I can remember my Granny keeping her big bowl of flour ready for biscuit making at all times. Her precious little hands crafted MANY biscuits from that bowl. ❤

I’m glad to see I’m not the only person that gets flour on them when they make biscuits. I haven’t made many biscuits since my husband died 5 years ago, but when my grandson was in school he wanted biscuits and gravy for breakfast most mornings and I’d make them then get ready for work. He wanted fresh biscuits. I kept a tubberware bowl with my left over flour in the refrigerator then I’d add to it, pour my milk in then put my Crisco in and mix it all up with my hands. I baked mine at 500 degrees for 10 minutes and they were done. So glad to see you continuing this tradition and happy your little girl is following in your footsteps. My daughter never took any interest in cooking.

How many biscuits did you make.. looks like people were waiting to taste them.. hopefully you had enough for everyone to sample.. your arms and body must be sore from standing all day and making them.. God Bless you for showing others how to bake and how easy it is to make lard.. l pray more people get back to the old days

Well we did get to go to the Foothills Farm Festival, Thanks Megan and Andy 😊. Have you ever been to the Old Threshers Reunion in Denton,North Carolina? Worked at White Lilys back in 80s when I was a young man, some folks would only use White Lily for their baking,and Three Rivers cornmeal for their cornbread. Take Care and God Bless You Friends 🙂.

That corn harvesting looks good.. will save lots of time... but l enjoy how you hand pick it, open each ear of corn and get joy from finding the good ones, and ones you will keep for seeds..

I'll have to look into traveling up north for it next year, god willing and the creek don't rise. We need to support these kinds of festivals, keeping those skills and traditions central in our lives. I complain all the time about how fast folks are to throw out the "old ways" because we tend to believe newer must be better simply because it's newer. Then we discover that Switchel is far superior to gatorade and the like, or that Yaupon tea is better than the regular black tea we've been drinking all our lives. So many tradition, heritage and culture lost to time because folks either didn't listen to the Storytellers, or listened to the wrong Storytellers. Good on you guys for getting out there and helping keep things alive.

I am gonna try your biscuit recipe. Using ‘lard?’ I will try it, I have failed making good biscuits with all the or her recipes I tried. I only cook for myself. I only need 3 to 4 biscuits at a time. I am not a big left over guy. Ya have a cornbread recipe I could cook in a … 6” skillet?

I went on and added baking powder, baking soda and salt to a second mess and whammo! They were, I guess could be considered, ok biscuits. I need more TAMPERING!

I have never seen biscuits made like you do. We cut in the lard and then mix in the buttermilk just until the dough is still sticky. Turn it out onto a floured board turn the dough over to coat the other side pat out the dough and cut them out. No kneading. I will try your recipe and compare. Love your videos

@TrueGritAppalachianWays
@TrueGritAppalachianWays 10 месяцев назад
I usually scrape out what I can, then wipe it out with a damp rag, after it dries I then put a really thin layer of lard on it. I don’t use soap and water or submerge it because it could cause it to crack
