This is the Cedar Downs at Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH. It's a Racing Derby machine from the Church & Prior Co which was built in 1921 at the Euclid Beach Park near Cleveland, OH where it was called the Great American Racing Derby. It Remained there until the park closed in September of 1969 when Cedar Point bought it and it's been opperating in the same spot on the midway ever since. This is NOT a Carousel, nor is it a Merry Go Round. This ride was built to simulate a horse race. The horses to "jump" but only slightly. They do move back and fourth in their positions so each rider has a chance to take the lead in their group.
There are 64 jumping two seated horses in four rows and they were carved by the Williams Amusement Device Co. The ride platform is 93ft across which makes it the largest of the three remaining Derby Racers. The other two being at Playland in Rye, NY and Blackpool Pleasure Beach in England. The ride uses an Eccentric Drive which allows for the back and fourth movement of the horses. Thaks go to the National Carousel Association for the information on this Derby Racer.
