People keep comparing this to a hurricane, and say that hurricanes last for hours while this only lasted for 30 minutes. I'll tell you that the biggest difference that actually makes this scarier and worse than a hurricane is that we only had minutes to prepare for it. No time to board up windows and secure belongs. No time to cut down trees and weak branches that might come crashing through our house. No time to decide whether it's be safe enough to stay or if we should stay with our family up north for a bit. No time to make sure we have enough fuel and food to last weeks without power, water, and gas. With a hurricane, you at least get up to a week or more to prepare. We only had minutes.

Zachary that is so horrible I live in North Carolina and we get true hurricanes but you are right we get time to plan. A storm like y'all had would be too scary for words. I saw pictures of the devastation pretty unreal. Hope you and your family made out ok

Why did you only have minutes to prepare? Warning system failed? I ask because it originated in the South Dakota-Nebraska border area and I knew it was coming here in Nebraska, so you all should have known it was coming, giving you were more that 200 miles from it's starting point.
@jijipoid

@@danr4316 Partial failure i am sure.. Only half the city got warnings via sirens and emergency phone alerts seemed too be pretty hit n miss.. Most people I talked to had no warning. Though I noticed a few people on the south end SE and SW I talked to did get notifs. I live on the north west side of Cedar Rapids and we had no idea. I just went to walk up the stairs to use the bathroom and thought it sounded like someone was taking a shower and was getting worried about having to wait. When i got to the main floor I noticed it was raining kinda hard and the lights flickered.. and when i went towards the bathroom power died.. My sis and I watched the storm through the front door. We never got any kind of alert the entire time even while it was happening.. No phone alerts which is typical for us to get in our area, no sirens, maybe fm radio (we don't have a radio anymore) but i doubt that cause my bro who is fedex ground delivery said he got nothing too and he was out there drivin his truck when this happened and a tree went through his window (he's fine thankfully all be it a couple cuts) .. I think for most of the city this was a surprise attack from nature. I think my other brother was saying while they did get alerts (they live on the south side) it didn't say anything about 140mph winds. it was like around 40-60mph winds.. So even the ones that were alerted.. it was very much underestimated, and he said that they only had like a 13 min warning.

THREE RADIOS TO CONSIDER FOR POWER OUTAGES/HURRICANES/EMERGENCIES.... SONY ICF-P26 -- This is a tiny $19.00 pocket sized radio with very good AM/FM reception that runs over 100 hours on two AA batteries. It`s 100% true analog and will last longer than a digital radio under most circumstances. Analog is much less likely to fail due to static discharge or EMP. The volume control can wear out quick on these little Sonys. Set the volume to a comfortable level and leave it and the radio will last for years. TECSUN R9012 --- This is another very small 100% true analog radio with excellent AM and shortwave reception. FM sucks on this one though but if you want a great little AM and shortwave radio for only $22.00 get this! This radio is famous for its value as a shortwave receiver! Runs over 100 hours on two AA batteries. This radio has been on the market for years and I know people who`ve owned this radio over seven years without problems SONY ICF-19 -- This is a digital DSP AM/FM radio but they did a good job on the circuitry. It only costs $29.00, is a bit bulky but not huge, runs over 400 hours off three D batteries!!! It has excellent loud sound and reception! The speakers on the small radios are good but somewhat tinny but all of these radios have a headphone jack and sound great with headphones or earbuds. Many don`t know but AM radio signals travel up to 1000 miles at night allowing you to get news and info from a large region.

I remember watching this storm creep in. I was playing video games and all of the sudden my power cut out. Looked outside and saw a huge black mass in the sky covering it so quickly- it was gut wrenching. Three and a half weeks without power in the summer heat was absolute hell.

People in Iowa have no idea how bad this was in areas, like Newton and Marshalltown, no one was warned of this. Des Moines had no damage in comparison to CR. And as one other commenter stated, we had no warning of this. My poor little town was devastated. People still have no power.
@HorribleSonofa

Emmi B - I’m in Des Moines, and we certainly had a lot of tree damage, but not nearly as bad as the Hwy 30 corridor. I thought my 55 hrs without power was frustrating. Then I had friends north who went 8 or 9 days without. I’m originally from Marshalltown, and was up there the day after the tornado in 2018. Kind of sickening. And then to have this. And instead of a half-mile wide path across town it was whole counties wide across half the state. UNREAL.

There’s still many of us without power. This was by far the worst natural disaster that has hit Cedar Rapids and the surrounding areas of Iowa. We are still trying to recover, the worst part was that the sirens only alerted us merely a few minutes before the winds kicked in. Some people were trapped in houses for days because of the trees blocking their exits, and they were without power. You’d have to drive 40 minutes to an hour to the nearest working gas station. A lot of colleagues of mine have either left the state or left to Waterloo or Des Moines for several days and still aren’t back yet. Luckily, things are slowly rebuilding.
@killroyhero
@killroyhero 4 года назад
It’s almost cruel to pair hurricane winds with absolutely no warning. All I heard beforehand was “it sounds like there’s going to be hail today” and “the power’s out, I guess I have to open the garage manually to get my car out of the coming hail.” Less than five minutes later winds pick up and I can’t see the neighbor’s house anymore. At least in a hurricane, you get a good few days notice to evacuate the area.

@killroyhero, my daughter and her family live smack dab in the path of this hellscape of Cedar Rapids! Her husband is on redeployment to "the Middle East"; {that alone makes for an angry grandma!} So, she hadn't left for work yet, yes, she is a Funeral Director/Mortician, so she just had enough time to put the boys and herself into an interior room with a blanket over their heads and flashlights and books! Her new 3 season porch ended up in a neighbors garage! Her deflated pool somehow ended up in a different neighbor's backyard, full of water! That's the one that perked my ears! I'm in SD and have been in blizzards with 80 m.p.h. winds, on the farm. We also lost our windmill once to what I have often believed was a derecho, they just didn't have a word for it then! Hoping you and yours are okay today! Peace!

I’ve delt with winds like that twice in south Louisiana. One recently when two hail storms back to back hit me, destroyed a tree in my backyard, a squall line which is the same as a derecho but shorter and less strong hit me, knocked down a basketball goal into the side of my dads car, winds were recorded around 60 mph, but our weather station picked up 39

Lasted for like 10 seconds and before it was slightly windy and raining hard, next thing I knew I heard what sounded like a lot of air moving through really fast, and stuff started getting damaged

Derecho hit upstate New York/northern PA, a decade ago. Widely reported. There was a smaller one in northern IL about that same time. Due to time of year, no crop damage but substantial damage to roofs, buildings, trees. This one, a bit unique due to duration and coverage swath.

Resembles the 18th fairway at CRCC. No more golf that afternoon! The course lost over 100 trees in a 1966 tornado. But power outages then were rather limited. Condolences to the many thousands who've lost power, homes, or even lives.
