Dollar Tree Challenge- 72 Hour Survival Kit.
If you're wondering, "What should I put in a 72 hour kit?" or "What do I need in an emergency kit?" This video might help.
If you put together a kit like this, I always recommend you rotate and replace things like the food and medications every year or so to keep things from getting wasted or going bad. There are so many types of disasters and emergencies: wildfires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and even just bad storms . In many cases, a 72-hour kit could mean the difference between life and death. After a major disaster or emergency, it could take up to three days for emergency responders to reach some areas. Consider a 72-hour kit that you could live on for 7-10 days if needed. In such a case, if you live in a disaster-prone area, a 72-hour kit is the minimum you should have available. Plan your 72-hour kit according to your family’s size. With a kit like this, you can be prepared on a budget, and ready for anything from power outages to SHTF.

3 thoughts: 1. Would you mind sharing your total cost for that kit? 2. A simple paper notebook and pencil can count as communication (if you had to grab your kit and go, you could leave a note behind for your loved ones to let them know where you are going, etc.). 3. I would also throw in a deck of cards just to have something to do.

I was homeless in TX for nearly three years living in a tent. I ate a lot from DT. I'd add gallon and quart freezer bags for storage of small things and opened packets. Mashed potatoes- put some in a bowl and add little bits of heated water until you get the consistency you want. As time goes on, one can save for a sterno stove (I still have mine) or a camping stove (which made my life vastly different.). Pancake mix labeled just add water, again eyeball the amount and enough water to suit, and have a pancake for breakfast. Syrup doesn't need refrigeration. I had a pour over melitta ($5 at heb grocery store) and I picked up bags of flavored coffees to break up monotony. packets of hot chocolate. I'd add books to read, for kids, coloring books and crayons. Let kids make their own activity boxes. Things can be added as time and money allow. I'm no longer homeless and have an RV. I also have a portable solar power station and just got a Roadpro roaster that's 12volt. Learn to make a solar oven and use it to save on fuel. Kids will love that too. Figure out what to do with waste and trash ahead of time. You did put together a very nice kit. My dollar tree has battery operated switch lights- get them for the bathroom, bedrooms- they're a treat. The 150 lumen work light is very nice to have- attach it to your frig on the outside. You can't have too much light.

Also take the crackers from tuna box, put them in Pringles can & store some plasticware in those cans as well. @LadyWinterHawk14 sadly no once u unseal the bowl you expose the food to bacteria and it becomes the same shelf life of left overs so maybe a week if stored in a fridge. The bowls were heat and vacuumed sealed in the plant to allow the longer shelf life. The can good have such a good life due to being heated so hot while sealing the cans there is no way bacteria could survive in the can unless it gets damaged which is why we are not to keep cans that are popped out or rusted and dented cans should be really inspected that they didn't crack.

I think you did really well. I was going to suggest the shower curtain line in lieu of the plastic, but glad you found it. I also agree with others, a deck of cards, perhaps a pack of dice from the toy section, a notebook and pen, I make my own yahtzee score pads. I found the bags is pre-made refried beans today, I've not had them but many people give the m them a decent review, high protien and enough for 2 meals in my opinion, and it's a decent meal with the packs of ready made Spanish rice. Overall, I'm really impressed. Great job. Please folks, if you've not started a pantry even a few extra cans with your shopping trips can start getting you a stock. And it's not just "apocolyptic" stuff. Example, we have 10 people in our home and 4 are young children, we have been snowed in, completely for 7-9 days at a time the last 2 winters. Thank God for dollar tree shelf stable milk! I cannot stress enough, the value of having extra, just in case.

I just had an Ah Ha moment, my closest DT is still over five miles away, and it’s always wiped out. As I was leaving I realized there’s a large apartment complex next to it, and a trailer park behind it. Just made me realize how convenient it is to walk to for those living so close. There’s another DT about the same distance away just a different direction and it’s always stocked, I prefer the first one as there is road construction to get to the 2nd one, but also it’s a very car dependent area, it’s in a huge shopping center, and no residences that are really walkable. So I guess I will battle the road work, it just takes 2-3 times longer to get to even though it’s about the same distance.

I'm glad you included heat and a fire kit. So many people live in all-electric apartments or homes. After the great Texas blizzard, I made power out kits for two friends who live in all electric apartments. They are not campers so they cannot rely gear that they have tucked away like campers and preppers do. I made them alcohol stoves and included a bottle of alcohol, and I gave them floating oil lamps with a bottle of vegetable oil so that they would be able to have light. (Back in the 70s we called these un-candles.) Please include the price tag you paid for this kit. The problem with shopping at Dollar tree is that those dollars add up very quickly, and it's very easy to overspend. People need to be reminded that they can budget for these things, make a shopping list, buy a few things every payday, and build it over time. The folks living from paycheck to paycheck don't have the additional cash to drop on something like this, making it seem out of reach in which case they don't buy any of it. A follow-up to this would be great showing them to list these items, even having them check off what they already own. And since this is being used as a shelter-in-place kit, you don't need redundancy. Most folks have duct tape, have paper plates, tools, flashlights, candles, etc. By being able to check those items off the list it drops the price of this kit completely.
@MaggieValera
@MaggieValera 19 дней назад
Also, a great thing to have in an emergency is a fondue pot. If it's an old school one you can flip it over and put one of those big liquid heat cans underneath, or better yet an alcohol burner or a buddy burner (tuna can filled with coiled corrugated cardboard then filled with wax).

