Putting aside my distaste for Sarah Silverman m, her point has an ineluctable logic. I think people view this conflict in some abstract plain that takes place outside of reality. Think back to the Civil War. You had men fighting each other who were countrymen, shared a language, and often political and religious views. Yet the idea of Grant allowing "humanitarian" aid into Vicksburg would have been viewed as absurd. Now, imagine lifting the siege of a group of people who were not only temporal enemies-because of decisions made by legislators in a faraway capital-but wanted to exterminate you altogether. Most people would view that proposition as patenly insane.
