Celebration of rare white bison birth in Yellowstone comes with a warning 

The Native American myth of the White Bison is a sacred story particularly significant to the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota (Sioux) tribes. When she arrived, White Buffalo Calf Woman gave the Lakota the sacred ceremonial pipe and taught them seven sacred ceremonies, which include practices for purification, healing, and maintaining harmony with the earth. White Buffalo Calf Woman promised to return one day and bring peace and unity to the world. She transformed into a white buffalo calf before leaving, which is why the birth of a white buffalo is considered a sacred and significant event. This rare occurrence is seen as a sign of hope and renewal.

There was a white calf born in Wisconsin in 1994... another white calf born in Jackson, MI not too long after that. I saw both. Nothing happened. There was no increase of peace or unity. I truly wish there would have been, and hope this time there will be. (I'm First Nations)

A lot of bison were killed for their pelts and their carcuses left to rot.

I was in Lamar Valley six times in the last three weeks. Sadly, every other photographer and guide I was able to talk to confirmed that the white calf was not seen again after the day of birth.

I learned about this phenomenon years ago, from of all things, an episode of the XFiles. The white bison calf is a sacred being who must be protected.

In June of 2024, I drove through Oklahoma Kansas and eastern Colorado and observed several herds of buffalo with one to two white Buffalos per herd. I immediately researched and found that the most common cause is inbreeding within the herd.
