Watching the final seconds of the video is awesome... the way the camera catches the light and shadow of the passing clouds. Notice the timing with where I am. Neat stuff.

In my experience here in Tennessee, the stumps of downed red pines have much better quality fatwood than the limbs. I worked on a golf course for years and i found some really killer fatwood sources. Many of them i left there but i did fill up a 2ft x 3ft x 2ft tote with fatwood.

Here in southeast indiana, the cedar dont really have any resin. They just die and rot. I've dug through many of them and never found anything like that. Also we dont have many pine around. Good video sir.

Always learn something Snake, didn’t know about Cedar, Pine certainly seemed to light quicker, Cedar burned longer, but looking at the vid again, the Cedar was giving off more black smoke than the pine suggesting it has more resin, could be why it burns longer, Love the vids, stay safe and well, 😃👍

I think, judging by this video, the Pine took the spark and ignited quicker but the Cedar seemed to burn longer/stronger. To sum it up - use both on top of a piece of Burch bark and you will not fail. Next test - lets see it in the rain. I know you kept all of those juicy rounds.

I subbed bc of your hat!...and bc I always thought cedar was less apt to have resin than pine...I wonder if cedar resin is as volatile as pine? I own a tree service in PA and never remember getting pitch on my hands cutting cedars, but we all know what pine will do to your hands...

I'd take either one. With our cold climate I think it doesnt allow it to flow so we dont get much fat wood. I find some but nothing to brag about. Great video snake. When I'm out in Tennessee in August I will be scouting for some for sure.

Dude, while you're in Tennessee, you should go check out Smoky Mountain Knife Works, in Sevierville, i love that place. They have a lot of cheap junk for the tourists, but they have a ton of killer stuff too. It's not only knives and axes, they have tons of guns too. AR15's handguns, they even have a Barret 50 cal lol. They had a huge box of magpul pmags for 9 bucks each. You should check it out before you leave. I'm going tomorrow to get a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, Tops Brakimo knife, and Leatherman Supertool 300 multi tool. Uncle Sam's stimulus money is upgrading my INCH bag for me lol.

I found the richest fatwood I have ever seen this past week. I got some to replenish my supply, but would love to get more. The wood is extremely opaque, smells like you are smelling turpentine out of the can, and burns like Hell. It is all in an old, still standing pine tree that is probably 30+ inches in diameter. I may have to sneak out there one day with my chain saw and get a large chunk for processing. I took video of it and may one day show that and some other interesting things I found while exploring the woods.

Shavings burn up too fast. I use a few splinters of it. It's usually easy enough to find no reason to be overly stingy with it and then need more tinder gathering.

I've never known cedar to have resin in it similar to pine. I live in NW CA. Regarding the inner cedar bark, what's the best way to remove it and turn it into a rats nest? Rubbing two chunks of bark together doesn't really work that well, but i also don't want to use my bare hands. We have a type pf oak here with a similar inner bark, but it is coarser in thickness and width, not like the hairy sixe of cedar. Been trying to find a way to separate it from the outer bark. It does pretty good as helpful fire starter in the wood stove. We also have juniper here with a strong punget smell.

Red pine I reckon. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@joeyjones9041
@joeyjones9041 4 года назад
Red pines are darker amd the bark is much thicker and gnarly looking. The red pine has 2 needles per group and the white pine has 5. White pines are more greyish is bark color and red pines are more brownish red. Hope that helps. Red pines produce better fatwood IMO.
