wtc is a great stand alone scraper. If anyone wanted to build twin towers the designs should've totally different.
+Gemma Staley Yep that's 2WTC. There's quite a lot of arguments about the final design, there are two different options, but none of them is a twin 1WTC
Around the world Peoples dislike, because a lot of people miss least Twin-Towers and also most they miss someone got lost with love the families/friends 👫 very much ❤️.🙌
"So, basically, you have a 1,450-foot-tall building in Chicago and a 1,368-foot one in NYC." Sears is much taller than the NYC tower by even more than I thought
Why did they not put a way down the building such as some type of steps this time? If they would've had something to climb down on the other buildings a lot of them would have survived.
It be so cool though if you could, maybe you can see the top of the comcast center (tallest building in philly) on a super duper clear day but even thats doubtful
what is the building at 5:39??? looks old & run down. ....I couldnt Possibly go in this tower without literally feeling what the victims must have felt & seeing the view they saw & all this plus being paranoid anytime I see a plane no matter how far away.
Just because we can build buildings 100+ stories high should we? I’m sure the second anyone notices a plane coming there way they’re like looking for the stairs.
New York's middle finger to the terrorists? 😂😂😂 That's a good one! That tower is better off standing alone, others can stand at a distance and probably shorter than it!
Typically another incomplete job in nyc. The circular structure at the the very top of the building, the “communications ring” was supposed to be enclosed with glass. They never finished. Also the other new WTC building was supposed to have a angular roof. The point of the angle would point directly at ground zero. They, again pussied out. Too much money had already gone into the hands of the corrupt. So, like Shea Stadium back in the 60’s, jobs were left incomplete. The stench of ny corruption.
Just a cupple of bits from me ! I like the the idea of one world trade center Tower 1 as a Beacon or middle🖕finger as in " Up Yours " 👍 I miss the Twins a lot 😭 Who doesn't ! & Even Thinking about it is so so very hard . I'm not very sure of this new-ish Buildings Mast / Antenna / Thinking of Asthetix of it , I saw videos of the *Mast being brought up by crane " for the icing on the cake "cermony , & I think it looks Like it's done in a *Mosque style " Design ??? " it doesn't fit in with the rest of the Building , should of been more a Knod towards the original Mast from the Original WTC . Whos bright idea was it
What people thinking nowadays, not about airplane attacking the tower. I believe, tragedy will not happen again. But, They're afraid many people will questioning.. "Where is the curve of the earth..?" 🙏
