Content warning: This footage may be disturbing, especially to survivors of Hurricane Dorian or other hurricanes or disasters. This video does not otherwise contain graphic footage (no injury or death).
"This has to be the most incredible footage ever captured of a category 5 hurricane" -Reed Timmer, Ph.D., / 1438529459464941572 . On September 1, 2019, Hurricane Dorian became the strongest landfalling Atlantic hurricane in the modern era, with 185 mph (295 kmh) winds and higher gusts in the Abaco Islands. Dorian's extreme winds, storm surge, and rain brought unimaginable devastation to tens of thousands of people in the northwestern Bahamas, where the communities of the Abacos and Grand Bahama are still trying to recover to this day.

- Additional information:
Filmed with GoPro HERO7 and iPhone XS at Abaco Beach Resort, Marsh Harbour. The GoPro footage was captured using a wide-angle lens which has been cropped to 16:9 resolution, causing the POV in some parts of the video to appear much closer to the winds than reality. The eyewall portion of the video was taken from inside a concrete stairwell facing generally perpendicular to the wind within a reasonably sturdy structure, which was an incredibly fortunate set of circumstances for continued recording. Always stay as far away as possible from ANY areas, such as the corridor in front of the stairwell used in the video, exposed to airborne debris.
The times at the bottom indicate only the start time of each sequence. The times shown are local: Atlantic Standard Time, equivalent to U.S. Eastern Daylight Time.
There is unfortunately some jittering in some parts of the aftermath section of the video, which may have been a result of combining GoPro and iPhone footage with different FPS and video resolution.

Hello everyone, My apologies for the lack of activity on this channel. I am currently finishing my graduate degree in meteorology, where my research is on the physics of the lower part of the hurricane eyewall. In particular, I have been studying small-scale "waves" that appear in some powerful storms including Dorian, which may help explain why or how some hurricanes intensify rapidly or reach such extreme wind speeds. Unfortunately, the workload in addition to some health issues meant that I have not been able to chase very often and provide more videos. I am very thankful for everyone who subscribed, but I wanted to mention that you should not expect regular uploads from me. I don't really consider myself a content creator so it would be difficult physically and emotionally to follow the weather media model currently popular in the community. How often I chase after I graduate will depend on what and where my new research position is, and those details are just too uncertain at this point. September 1, 2024 will mark the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Dorian's landfall in Abaco, and I may take that day to upload a new version of this video without a watermark (or at least a much less intrusive one) and maybe some more commentary. This video has basically all of the footage that I took, however, so there wouldn't be any new clips of the actual storm. I am thankful for all of the moving comments on this video sharing in the sheer power of nature, and I don't think it will be possible to keep them, so I'm not sure what I will do yet. I would also like to visit Abaco again and hopefully reconnect with people I met during Dorian and see how the island is doing. Wishing peace and safety to all in this New Year. -JY

After Andrew, I started subscribing to the idea that cyclones undergoing rapid intensification at the time of landfall translated more violence to the surface than would otherwise be expected, not to include its carousel mesovortices in the second half. Ian sort of disproved that. Even though it was almost immediately recategorized as a 5, I simply don't believe it. Even 155 was a stretch. But the violence you captured in this video is appalling. It's like there's a fourth wall where mature annular cyclones nearing the speed limit of the atmosphere *sink* like a bowl to say "hello" with their absolute worst. Best wishes and cheers to your health!

Reed Timmer is right. In my opinion this has to be the best hurricane footage/mini-documentary ever made. Big ups to the photographer for battling conditions that dangerous to shoot this film with a steady hand. And the fact that you let the images and the original sound speak for themselves with no attempts to add dramatizing music and that sorts is a big, big plus. Best wishes from a Danish weather enthusiast.

These tremendous gusts have been trigered by this scary pressure gradient Dorian had, without a doubt. This video is truly unique, a documentation without yelling, shaking camera or fast cuts using. The winds are easily the strongest ever recorded outside of a tornado. You can see the intensification steps at 8:50, 10:21 and 12:50, the two 220 mph gusts at 11:41 and 14:35. To bad there was no possibilty to film the second eyewall, but thank you for sharing this with us!

