Celebrity-Beloved Historic Hong Kong Restaurants Shut, Now Only Old Movies Bring back Memories

The closure of a long-established store in Hong Kong has surprisingly stirred a vast number of netizens. This store, the Malaysian Chinese Restaurant located in Jordan, was founded in 1969 and is particularly famous for its Hainanese chicken rice. More importantly, it has been a filming location for several Hong Kong movies, such as "Throw Down" starring Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-Fai, and "Happy Birthday" starring Louis Koo and Rene Liu. In recent years, many old stores that carry the memories of numerous Hong Kong dramas have shut down.

I feel so sorry for the people of Hong Kong. I was based at Sek Kong 83-86, and loved every minute of it. I was part of the Hong Kong Flying Dragons Skydiving Display Team, which brought me in contact with people who I normally wouldn’t have known. I was hoping when the UK had to give the colony back to China, that things would stay normal. But obviously the Chinese government doesn’t realise how proud and hard working they are.

Grew up in Hong Kong, went to Sha tin Junior International School and left in end 1997 after the handover. Most of the great restaurants left for Taiwan then too. The roast goose & fishball noodles is now in Sanchong now. Never forgotten what a friend of mine said back then. Once the British hand over HK back to China, its over. Why would China work to make HK prosperous when they have ShenZhen? ShenZhen was created to compete with HK. Edit: By the way, the pronunciation of Cantonese words really made me laugh

China is forcing buildings to be taken down and redeveloped so they can keep the construction scams going. All the new buildings will be shoddy and unsafe. The construction scams were the main income source of the CCP. Without these scams, they have to take money directly from bank accounts and that makes it obvious so the CCP wants the construction scams back.

Yeah, Hong Kong lost a lot of it's old charms. Now, just like every other modern city, it looks bland and boring, with equally boring architecture. The mainland washing of Hong Kong pretty killed a lot of it's cultural heritage, and what made it distinct. I'm not saying moving with the times is a bad thing, but if it comes at the cost of what makes it unique, and you just have buildings that basically look like every other city in China, it doesn't feel special anymore. 90's Hong Kong was peak Hong Kong culture IMO, and it steadily got worse from there (especially the cinema, it sucks now).

It's actually not like every other modern city... Korea, Singapore rose from the ashes and Japan has always been #1 destination for travellers around the world.. consistently.... and that's just Asia.. Hong Kongers whine but don't innovate or set up special heritage districts to preserve their culture ... this is a criticism out of love.. it's sad my daughter won't see the Hong Kong I got to grow up in.. but it's not always China.. All the tutoring and children'not having a proper childhood did not produce children that innovate or have the fight of its previous generation... it's getting absorbed by China and it deserves it... if this was America some young entrepreneur would have recreated and repackaged those wontons as hand chopped and sold at Wholefoods for 5 times the price

Just prior to the handover in 1997, I was engaged in conversation with a senior local banker and he told me "you know they will make a mess of the place!" I was shocked because surely that's the last thing they wanted. He continued "the euphoria will disappear once people realise the changes that will come but it may take a decade. The CCP won't allow HK the kind of freedom currently enjoyed to flourish. The issue is potential impact across the border." Crumbs, how right he was 😢 He's retired and left HK for greener pastures elsewhere.

Hong Kong Island and the tip of the Kowloon peninsula were ceded in perpetuity to the British Crown after the 1st Opium War, but the decision was taken long ago to cede the whole colony back to China in 1997 as the Chine has made it clear they'd just take Kowloon and the Island if they weren't handed back. A couple of major western world countries do offer lifeboat for Hong Kong people to immigrant with the government further cracking down on the freedom of speech/press with the establishment of Article 23. You are so right about that. The music, films, TV shows all reflected that golden age period of 1980s-1990s. If only the selfish British government had spent that same period of time developing and installing into the law true democracy, with everyone voting for an elected governor and legislature, that would PERHAPS have helped the situation. On the other hand, the CCP never keeps its promises and lies continuously, so perhaps it would have ended up like this anyway, no matter what. Let this be the ultimate warning to Taiwan. HK resident here, born and raised. These shops close not directly because of the politics, but because of the business is bad here, rapid inflating cost (labor and rent), the strong USD, and the re-opening China border. The price difference across the border is just too high when you can buy similar products/services with less than half the price in China, and countries like Japan is absolutely cheap now. Ultimately you can say it's because of the China-US decoupling, and foreign capital fleeing HK, it's a tragic situation, HK need to find another way. Or China need to have 180 change on HK policy, which I don't think will happen under current leadership.

By the 4th quarter of this year, Country Garden will most likely be forced into bankruptcy like Evergrande. Construction workers in the real estate business make about 12% of the work force. Think of all the uneployment in China now in the construction industry. With so much oversupply, and no reason to build for the forseeable future and no reason to buy new propoerty, China will continue to shrink for the next decade. Look at all the Ghost Towns with some 30 million of unsold homes. We can see multiple years of deflation in China. It is that bad.

I live in Hong Kong (since 1976). The comments here and the main post above don’t give a fair picture of Hong Kong today. It remains one of the safest and most vibrant cities on the earth . The closure of some restaurants doesn’t change that. Some just want to retire (which is what I did myself in 2007)

Instead of these traditional HK chefs they can now employ sewer oil food stall cooks from the mainland
@NoahGooder

now this i can understand because here in the states we have also lost many old restaurants due to time, landlord screwyness, and the results of the cough. Losing your favorite restaurant sometimes feel like you lost a close friend or pet, it hurts deeply because of all the time spent and memories gained.

I found the Kowloon side is different than the HongKong island side . I left that place by end of 1969 and visited there only twice in the late 80's and before 1997. Found it getting from poor to rich to wealthy and now getting the other way around . A recycle of economy ? Seems HK got beat up by Shang Jin , the nearby city in the mainland China . 😲
