CEF50 E-MTB with Bafang M820 System - Initial Impressions

One of the lighter weight E-mtb models to grace the DIY frameset market. Shenzhen Zhaosheng's CEF50 Frameset equipped with the Bafang M820 system with 75NM of torque promises to bring the capabilities associated with premium/high quality performance but at a much more realistic & affordable price point.
With up-to-date geometry and in 4 frame sizes (Small, Medium, Large & X-large), will this DIY E-mtb become a new favourite within the DIY frameset marketspace in 2024?🤔
A full carbon frame with a 410wh battery (or 720wh if you're range conscious), this bike blurs the lines between an effective workout tool, trail ripping power hour machine & absolute hill climbing champion.
Keep a watchful eye on upcoming content, as 2024 maybe the 'year of the DIY E-mtb builder'👊🏿

Lol. You wouldn't be the first person to say that the CEF50 reminds them of a Trek 😄. I appreciate that some riders prefer 'absolute power' when considering ebike systems. So I'll make sure to balance all the different frameset options available in 2024👍🏿

This motor is not meant to be “full power”. It’s a light weight assistant motor. You can have a really nice EMTB that only weighs 20kgs.

My CEF50 with its current build cost me roughly £2900 (maybe a bit less, I'll need to relook over all my receipts). Difficult to say whether I prefer Dengfu or CEF. I'll share my experiences and opinions once I've built up the Dengfu E69 (which uses the same system). I guess you could remove the battery for seasonal storage. But I'm testing the M820 system in -2° temperature. So far, the battery and motor doesn't seem as troubled by the low temperature in terms of performance. The range has slightly decreased. But that's to be expected, given the cold weather I'm having👍🏿

@neekodevinchi 10 месяцев назад
Good question🤔 Truth be told, I would look at the E55 and CEF50 similar to a Levo and Levo SL. Both (in terms of geometry and travel) are capable in their own right. But would boil down to circumstances, instead of terrain. E.g. The CEF50 makes for a brilliant 'power hour' emtb, due to being light/nimble and having a sufficient battery capacity to keep you going for a afternoon or morning rio. Whereas the E55 is a great 'long distance Allmountain' emtb, due to its powerful motor and high capacity battery. So for me, both would be useful. It just depends on the circumstance👍🏿

I have a Trek Rail. I'm curiuos as to how you would compare this motor to a Bosch Full Fat emtb. ( I bever use Turbo - never needed ) so wondering if a lighter ebike like this would suit me better? ( I don't like the closed system with Bosch and would also like to be able to carry out motor maintenance myself)
@neekodevinchi
@neekodevinchi Месяц назад
Hi there, I've just swung a leg over my Whyte E150 which uses the Bosch Gen4. I'm not too sure which model of Trek Rail you own. Bit my Whyte E150 xl with fox 36 and float X weights near 26kg. The first difference I notice from coming off my CEF50, is how reliant I am on the Bosch Gen4 motor. I don't use Turbo Mode much. But I will gladly say that Tour+ & EMTB Mode are used very often. And I wouldn't want to ride my Whyte with no battery. Unlike my CEF50, where I'm not as reliant on the M820. But (if required) it can still pump out a surprising amount of power to climb technical terrain. I do find myself using the CEF50 as my primary trail emtb. But I am finding that my needs (especially a trail/Allmountain emtb) to be specific. Unlike an Enduro emtb, where I'd be more inclined to have as much power and travel. And would be willing to incur a weight penalty. Yes. Bafang motors (by reputation), are known and proven to be serviceable. And parts are available. But Bafang have invested in service centers. And you'll be hearing about this very soon. But to answer your question. If you like the Bosch Gen4 and want similar characteristics (motor over-run etc) with less weight, you have the Bosch SX or the Bafang M820. But as you say, Bafang isn't a closed system. So using third party batteries & displays is a noteworthy consideration. I have made a video comparing the CEF50 to the Specialized Levo, so feel free to give that a watch. Failing that, I hope the above has answered your question👍🏿

