“My wife and I, when we came here we had the idea of working around Australia... I got to Newman and that was me!
She got a job as a social worker, and I started a handyman business. That’s how we got here... and then we became part of Newman.
Over the past few months we have celebrated all of the things that make the town of Newman and our mine great, through a series of videos featuring just some of the individuals who have contributed to the rich tapestry of the mine and surrounding town.
Today we proudly share the final installment in our 50 years of Whaleback series, a heart-warming and special story featuring Paul, or ‘Grandad’, as he’s affectionately known by the locals - a prominent and well-loved personality in the town of Newman.
“Having Ole Grandad’s ice creams is the sweetest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I want to be a good memory to the children as they grow up, long after I’m gone.
It’s about friends, this town has given me a belonging. I’m the luckiest man in the world.”
We hope you’ve enjoyed watching these stories as much as we’ve enjoyed sharing them with you.
