What is class A used for?

Frosty Locks bigger/heavier vehicles, usually tractor-trailers and tankers.

Mallory Montenegro I just assumed Texas does it differently than VA. I was wondering that when I watched it. Do you have to talk about the ABS light? Also we have to do a lamp check. (Outside lights). Your buses don’t have a cross over gate. It’s interesting to see the difference between States. DMV in Va will not let us put tutorials on You Tube. Other than that I thought you did a great job.

Jennifer Martin thank you! I don’t think our buses have an ABS light to check...? And our district doesn’t have the gates in front, some districts in this area do but it’s not required.

Does anyone have the script they go based on when they're fixing to test you, because they did the same to me, they made me check all of the passenger side then the bottom, then they jumped to the inside to do the in cab, took me out to do a overall light check up and I went ahead and did the front of the bus while I was at it then the driver side, then the rear..., then they told me to do my safe star including my air brake test.., and you never guess while I didn't pass. ,and that's cause I called everything out when it came to my dashboard called out and pointed out all my gages, they didnt like the fact that when I said I would make sure they are all also functioning properly they said to be more specific , so they failed me because of that

Exactly, same problem here in Florida! It's funny because the same line she says over & over, I would not even know if there was a missing part!

Right?! Becomes a little sweat box. I'm just learning to be a driver now, and there is so much to remember! On top of also being the first to go through my garage with the new requirements. It's a little nerve wracking.

I’m glad I got my CDL before the new requirement as well. But, I had to learn it anyway in order to train people. I said the same thing when they changed it-all the schools are already hurting for drivers as it is. Now it’s even more difficult. The whole thing is way too excessive but what can you do? We’re just trying to roll with the punches.

George Caldes oh and by the way, we only just recently started getting air conditioned buses about 8 years ago. Before that it was pretty dang miserable-Texas heat is no joke, let me tell ya! Especially when we start school in August!

That’s wild! It’s already difficult enough learning the names of all the parts! Where do you live? We haven’t run into that in our area in Texas, hopefully they won’t start doing the same. I’ll keep that in mind for future videos.

Those questions are NOT part of the test. Anything along those lines that the examiner asks is simply to rattle you. If its not in the book, it's not on the test. Remember that. Its not exactly just to be a dick (although I'm sure being a masochist is a prerequisite to being a DMV examiner lol), its to ensure that you can keep your train of thought in spite of the distraction and continue the inspection without forgetting anything. Bus drivers - especially school bus drivers - are held to higher standards than other CDL drivers due to the irreplaceable nature of our cargo. Just say "I'm not sure how it works" and move on. You can't be penalized.

I've run into that issue three times now in Florida with inspectors asking for stuff that isn't on the exam. Our other issue is that many of these inspectors are straight up assholes that don't want to pass anyone but complain at the same time that they have to drive kids every morning because we're critically short drivers. An example would be having to say the following about the front crossing mirror: "I will check to ensure the glass mirror is not cracked, broken, distorted, or have any hazing, and that it is clean. The mirror needs to be properly adjusted and properly affixed to its mount with all hardware and free of rust. The mirror's mount must not be bent, cracked, broken, or damaged, and must be properly mounted to the bus with all of its hardware and must be free of rust." And God forbid you say you'll check the other mirror the same as the first one. If you don't say all that verbiage for both you get dinged. You can't just say that you're looking for damage. You have to say cracked, bent, broken, rusted, pitted, frayed, etc... Its ridiculous.

When you take your CDL test, the light check is before the pretrip inspection demonstrated in this video. The examiner will walk around the vehicle, while you are in the driver's seat, and gesture to you to turn on each of the lights. You will then shut off the vehicle and begin your inspection. On the other hand, when you are on the job, the lights is something you will need to check daily on your own. But the purpose of this video is all about passing your test. Hope this helps.

I’m ready for my road test but if I did my pre trip the way she did I would’ve failed myself the heck with the examiner failing me Among the things she forgot were what’s gear driven under the hood nothing about the hoses As far as tires go she said nothing about the front tires being original no recaps no regrooves

There is a chance that you will not have to do the portion "under the hood" for the test, but you won't know until right before you start. So it's important to learn everything beforehand. If you take the test and miss just a couple things, you can still pass, they just deduct points from your total score. I hope that answers your question. Best wishes :)

That is funny! I'm taking my state test in 3 weeks. Yes it is a lot to learn but it's good to know your Bus 🚌 inside and out. It makes you a better and more thorough driver.

Mallory McGuire it is overkill. There isn’t any school here that actually requires drivers to inspect all these things. But this is what the state requires to pass the CDL test.

Hi Carol! I completely understand your reservations about getting a CDL, it's crazy how much of the mechanical stuff you have to learn. To answer your question, no, the majority of schools and bus companies don't require you to do this whole inspection every day or even at all. Most of the time there is a mechanic or team of mechanics who check the buses under the hood regularly. This video is just what you have to do for the test. It may seem overwhelming, but you would be surprised how easy it becomes with practice. In the summers, sometimes there is summer school that you can drive for, otherwise you have summers off! Some schools will divide your pay and spread it out through the year so that you still get paid through the summer. To maintain your license, it costs $96 for 8 years, or about $12 per year in Texas. It may be different in other states.

Yeah I don’t think it’s worth it getting the CDL and realizing you don’t want to drive a school bus.

Robert Knight I hadn’t thought about it. Probably in the northern states they’re more strict about it. Each state has their own rules and guidelines.

also shouldn't the pressure for the spring brakes to pop out be 20psi to 45psi. What about checking the functionality of all the outside lights

You have to check the same items on each axle, but when you go to the other side you do not have to recheck identical items. You would just mention “ I would check the wheels, brake system, and suspension system the same as I did on the previous side.” If you are doing the entire bus you would check those things twice, once on the front axle and once on the rear axle.

Here in TX we do the light check before the pretrip inspection. The examiner will talk to the driver and explain the hand signals, then step outside and prompt the test taker to turn on the headlights, blinkers, ambers, reds, hazards, etc. THEN they would proceed with the pretrip inspection.
