CeilingMax Surface Mount Ceiling Grid Installation 

The video was very good. The detailed description of the math used to make the grid work was excellent. Thank you. I really like the fact I got back the inches I'd lost in my old drop ceiling by using the CeilingMax system.

I just installed this system. I put 1x2 blocking up between joists (16" centres) where 2 top hangers butted together. I found this to be more rigid and secure. Although the cross tees provide the spacing between the hangers, the 2'x2' tiles do not quite fit. There is a bit of overlap of the tiles onto the top hanger centre track grove. I had to shave about 1/16" off each tile. Do not install all of the tiles before putting the runners up. It will be impossible to snap them in, no matter how hard you push from the bottom, except directly under a joist. After installing each row of tiles, snap in the runners to complete that row. You will need to grip the top hanger and runner together with your hand with quite a force before they snap together. I was rather surprised how much force I needed. I dread having to remove any of them at a future time.

Having installed this on a basement room which had uneven and unsquare walls, and very warped floor joists, I would not use this system again unless laying it over an existing flat ceiling. It became a shimming nightmares.

What if i was the job was a stick up job and called for tile half way down the walls what formula would you use in that situation

The narrator states that the 2X2 tiles are to be measured the length and then the width. Near the end he says for 2X4 tiles measure the room. Does that mean that the sides are going to be all the same? I have not yet measured my room, so I'm a little puzzled.

What happens if you need to access something in the ceiling? That would be my purpose for this but it doesnt look like there is much room to pop the tiles up and out. So what is the benefit here vs. just doing a drywall ceiling?

Hi Reginald, We apologize that your experience installing CeilingMax was not good. You mention your basement has "uneven and unsure walls, and very warped floor joists." A direct-apply grid system like CeilingMax can not solve these types of problems. Our installation, marketing and sales literature do not claim otherwise. In fact we state that uneven joists will require shims or furring strips. Warped floor joists generally require a suspended grid system, like our HG-Grid product.