This is the most intense Hurricane footage on the internet, this is better than any of the footage captured during Haiyan or any other hurricane, only one I can think of that comes close are the Mexico Beach Hurricane Michael videos. I can’t even imagine what Haiyan, Patricia, and Tip looked like at their worst if this is anything to go off of. Most chasers at the hurricanes peak turn the cameras off and take shelter, but you were at an angle where you could keep filming the worst of it. @@anemojin4384 Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Goni! Yeah those videos are pretty intense too, but I still don’t think it’s as impressive as the ones captured here (even tho Goni was stronger ofc). The first two videos are definitely the most impressive, but it also seems more like there were just very intense white out conditions captured during the inner eyewall, rather than the people filming managing to catch the worst of it. (Cause again, most people take shelter during the worst part of a Cyclones landfall, this Dorian video was just a circumstance of the guy filming being extremely lucky at the angle he was at).

The wind inside of an EF4 and EF5 tornado are more powerful than this, partly because of updraft and the cylic nature of the wind. Way more intense and damaging then 140 mph sustained winds. There have been EF5 tornados that have ripped fire hydrants out of the ground, torn, gas pipelines out of the ground, and thrown 20,000 lb water/oil tanks a quarter mile.

These hurricanes and tornadoes are a lot more comparable than we previously realized, I think. It used to be taught that hurricane wind speeds "topped out" somewhere above 150mph, but tornadoes had wind speeds of 300mph. Now, if we compare the worst tornadoes to the worst hurricanes there may be some element of truth to the claim that tornadoes have higher wind speeds, but my understanding is that part of the reason for replacing the Fujita scale with the Enhanced Fujita scale was that structural engineers pointed out that the tornado damage that meteorologists had previously thought to be indicative of 300-mph winds could in fact be caused by winds of "only" 150 to 200 mph. tl;dr your EF-4 estimate was literally spot-on: Hurricane Dorian's sustained wind speed of 185 mph (according to Google) is equivalent to a mid-range EF-4 tornado, and the only differences were that Dorian was much larger and longer-lasting, and caused a storm surge.

@@philipmcniel4908 You're 1000% right that they've downgraded the windspeeds needed for different categories of tornado (EF0-EF5), but I think they're still very different from Hurricanes in terms of damage. Firstly, rotating and up-drafting tornadic winds produce much more structural damage than straight line winds of the same speed - that's why the cameraman here can stand on a sheltered balcony in 186mph hurricane winds, while tornadoes at that same wind speed will destroy brick homes. Secondly, you wouldn't know it from the EF scale, but there are big differences between low-end and high-end EF5 tornadoes. The EF Tornado scale is based on the damage a tornado does, and it estimates the wind speed ranges scientists believe must have caused this damage. The highest rating (EF5) is defined as "well-built houses completely destroyed and swept clean from their foundation," and the wind speed attached to this is "200mph or greater." There's no EF category for tornadoes 250+ mph or 300+ mph because there's no reliable way to measure damage greater than what is basically total destruction. But we know that tornadoes can get that fast! There are at least 2 on record with radar-measured wind speeds above 300 mph (Moore 1999 and El Reno 2013). At those speeds, we see things like train cars thrown hundreds of yards and plumbing pipes ripped out of the earth, and we never see that kind of phenomenal damage with hurricanes. This article (published after the massive 2011 tornado outbreak) explains the differences pretty well: miami.cbslocal.com/2011/04/28/hurricanes-no-comparison-to-tornadoes/

Amazing!!! I have rarely seen a wind video with so much violence, you took a risk, but the viewing is good it feels like in the storm! terrifying

I bet this was one of the most frightening, coolest and saddest moments of your life. I would have been scared to be so close and record the storm, props to you!

This footage is incredible. I come back every so often to watch it. Just amazing, the power nature withholds.
