Cedar Log Being Milled on a Foley-Belsaw A-14 Circular Sawmill 2

The Foley-Belsaw A-14 sawmill is finally running well. The blade is a 48" inserted tooth blade we got at an auction. This mill originally came with only two headblocks, but a third was added from a parts carriage. The heavier dogs were also custom made to replace the original ones.
The tractor is an early 50's Oliver 88.

Very satisfying to watch! What is the RPM?
@21mph12
@21mph12 7 лет назад
Scott Campbell Thanks! The pile of lumber at the end is satisfying as well. At full throttle, the PTO is at 540 rpm, and we were running just below that. The blade arbor runs directly to the PTO, so that would be the rpm of the blade also.

Great setup. Love it. The only problem I have is safety of the PTO. A good friend of me was caught by an unprotected PTO and died. His brother found him wrapped around the axle hours later when he didn't show up for dinner. The tractor was still running. It's
@frugje

He was allways quite relaxed with safety; "Oh, well, I know what I am doing and am very careful". Not enough though..... It's easy to protect the shaft. Please do it!

Here's a tip. Stay away from the shaft while spinning. Drive shafts under vehicles aren't covered.

frugje Sorry for the loss of your friend. I was going to make some comment about common sense. Then I noticed the Sawyer step over the PTO shaft while it was still spinning. He's just lucky.
@21mph12
@21mph12 7 лет назад
Tim Green I just found your comment today, and even though I was the one who shot the video, I never noticed him do that. I was always focused on the lumber pile at the end. You're correct though, stepping over the spinning shaft is inexcusable, even if it's not actively powered. I'm surprised he did it. Having grown up on a farm, he has more than one PTO story to tell. As I say, safety is a personal choice. That was his choice, and I'm thankful nothing came of it.

Is this a Kentucky Red Ceder that has such aromatic pleasant smelling wood, it sure looks nice even unfinished. Do you sharpen your own saw.?
@21mph12
@21mph12 5 лет назад
Yes, it's red cedar, but it's in Missouri. Seems that there are a lot of states that like to put their name in front of "red cedar", including us. We do sharpen and swage our own saws with a file and a swaging tool. Not too hard with a little bit of practice. Thanks!

Excellent machine. Simple and sound. Pour some oil on the blade if it gets hot and wobbly, which it might when ripping optimal thickness. One pull gives inch thick? It looks that way. You can still get 48 inch diam. blades from www.nassjosawblades.se.
@21mph12
@21mph12 7 лет назад
Thanks! it really is pretty simple to run but a little tough to troubleshoot if it isn't working properly. One pull does indeed result in a rough thickness of 1 inch (~2.5 cm)

My daddy worked at the sawmill, down at the planer mill for an old man named Dixon. Old man Dixon was a very cruel fellow. Didn’t treat his employees well or pay them much of a wage. Didn’t pay my daddy too much of a wage. Just barely enough to get by, I reckon. I reckon he got by all right. But old man Dixon he had a boy name of Jesse Dixon. Jesse was more cruel than his daddy was. He used to make quite a bit of sport of me when I was down there at the schoolhouse.

I found one of these the other day for $2,500.00. Didn't get it because I know nothing about it. It cuts up to 14" I believe he said. Says everything is there and worked fine last time he used it. You got any ideal what's value of a 14" cut like this is worth in working order.
@diversifiedacreshomestead102
@diversifiedacreshomestead102 6 лет назад
Sorry it's a 12" not 14" and is that just determined by the blade, so as if I was to get a larger blade I could cut larger log
@21mph12
@21mph12 6 лет назад
It would depend on your area and whether it's worth it to you. That doesn't answer your question, but the only ones I've seen sold were in pieces or in non-working condition. I can't really give you an informed answer.

Once you cut a cedar tree how long does it have to lay before it can be milled
@21mph12
@21mph12 6 лет назад
On average, about a year per inch of thickness.
@21mph12
@21mph12 6 лет назад
Sorry, I misunderstood your question in my first response. The log can be run through the sawmill at any time. We like to do it sooner rather than later though. After it's milled into boards, that's when it needs a year per inch when air drying.
@bigcountry7401
@bigcountry7401 6 лет назад
Oh ok how much on average would it cost to get a cedar tree that size milled in boards that size
@21mph12
@21mph12 6 лет назад
I don't really know. This is just a hobby for us, but I'd suppose there is someone who'd be able to answer that. A brief internet search gave me answers all over the map. Best I could tell is that this log would be about $100-$150. Most everyone has a band saw mill nowadays, so the yield will be a couple of boards better than what we get. That's not a great answer, but it's the best I can do.

They're out there, but I wouldn't say that they're common. This one was from an old farm. Much of it was buried in the dirt, and the blade was unusable. Luckily, we found another blade at a farm auction. After some work on the rest of the mill, we got it running. It really was a lot of fun though.
@ibenripped
@ibenripped 5 лет назад
It appears that every four passes you lose a board to sawdust with that thick circular saw. Plus the loss every time you turn the log. Please correct me if I'm wrong!
@21mph12
@21mph12 4 года назад
I wouldn't say you're wrong at all. The yield from a band saw mill is definitely higher, but this is the mill we have, and we're making lumber we didn't have before. Thanks for watching!
@ibenripped
@ibenripped 4 года назад
The lost lumber could pay for a new bandsaw mill over a period of time payments, then you would own it free and clear. Add the depreciation and sales tax write off and it may be a win win.
