Graeme O'Neil takes a look at the reaction to Bob Newhart's death, including from Carol Burnett, Noah Wyle, Al Franken, Julia Duffy, Kaley Cuoco, Mayim Bialik, Zooey Deschanel, Judd Apatow, Lesley Ann Warren, and Rick Mercer.
Forgive me for sounding so old but that era The Bob Newhart, Mary Tyler Moore, Maud, All in The Family, Carol Burnett show, Archie Bunker and Mash were golden era of intelligent, funny and kind comedy that brought people together. Nowadays they would be called woke shows. I wish this generation had diverse shows generations could sit around and watch together. RIP Bob Newhart your comedy and humour will be missed.
78 years old; and spent time the last few days watching you tube videos of some of Bob's old routines. His "phone call" skits will forever remain treasures. Good, clean family comedy in the best and richest sense. Mr. Newhart was a blessing.
Graeme, this is the best tribute to Bob Newhart I've seen; God bless you. I laughed and cried at the end, at the end of your wonderful video here, and at the end of this wonderful life of Bob Newhart here on earth. We were blessed to know him, if only through the tv screen, and are still laughing at his rich legacy of comedy he's left us. Thank you ✨🏆🌹
The last scene with Conan brought a tear to my eye. Bob Newhart was quick and masterful. Now Bob, Norm and Robin are all three trying to "One up" each other in front of a lot of laughing angels. Thanks for all the nights you made me laugh, it got me thru.
Grew up with Bob Newhart. I was born not long after his grammy winning album. We were blessed! You are right Graeme, those were the best days... we watched TV as a family. Throughout the 60's & 70's and into the beginning of the 80's. Whether it was The Bob Newhart Show, Mary Tyler Moore, Archie Bunker, Good Times, Sanford & Son... the list goes on and one. I can hardly stand comedies shows now. We also had excellent variety shows back then too. My 35 year old daughter's all-time favourite show is Golden Girls (and of course we grew up with Maude)... RIP Legend.
This especially saddens me. I loved Bob Newhart because my Aunt Mary and Uncle Jerry introduced him to me. The untold hours in Milwaukee, Ft . Wayne and Sarasota laughing with folks you love so much at a man we loved to watch so much. Litterly last week I fell asleep listening to the Button Down Mind of Bob Newhart. R.I.P. Bob Newhart.
Bob Newhart also starred in the short-lived sitcom "George and Leo" with Judd Hirsch. George was Bob Newhart's birth name. He certainly had his own unique brand of deadpan comedy. He was funny and clean...and intelligent. R.I.P. Bob Newhart. You will be missed, indeed.
You need to watch some of his material here on RU-vid. I've been rewatching his sitcoms, favourite comedy routines like the driving instructor and some of his interviews that are available as well.
Bob Newhart has always been a part of my comedy memories . As a kid, I used to hear some show of his on the radio - and he was so good with his telephone schtick - I could just imagine every thing playing out. That is how my mind formed as I became a writer. Love you Bob!
Very much one of my favourite actors. He was so funny in everything he did. Whether he was in comedy sitcoms or TV cameos, he was funny in all of them. R.I.P. Sir.
Bob Newhart was the GOAT of comedy. The Bob Newhart Show and later Newhart were on-par with the last great sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Checkout his stand-up or look for the comedy records from his early career, those will show he was a pacesetter when comedic talent meant something. Many a-night in my 70s childhood I would watch The Bob Newhart Show before falling asleep for another school day. Thank you for living Bob Newhart.
He was an amazing comedian and actor. My favorite Bob Newhart show episode was when they were drunk trying to order Chinese food and he kept saying Moo Goo Goo Goo!😂
My parents and I privately called him "Sweet Heart." We had no idea how accurate that was. Newhart was one of the few non-animated TV shows I used to videotape.
RIP Bob Newhart you have always been one of favorite comedians. I have a cassette of some of your best skits. My favorite has always been,"The Driving Instructor". Todays comedy is disgusting(my personal opinion). God Bless you and thank you Bob. You have been reunited with Ginnie and your buddy, Don Rickles. Love and Prayers from Canada. 🇨🇦❤️🇺🇸🙏✝️🕊
Many people have forgotten or never knew the end of the Newhart finale was one of the first and best parodies of an episode of Dallas that brought Patrick Duffy's character Bobby Ewing back from the dead. Pure gold! RIP Bob.
My first airplane ride as a teen way back when. The headphones started playing his routine about training a bus driver. The struggle to not laugh out loud almost had me burst a blood vessel.
I imagine it went like this when Rickles meets Bob at the Pearly Gates. "Welcome to heaven, you big hockey puck. Now try not to embarrass me in front of Frank, God, and Johnny Carson. Oh, an never interup Frank when he's correcting Jesus."
Excuse me, but I seem to recall that another comedy album also won the Grammy for Album Of The Year, also well. This happened 2 years later when the Kennedy parody of The First Family by Vaughn Meader also took home the top prize.
Don't think his shows were shown in the UK but I think he was brilliant in the movie Cold Turkey filmed late 60's released 1971 he is so funny alongside Dick Van Dyke and the other great cast members
Great research re his album. Loved his comedy. He never replied on sexual humour or profanity. Very intelligent humour. I think that type of humour is harder.
My parents had a collection of old standup albums from the 60s and 70s. “The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart” was one of my favourites and was the album that kickstarted my love for standup comedy. RIP Funnyman.
