CDC: Tips From Former Smokers - Nathan M.: “I never smoked a day in my life!”

Nathan was Lakota, a member of the Oglala Sioux tribe, and never smoked. However, he worked in a facility where smoking was allowed, and experienced health problems as a result. In this video from CDC's Tips From Former Smokers campaign, Nathan describes his health problems-including asthma-triggered by exposure to secondhand smoke. He had to give up many activities he loved, including tribal dancing, because of damage to his lungs. That damage led to his early death at age 54.

At a young age. I learned what secondhand smoke did. I asked my parents (both smokers) to not smoke around me. their answer? "you dont tell us what to do" if you have kids and smoke. please dont do it around them.

Runeboyz7, feel VERY LUCKY that you weren't raised by "spare-the-rod-spoil-the-child" type parents! For if you had been, then not only would they have said, "You don't tell us what to do!"; they could have also ordered you to go outside and cut a switch from a tree (such as a willow tree or a peach tree), and then they BOTH would have used that switch to THRASH you (ie. spank you)! A switch is a long, thin, and flexible tree branch that's used for spankings. It's quite similar to a rattan cane; but unlike a rattan cane, a switch dries up over time, and so it loses its flexibility.

I met Nathan Moose when I was in New York to make my commercial he was a wonderful person. He breathed other peoples smoke for 8 hours every day until it killed him. He was younger than I am and I am close to death now with 66% of my lungs gone and with a spot on my lungs that might be cancer. I am still traveling around Alaska and speaking in as many schools as I can. With my last breath I will be begging for the young and old alike to stop be cause suffocating to death slowly is extremely hard and terrifying!

My breath is becoming shorter and shorter and some day soon my breath will give out. Until then I will continue to travel and speak in the schools to my last breath!

We were walking the same path with the same goal in mind and that is to save as many lives as we could before our time was up. I have a great deal of respect for Nathan and I know he did for me as well!

+Michael Patterson My uncles both smoked and my mother smoked, and I was close to them so I sat in the den with them while they'd smoke. I ended up getting bronchitis as a child from exposure to secondhand smoke. My mom ended up quitting later on because she was forced to by a doctor. My uncles smoked up until they died.

Taylor and many, very many people have Alpha 1...inherited emphysema....even you could have it Taylor....the air is polluted...only 15% of smokers get....COPD...where do you think the other 85% comes from....be careful....

I never smoke. Everyone smoked around me. There's even pictures of me with family and friends who smoked. I was recently diagnosed with COPD...thanks a lot everyone! 😡

This frightens me. I grew up around smokers, and developed asthma at around age 12/13. Cigarette smoke is my key trigger, so I keep a strictly smoke-free household; I even have difficulty being around smoke outdoors. I'm 31 now, and my lung functioning is decreasing. I don't know if it's related to my fibromyalgia, or from all that secondhand smoke.

John Hall he could also get a spirometry, and or a complete PFT in a plexi box, CT scan, 6 minute walk test and a arterial blood gas thru his personal PCP....yes, they do those too, many smaller cities and towns do not have pulmonologists a good internist is fine....unless you need a lung reduction surgery, lung transplant or the new valves....but your PCP...can arrange for you to have top notch care for those, too....

I agree I'm 24 now and I was born with asthma never really had any problems with it and then I had to go live with my grandmother who was a heavy smoker. I would stay with colds, pneumonia, bronchitis in and out of the hospital and because of her now I have lung damage like him too and my chest always hurts. I just pray I dont die young

When Nathan started work in an environment that allowed smoking, he was physically fit. He ran and was a referee for high school boys and girls basketball games. He used to competition dance at Pow Wow's in the Traditional category and was taking first and second place, he can no longer dance. He was on no medication at all, now he takes over 23 pills per day for all the illnesses he now has. It is not an image that the CDC is trying to promote, these are real life people

Great video, but the CG that appears at :30 says he is 55 years-old, while the video information claims he passed away at age 54. Hope this helps correct a minor mistake.

It is one thing to get sick of smoking when you smoke, then atleast you did it to yourself. This case is even more sad because he didn't do nothing.

i am a thin 68 year woman with moderate copd after many hospitolizations for pnuemonia as a grade schooler before i smoked/a family of smokers /later as a smoker also /smoking made me feel my lungs better/very sick/i even still wanted to smoke /now i cannot/ i would pass out/ the rub is /i am still hooked on nicotine/ now it is the gum. .. .

My uncle was not always that heavy. He was a very active ex-marine and police officer. He exercised and kept busy running up and down courts / fields refereed high school sports... he gained weight BECAUSE he could no longer breathe to do the things he loved to do... it's kinda hard to get all the facts in a two minute ad.
