CeilingMAX is a flush mounted system that's perfect for converting your basement or garage into living space, or to simply hide cracks or other problems in any room. It can be mounted to open joists or an existing ceiling and can be obtained online or at many home repair centers.
Always buy a little more than you think you’ll need. You can use either 2x2 or 2x4 tiles made by any manufacturer, allowing for a wide variety of colors and styles.
The unique flush mount system is much easier to install than hanging ceilings often seen in office buildings. Hanging systems require a lot of precision techniques that typically require professionals to install correctly. The flush mount system also allows easy access to pipes and wiring in the space above should a problem develop after installation. In the event of a water leak, replacing a few tiles is a lot easier than replacing sheet rock.
The system consists of 4 components-3 eight-foot pieces called the Wall Bracket, the Runner and the Top Hanger. The forth component is the 2-foot Cross Tee, which provides self-measuring for the rest of the installation after the first row has been completed. Odd-shaped rooms can easily be accommodated by simply cutting down the border tiles to fit. It’s important to carefully plan this portion of the installation as an evenly spaced border is crucial for a professional finished look. The manufacturer provides easy-to-follow instructions complete with tips and tricks of the trade to help just about anyone do the installation.

Bought this system to finish the basement in my old house a few years ago. Worked great and this video was what convinced me to buy the CeilingMAX system. Well done, sir!

Just finished a small basement bathroom using CeilingMax. While it does solve the issue of a low ceiling height, it is not as straightforward as one may think. It is surprising how out of level ceiling joists can be. Take the time to run a line and get everything level and square before you start. Plan ahead and start with the side that has the most obstacles. The final row, and in particular the final panel, will test your patience. Probably best that young ones are not within hearing distance. As for the rocking motion, the problem I had was as I rocked the piece to insert the next panel, quite often the piece fell out. The runners basically do not rock enough to be of help. The design of the cross tee connection could be better. In a basement bathroom setting, I was using a recommended ceiling tile that was a bit heavier, although well within the weight specs of CeilingMax. Once I snapped the runner in place, everything held just fine. For those runners that you can reach above to help snap together, it works fine. On the last row, you can't reach above to assist snapping the runner in place, so it is more difficult. Overall, it solves the problem of low ceiling height but be prepared.

Much better instructions than the manufacturer. Great tip to install border row, then the runner- I have no idea how the manufacturer expects you to install the runner in between two rows of tile.

In my basement the previous owners ran all the wiring at the bottom of the joists instead of drilling holes which means I need to install 1x4 along the entire ceiling which as I think about it may be a good thing because joist placement won't be an issue

The big hint for me was allowing 3/4 of an inch when laying out the runners.

The problem area, especially if you are attaching the grid directly to joists is the last and final row. That final step does not allow you to grasp the hanger strip from behind in order to snap in the final runner piece. Appreciate the video - all other aspects nicely explained. Would be great to see a video for the installation of the final row of tiles.

I am actually trying to install CeilingMax in a small room right now and cannot come to terms with the best way to do that. It is amazing how this video constantly talks about the "rocking" system, but as you install the last row, you have no rocking available. How did the video just skip over that reality? The official video kind of covers this, but I also find those instructions to be stunningly lacking.

I am using 2x4 tiles, and looks like I have to cut of the 12" section to the first notch off each runner to get it going the 48" panes going in the direction I want. Is this correct? Seems like a weird extra step and make working with lots of 12" fill in piece.

Here's a trick if you happen to get your tiles dirty when they are up. Take a cut piece of tile and rub the finish sides together.

Use a wood drill and open up holes in the joists to run the cables through. A small hole won't lead to any structural problems.

@@wheelie642 Sadly you need to take down a good number of the tiles. that is the benefit and Bain of this type of ceiling. With a traditional Drop ceiling you have room above the tiles to move & slide them. With this type of ceiling you need to take down what ever you need to take down to get to problem areas.

@pida9669

Yes it's real, I'm trying to install a CeilingMax grid right now and I'm struggling, but it seems to be mainly because we chose a 3/4" thick tile which is really pushing the limits of the system. I'd recommend not going any more than 1/2" thick or even 1/4" if you want to retain your sanity while installing this product. There is also the competitor CeilingLink system which is very similar but less expensive and online-order only. Cheers.