Studies on starvation revealed that starving humans will eat anything including nonfood items just to relieve the pain of emptiness in their stomachs. An interesting thing they discovered is that a variety of flavor is important - even if you're not fond of a flavor in your prosperity diet. Lack of flavor variation causes 'appetite fatigue" and it can make you not want eat. So spice it up even if you add beef bullion to oatmeal and make a 'beef patty'.

This was a perfect rundown to remind and guide me/someone to get ready for hurricane season, which officially started last week on 6/1. The only thing I would suggest additionally is to put in 3 days worth of any maintenance medications you need, in case you can’t get to your pharmacy. Actually, based on going through 8 hurricanes now (including Andrew, Katrina, Rita and the 2 in 2020 back to back here in Louisiana) if there is a way to put a whole week’s worth of your scripts up in your kit, it’s not a bad idea. Pharmacies work very hard to get up & running after storms, but that doesn’t mean that power is available and roads are passable. There is enough stress and struggle without running out of your maintenance meds.

@@bnbtemple5936We were in the direct path of hurricane Andrew in 1992. It was with a portable radio that we were able to tell when the EYE was almost upon us and it gave us a countdown for the length of the EYE’s passing. Those few precious minutes gave us enough time to throw up wood on a few windows from which the wood had been torn and to check with neighbors. Knowing the EYE was but seconds about to end gave us time to run back to our more secure spot and thank goodness for that because the strike at the end of EYE was devastating.

If you live in a hot climate like I do (Florida) add bug repellent and a battery operated mini Fan. My dollar tree also has mosquito coils and citronella candles. I would add some spices too. Easiest way if you are just getting started, cut a new drinking straw in half, melt one end to seal it. Fill 2/3 full with salt, pepper, garlic or even sugar. Melt the end to seal it and you have portable tubes of spice/sugar. I would add a note pad, cards, or a couple of books. Zip ties and my store sells blue tarps. My store also gas quarts of unscented boeach which us good for cleaning, sanitation, wound care and can be added to tap water to sanitize for drinking.

I've used one of those folding knives for years and highly recommend them. Mine is stainless steel and has a serrated blade. I use it mainly to open boxes - Amazon, etc - but it can also saw through thin branches. I added a loop of rawhide through the hole in the plastic handle to keep it reachable. Darn, I think I'll pick up one for my car and another for my emergency kit!
@aliceh5747
@aliceh5747 5 дней назад
Update: I bought one today (6/22/24), it's basically the same knife with two changes. 1st, manufacturer no longer does all of the final finishing so the two small exposed bolts need some filing with a file (no biggie, time to use those metal files on your nail clippers) to smooth them and 2nd, the blade is much sharper with very pointy edges (maybe). Either mine has really been worn over the past few years or the pointy factor has changed. But it's still a good deal.

Petroleum jelly has more uses than a fire starter. Use it on bruises to clear them up faster; use instead of lip balm and skin softener. It's also good for hemorrhoids, if you don't have Preparation-H about. It's good for cracked feet and rough elbows and also for preventing diaper rash. You can also heat food up with tea light candles. Put your cooking setup in the kitchen sink, if you need to keep it away from kids or pets. Don't store your head-light or flashlights, long term, with the batteries inside, as they will corrode. Jon in rural BC, Canada

Hand warm wipes and towels to bathe with. Solar light stakes are a great addition. We buy a whole flat of them and set out in the yard to charge. They will give off enough light to make a room comfortable, are good personal night lights for the kids to go to sleep with too. Thanks for the good advice. Oh clothes pins come in handy too.

Chalk for marking and notes, a pack of cards or other games and some books and coloring books and crayons, also puzzle books, which $Tree does carry all of these things. Hydrogen peroxide bottle for the first aid kit. It cleans wounds and can sanitize, or be used as an emergency mouth wash, esp. when you have sore gums, some anti diareheal and constipation meds, baby aspirin for anyone who needs it. Also a bottle of rubbing alcohol which can also cleanse wounds, but i was thinking of using it as fuel for the sterno cans should you need extra fuel.

I think most Americans do have enough food and drinks for 72hrs. The amount of snacks many Americans have at home can probably last them weeks😅 I do have enough good quality preps at home but I personally won’t worry about the ingredients too much if I have no prep and need a quick 72hrs kid. You need to take A LOT of those chemicals in long run to cause issues. A couple of meals won’t kill you.

One thing I love about the instant breakfast shakes is they can be a meal replacement in themselves. In a real TSHTF scenario you simply might need to be hidden and concealed. On the flip side you might want to stay as mobile as possible but still stay safe. These shakes allow you to do both. As you’ve often heard it’s sometimes dangerous to stay in one location too long. You need to be as mobile as possible but still be stealthy. And in a pinch so long as you can keep them clean you can always reuse them for extra water storage. Reuse them as containers with a life straw or Sawyer products and you will have the potential of never running out of portable water. That’s the very first thing that will kill you regardless of your status in life (dehydration). How about doing a video about how you can better manage to keep your preps themselves safe?

I agree with the other commenter about looking around your house and putting a few medical and general survival items you already have in a small plastic box. I wouldn't bother about heating food. Breakfasts can be make your own milkshakes with powdered milk & water (or shelf stable milk) & instant coffee or cocoa powder and also have a Granola bar. A lunch of peanut butter or another spread, big crackers and canned fruit for dessert. Dinner a salad of tuna (or something similar), cold baby potatoes from a can and whatever else to add, shelf stable dessert. Healthier things from the snack aisle that are light to carry. Not long term healthy but OK for 3 days ❤
