Chequered Love is one of the most sublime 3 and a bit minutes of perfect pop, period. P.S. I was in love with her in the 80`s as was any other red-blooded male.

Yes, many of us were in love with her. And I do believe that cheqered love is better than Kids In America.

Hey Steve. Great video and topic this time. Just loved Kim. She was so pretty. I’m the UK today she is like a celebrity TV gardener and that’s kinda how she makes her living nowadays. I always likened Kim to Gary Numan in as much as they had massive start up success but then, in many respects, failed to recapture those heights (continuing to make great music though) but chopping and changing with sounds and looks and the like. Always seemingly trying to force those past successes to the front again but never achieving them again. No doubt great music though. Nice video and recollections there. All the best. Dave✅✅

I think we all had a crush on her back in the day. I know that people don’t like their female popstars to get older, but I still think she looks great.

All the best acts change their sound to progress. It's the pathetic garbage acts like Muckdonna, Bon Jovi and many that change nothing but rely on their comatose and mentally-challenged fanbase to buy every pointless thing they knock out. But you're wrong about Kim, she had massive success near the 80s end too, and managed to never miss the Top 75 in the UK, despite barely getting any singles off each album, whereas other acts got at least 4 or 5 off each. Music world is never a level playing field and people, DJs, labels and acts prioritise, and back then, especially with women, you were seen as has-beens after a year! Imagine that happening now, you'd be sued off the planet! Kim's career makes no sense when measured by the illogical mind and actions of a population. Sales should slide when you become weak and useless. She never has, and every 80s album that followed her debut, including a build-up of all the B-sides/non-album singles she did then, surpasses it in quality and artistry easily, as good as it was. She still worked through the 90s until things changed, she had sprogs, MCA locked away her '98 album, and she found other interests, plus it's not like a lousy music scene is begging her to come back, nor are they gonna sign up a woman the "wrong side of 35" no matter how good and superior over everything else. How is anyone normal supposed to achieve anything today, there IS no music scene, and it's all rigged crap anyway. You get money by doing live shows and Kim does many-it's just sadly always the same bloody setlist, but then she never DID like her own stuff, just other people's and that bloody song she stared with, plus a few others, the main 8 she always does. Her 80s shows, the few she did, were much better for music, but she did not like touring then and didn't enjoy it much. Now it's the other way around-she enjoys touring, but not the music side. We can tell! All her setlists are the same!

Definitely suprised that Kim didn't have more hits in the USA in the early 80's & only recaptured top of the charts with a cover. Met the family in Summer of 84 when they were recording Teases & Dares. Terrific people & had a fascinating knowledge of music & technology. Not suprised they let contemporary Producers / Mixers have a go at her material. Kim fan here 🙋‍♂️!

I have Teases & Dares on CD as well. And yeah, they definitely knew what they were doing. I have to check into Ricky Wilde and see if he issued any solo albums in the '80s or beyond. That family knows their POP!

Why would she? America doesn't understand anything more complicated than a power ballad, c/rap, daft disco, heavy metal or country, in fact they only bought the 1st single cos it had their own birthplace in the title and they figured it was simply saying how awesome it is to be "a kid in America"?! How is she supposed to have hits when radio refuses to play anything more, when you all know full well a non-yank has to be touring state to state for months before they'll take any notice? Plus they never get synth-rock, so naturally all the more complex follow-ups without that silly chorus of nothing were going to be ignored and RAK did nothing to continue promoting her over there. 'Cambodia-R' has no sung chorus section of words, and does not name-check America, so why would they listen. Again, if 2 of her best albums AREN'T States released even, HOW she supposed to get 'hits'? Why do people never do this shite with other acts? If radio won't play you, if you're stupid label release sod all off each album in few territories, what?!! Seems to me that overrated 'Kids' bore's the only one the label ever pushed into every country. Judging by this, it's lucky family Wilde achieved all they did at all! 'YKMHO' is so much more than a cover, they totally rebranded it, and it helps it sung by a much better singer and it doesn't sound unformed and slapdash. You're not wrong about family Wilde and so lucky to meet them when she was doing her final career-best album, they DO know so much about music. Pity so few of the audience do when it comes to their own music, aside from that overrated career beginner, a song that in actuality, stands alone as it is truthfully an actual disappointment with a failure of a chorus over everything else she did in the 80s, including ALL B-sides, and demos not even used! I also can't say enough for mixers having the sense to utilise barely known singles that should have been everywhere like 'Take Me Tonight' and 'House Of Salome' and extending them-awesome. Pity 'Bitter Is Better' was missed out on the extension part, not least when it was only her 2nd 12" single back then, though of course, it meant nothing, it was only a larger pressing, song wasn't longer!!

I was a huge Wilde fan for the RAK years! One of my top 2 or 3 headphones "first-listen" experiences ever was that Dream Sequence 12" before the album came out. I also agree that Select is the stronger album, overall, than the debut, which I adored. And I have to assume that one of my favorite singles, Child Come Away, is in there somewhere. So now that you've just skimmed the Wilde basics, may we (as Oliver would say) please have some more.