Hey Neeko, as you are a tall big guy, how do you setup the rear shock on the cef50? The ratio of the frame is very high at 3:1? Would you mind to state your weight and preasure to achive about 25% sag? Do you know anything about weight limitation? Cheers!
@neekodevinchi
@neekodevinchi 5 месяцев назад
With the Fox Float X rear shock, I'm running the 2nd from biggest volume spacer and 265psi. This gives me about 30% sag. The float X has a medium tune. It's been a while since I've weighted myself but I tend to set up my suspension fully kitted (wearing a backpack with spare tools and a tube etc). But I wouldn't classify myself as a light rider, as I'm fairly broad. The bike is supple at the beginning of it's stroke but ramps up within the mid stroke. So it's fairly supportive with minimal pedal-bob. The bike's is fairly progressive for a trail/Allmountain emtb. The weight of the bike allows it to pop off the ground fairly easily without to much speed. But the bike still feels calm and consistent when blasting down a steep rock garden. I haven't tried the CEF50 with a coil shock. But I'll definitely say that setup isn't difficult and can easily accommodate riders of different sizes and weights👍🏿

There are some uphills say 20% gradient which i can't do on my analog bike, and if I try my HR spikes to 185 - which isn't necessary good. I'd like to make it more effortless to climb it and use assist fr it. Not really a fan of full power e bikes as i want to get myself sweat and do all day long trips (100km+ on my MTB) which really does not require too much help from motor. Just somee help from time to time on ECO mode . My ideal E-bike for now would be lightwight model with M820 Bafank and 400Wh battery - 18kg would be good as this is my current FR machine I'm riding. Hi Neeko. Big fan. I've spoken with some sellers of the cef50 frame and bafang m820 motor and I think can get a frame motor battery charger headset axle display and cranks for less than $2500 inclusive shipping and tax. Before I pull the trigger and buy the frameset, I have a couple of questions. 1. you're using the official battery from Bafang but the seller only sells the 48v battery. Will this make the bike heavier and would I be able to check on the battery health using the display and app? 2. I know you open, service and repair bafang motors. have you found ways of making it less noisy? 3. how reliable is the motor? I don't mind repairing and servicing parts. But i'd rather not do this more than I need too. 4. I have seen other frames available which use the M820 motor but i can't find any reviews. Are these other frames better than the cef50? and 5. I know your cef50 weighs more than 44lbs. is is possible to build a medium with equivalent parts like yours, to weigh 44lbs or less? Thanks in advance Neeko👍🏻
@neekodevinchi
@neekodevinchi 5 месяцев назад
Hi there, Sincere apologies for the delay. In answer to your above questions:- 1. Using one of the 48v batteries will add weight. Depending on the capacity, the increased weight will vary. However, only the proprietary Bafang batteries have the built in BMS which will allow you to monitor the health of the battery via the display, app or BESST Tool. 2. I have seen others use Mobilith SHC grease for gears and have claimed to have got the motor more quiet. However, Bafang have recently announced a new grease which is universal for all motors which I'll be testing in due course. If this new grease makes the motor's quieter, I'll gladly spread the word. So keep a watchful eye. 3. Truth be told, I've not had any reason to crack open my M820 at this point. After 600miles, the motor still feels the same as the day I installed it. The same thing for the 410wh battery and the other components for the system. 4. I'm aware of other frames which use the M820 system. Some of these frames are a bit small for me. However, the frames which come in XL size will be featured on my channel. Again, keep a watchful eye. 5. It is possible to get the bike lighter (sub 20kg/44lbs). However, I suspect that most builders 'may' have to be selective in terms of components used. For me, I wanted a versatile trail/Allmountain emtb. Thus, the components used reflects the build. But my Fox36 emtb rhythm fork is slightly heavier than a regular Fox36/Rockshox Lyrik Ultimate. So you could make the bike lighter by carefully choosing components (in accordance with the build and application you want the CEF50 to fulfil). Once again, apologies for the delay but let me know if you have any further questions👍🏿

Myself and 3 of my friends took my Levo, Whyte E150 and Dengfu E08 (with Shimano EP801) out, so we could guage the performance of the Bafang M820. Whilst the Whyte with the Bosch Gen4 had the edge, the M820 could hold its own against the Brose motor. Granted a sustained climb, the Levo would have the edge, due to having a bigger battery. But short punchy climbs, they were comparable. The E08 seemed to lose out unfortunately. But rumour has it that Shimano will be releasing a new firmware update in January/February 2024, which will raise the maximum current (increase motor power). So I'm more than happy to revisit the performance aspect of the CEF50 with M820 next year👍🏿
