Susanne Lothar and Ulrich Mahe were married in 1997, the year "Funny Games" was released. Ulrich Mahe died in 2007, a year after "The Lives of Others" won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film. So, he didn't die soon after making "Funny Games", but "The Lives of Others. She died five years after him.

Wenn du das wirklich denkst, dann hast du den film nicht wirklich verstanden, aber mit sadistischen fantasien bist du schon auf der richtigen spur.

Von der Sache her liegst du gar nicht so falsch. Mit dem Unterschied, dass der Film nicht als Ablassventil für sadistische Fantasien der Schauspieler und des Regisseurs dient, sondern sich dies gerade zum Thema selbst macht. Es ist eine Reflektion ÜBER Gewaltaffinität des abgestumpften Publikums von Gewaltfilmen, welches in heutigen Zeiten (und da zählen wir mal 1997 bereits dazu) immer krassere und brutalere Darstellungen braucht, um befriedigt zu werden. Die in diesem Film dargestellte Gewalt besticht aber nicht durch ihre Exorbitanz (man sieht z.B. vergleichsweise wenig Blut), sondern gerade durch ihre Nacktheit und fehlende Überzeichnung. Sie könnte genauso gut im Alltag stattfinden und gerade das macht es (in jedem Fall in meinen Augen) so schockierend, weil dadurch die Distanz zwischen Film und Zuschauer in der Realität minimiert wird. Nicht zuletzt dadurch, dass der von Arno Frisch dargestellte Paul wiederholt den Zuschauer direkt anspricht, die entsprechende Grenze noch weiter verschwimmen lässt und damit offenbart, dass nicht die Familie, sondern der Zuschauer selbst willkürlich vorgeführt wird. Michael Hanekes Botschaft entspricht im Prinzip auch deiner geschilderten Haltung: Nackte Gewalt ohne tieferen Sinn ist nicht konsumierbar.

Nee, der Film und vor allem wie man mit ihm umgeht sagt mehr über die zuschauende Person aus als über die Menschen die den Film genau deswegen so machten wie er ist!