What is WRONG with you people, why are you so hung up on 'Kids In America'? "Select" and "Catch As Catch Can" are 2 of her career-best. Please, 'kids' is weird because, unlike all her other excellent very standout songs, 'kids' is a rather innocuous thing that borders on a party song that seems to die at the chorus-a very odd occurrence considering how hook-filled and intelligent and grabby they are-this song instead has a chorus that is more a mantra for idiot children to yell along to at a kid's party. As for edge, for God's sake, you think the debut has edge OVER "Catch As Catch Can". With an opener about the dangerous Salome who's mother requested the head of John The Baptist, featuring the best intro, verse, chorus and sax breakdown and explosive ending you'll ever hear in a pop and rock song, the funky non-chorused unconventional set-up of 'Back Street Joe', the otherworldly spooky soundscapes and epic storytelling of 'Dream Sequence'-another Kim tune miles away from any feted female's songs in any decade, the crushing funeral march and depression of 'Shoot To Disable', with the forlorn sadness of the 2 beautiful ballads on there, plus the closing song of a girl singer (possible former prostitute) never achieving her dreams, feted only to spin a fee numbers to the "drunks that haunt the bars" as he career highlight. THIS is an album no women has ever made before or since and she hadn't even hit 23! And you call this NOT edgy. Actually on release it was deemed to be more commercial with a crossover sound, but stupid America dropped the ball early-as I'm guessing they needed and expected to hear all of their states mentioned in any other song she did, and 'Cambodia's' somewhere you bomb as an American and infiltrate, you don't make a song about it! Plus with no obvious chorus section, you can see why they need to stick to their madoggas, Tina Turners and Diana Rosses. Let's keep it simple, we'll leave art to those who appreciate it. But I do applaud you for giving a damn about her in the 1st place beyond that 'Kids' song, but please, if it wasn't the instant and undeserved hit it was compared to everything she did that matters so so much more, would we even need to bring it up as the bar to which all others are measured. I admit, I don't need to measure it. Alongside 'Boys', 'Kids' remains the only underwhelming song she did in a decade she packed so full of excellent tunes-and that includes every B-side! No point in me measuring it against anything else she did 80s-it wouldn't have a hope. While I am the hugest fan of hers, her debut is the only album I don't 5star instantly, though it's still 9/10 and actually, the rest of the album stands out around it-for me it simply separates track 4 from track 6. Debut is great fun, but the New Wave sound is still present on her career-best albums, including her 4th (and first for MCA), it's just there's a much larger and more appealing synth-base, but also the depth and variety of the writing goes stratospheric, for 1982 the songs are like mini-movies, and "Select" has a body count! You don't get that from any other girl's 2nd album, and "Catch" is her most experimental album, with a huge leap in maturity in song-writing, phrasing and musical layering. There's brill sax in it too, and it's so so obvious it has far more beauty, catchy hooks, sophistication and memorable numbers than a beginner album, especially with a song as chorus-challenged as 'Kids'. But at least you admit "Select" is a better album, yet you don't say why. "Select" and "Catch" aren't just better than the very good 1st LP, they're 4x the album it is! And as for a timeless contemporary sound that lasts forever, few match Kim Wilde and her brother. The fact America ignored her says everything about their utter lack of understanding of what makes a proper record. She doesn't do bubblegum candyfloss, country nor God-awful power ballads, and has something to say and stories to tell, in a perfect singing voice that is not about yelling and screaming tunelessly for the sake of it, nor acting like a desperate attention-grabbing slut (ho Madonna! and the rest) just to shift units in lieu of a normal approach-make a record and expect it to be bought and played. America commits many crimes against good taste-well they gave us madonna hag. The fact they care nothing about Kim is simply-expected! Hell, they treated ABBA with disdain. Says it ALL!

Thank you for your response and I hope future viewers read it. However, if you want to make a video dissing us Americans and praising the virutues of Kim Wilde, I wholeheartedly encourage you to do so! I'm a fan of hers but you are obviously more well-versed in her music than I am. My video was meant to bring attention to the box, which is perfect for a casual fan. The 2CD versions of each of these albums released several years ago deserve a more in depth overview....

@@StephenSchnee Yes, I don't think I put enough emphasis on the praise you deserve for doing so actually, when you could be spending time talking about other artists who are less worthy but more well-known. Somehow you got to know her beyond that 'Kids' thing, which I praise you for, as the average American not likely to do that, never mind keep up the love decades later. Your video is a great one, and utterly necessary to pull attention to this box set, as these albums-especially "Select" and especially especially "Catch As Catch Can"-the diamond's platinum diamond-can't be praised and be promoted enough, I just wish it had come across that the latter is amazing, and considering it has more hooks and melody and sophistication in just one song over the rather ragged, student-rock sounds of the complete debut, I do think this should have come across more. Americans only make me mad because back then they gave no respite to non-native singers beyond one song if that-the fact 2 of these albums weren't even released in the US, which is unsurprising as the US label turned to other things-without a label back then, no release, is nothing short of criminal, and this should be mentioned here. No wonder no one's going to know of her bar 1 song if that's going to happen. MTV never gave her a chance either. The 3 MCA albums that followed, however, did get US releases when MCA put a bit more push into it, but when you have the like of whoredonna everywhere strangling the world, no one's going to take any notice of demure, sophisticated singers who simply get on with the work over self-promotion for a thankless 'product'. I guess it's easier for me than you, as with not being American, I have more access to her stuff, but this video of yours is giving 3 fine albums, plus a no. of bonus tracks another airing and I totally adore that.🤩

@@kyachdistent1301 Sadly, my channel is not as popular as it could be because I tend to talk about artists that don't get attention here in the US (or on RU-vid). But I love what I love and I'm not ashamed. Regardless of how people feel about a group like Bucks Fizz, I love their pure pop approach to music. I've done several videos on them as well as an interview with Cheryl Baker. 'Critics' are not supposed to like them, but I love 'em. I guess this makes me a fan more than a critic! This is not me patting myself on the back - this is just me being honest. I talk about what I love and hope that folks find my videos and either enjoy them or not. @@StephenSchnee That's disheartening, for the very reasons you have it here should be more than enough to get people watching. I think it's so important to support what you do, your taste seems very Brit or European to me. With America, it's either all Muckdonna, Michael Jackson, George Michael, Bon Jovi, country and all the rap and garbage of today, which of course comes from all countries now as no one has any standards anywhere. I've never had time for critics. My music collection is largely based on brill acts who critics never bothered favouring beyond when it was 'in' to like them for 5secs, and then turned against them as you do when you're a pointless idiots. Critics almost always favour the ordinary, overrated bores or just plain trash. My fave acts is Kim first, then it's ABBA, Duran Duran, Bangles and Sandra to complete the top 5 jointly, then Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, A-ha, Alphaville, A-ha, Sparks and Stevie Nicks jointly to complete top 10, then under them it's a mix of mainly 80s acts as that was the best decade for the best music, I don't collect many people's albums in comparison to others as I find it too difficult for most to pull it out of the hat like my Top 10 do, but there's still some-anyway in the house is China Crisis, Crowded House, Big Country, Fleetwood Mac, Roxette, Sheena Easton, A Flock Of Seagulls, Shakespears Sister, Blancmange, Maggie Reilly, Propaganda, Real Life, Go-Betweens, Gemini (ABBA spin-off duo), Pat Benatar, Voice Of The Beehive, Cock Robin, Natasha England, Ace Of Base, Talk Talk, 'Til Tuesday, Belinda Carlisle, T'Pau, Kate Bush, Blondie, Agnetha and Frida off ABBA solo, with the odd few acts from the long dead music scene of the past 24yrs that have managed to be worthy-mainly Keane, The Pierces, Ladyhawke, Blondfire, Hurts, Dido. I actually think it's far better to be a fan than a critic-not least if you're a fan of the great but hugely underrated which is exactly what Kim and her brother is. I'm glad Cherry Pop finally gave "Select" and "Catch" the deluxe treatment they deserve-not least when 'Sail On', 'Rain On' and 'He Will Be There' were stuck in limbo since they were mad till then, but also, not just improved sound quality, but the 1st CDs issued of her debut and "Select" certainly in the 90s, if not the 80s, just abridged the songs, and then the 1st cherry pop masters did the same thing-even worse. So every song that faded lost even more seconds then 1st 'time' around-and these are all songs that aren't even long anyway. Generally all songs that stopped were fine, but now of course, they lose a few secs, while all the fading ones go right to their exact end. That took 40yrs to happen, that is not good. But RAK are more willing to explore what she had for them (more than they bothered with at the 'time') but it's her MCA albums suffering now. Her final 3 80s albums need better editions than they had, and thee final two are supposed to have had a no. of demos made for them still not out. However her 1st 3 90s albums are to be released in expanded edition sets on 27 September, which fans have been awaiting for ages, so you could review them, and her 8th album offers a new track never out before so that's exciting. It was recorded after the album, but that issue collects the tracks she made after to promote her 1st international compilation. Her locked away 1998 completed album "The Promise" is still sadly not out, but she mentioned it 3yrs ago again, and some think it's possible it may come out in our lifetime but no one knows when or how it'd be issued. Once more, keep up with your channel, it's great, anyone US that features Kim reissues to the world is to watch!😉

I bought this as well Steve!! Kim's debut was the second album I ever bought with my own money and I was obsessed with her, thought she was the coolest and I still love the album now. Her younger brother Ricky was certainly a talented guy and knew how to produce her. The RAK recordings are definitely her best years before she did all that Hi-NRG stuff that I never liked (apart from You Came which is pretty good). This box set looks and sounds great, they did a fine job with it. Cheers!
