Hong Kong’s iconic Jumbo Floating Restaurant has capsized and sunk in the South China Sea after encountering adverse weather conditions. Docked in Aberdeen since 1976, the landmark was moved from the city on June 14, 2022, for a new home in an unannounced place, its owner said. No crew members were injured.

Actually i'm quite sure it was sunk deliberately to get rid of the troublesome property, which would require millions for the restoration and the upkeep. If it was insured for such a thing - then even more so. It's truly sad anway. That was a really famous and significant HK's landmark :(

I went there, the JUMBO floating restaurant in 1994 in the Hong Kong harbor. It looked amazing when lit up at night, not so much at daytime. There was two other big ole floating restaurants to either side, but the JUMBO was the real deal.... Just as seen on the 70's movie Enter The Dragon, a Bruce Lee movie, on the Hong Kong harbor scene. I just remembered, I have a picture of myself at a table eating their tour package meal. They served me some crazy dishes at the JUMBO. I had forgotten I have been to Hong Kong long ago.... This is really astonishing, I have been in that floating restaurant on a few occasions, but here is the funny part, I spoke to a friend of mine telling him the tail of woe, floating restaurant is no more after over fifty years, informing him with great sadnesses, that the restaurant is going to be towed to a unspecified destination, he responded without uncertainty, and this was prior to the towing exercise, they will probably take it out somewhere and scuttle it, that why you will never know the destination, but after they sink they will make one up. Should have bet the house on it.

I like how people are saying it's all an insurance cover up, but they don't account for it being a floating barge in the middle of the sea. Being past its prime, being 46 years old and already seeing the kitchen sink in the harbor, and not being suitable to travel by itself like a boat, let alone travel in the ocean, its not surprising that it sank. Sorry, the ocean isn't calm like a bathtub.
@xander7358
@xander7358 2 года назад
Please do not embarrass yourself. Who tows a floating barge to the middle of the South China Sea and expect it to be safe? It should have been hugging the coastline in calmer waters. Basic common sense.

For a floating seafood restaurant to sink at Paracel Island, definitely sounds fishy! If this structure is to be scrapped it will have to comply with the international ship scrapping rules otherwise, ironically, known as "Hong Kong Convention", which can be a very expensive exercise. Also the location near Paracel Island, surely had some authorities to approve it, since the Chinese are already illegally sitting there.

What’s telling, after the fact that it ‘magically’ survived such voyage in the open ocean till it reached a CCP controlled area, is that there seems to be no video or pics of the event, of the sinking, in this day and age! How convenient 🙄
@belfast4893
@belfast4893 2 года назад
@@V0YAG3R Well such voyage only lasted for 2 days, so it’s not like it travelled for a long journey before deciding to founder on a specific place, it just so happened, which makes sense considering the location of the origin. And what’s so odd about no footage and pics, it’s not like it’s a grand passenger ship with lives involved. Distress call weren’t even made. You heard of of the oil tanker that sank near the coast of Tunisia just last month ? Probably not, there wasn’t any footage of the sinking, so is that a deliberate act again ? Another example would be the El Faro, a US cargo ship lost at sea with actual 0 footage, and only distress call. Ships sinking in the middle the middle of the ocean are not always prone to have footage unless close to populated areas such as the Costa Concoardia, or the shipwreck remains afloat for a suspended long amount of time. Usually the only proof to go with is the actual wreck of distress call, in which since no human lives were involved, the latter does not apply.

do tow ships use three-ship formation or four when towing?

Oh c'mon... Everyone knows in the back of their mind it was sunk intentionally. Seriously... there's some key pieces to the story they do not want to share with the public.

For someone who used to work at South China Sea, you must be mad to just tow it like that. Not stable. The weather there is quite rough, with storm and high sea swell. You need bigger barge to carry it.

If only it was not moved and just kept it to its original place it will not capsized. Really saddening and a lot of precious memories were lost.

They saved millions and had to pay only towing from the area. They to no doubt recklessly disposed of the vessel to avoid increasing losses, stakeholder’s dividends, restoration costs, humiliation from failure, and avoided vessel disposal laws and extremely costly salvage yard costs. Oh so the restaurant sunk? So they loss their vessel at sea? Awww how sad, for who?! I’m sure the owners saved millions. Also, insurance may cover all losses associated with the incident and all the losses. The Owners could feel like they’ve paid the insurance for well over 40 years and it’s also all the money they’ve paid out so it’s only what they contributed over time to the insurance company.

That doesnt seem like the most brilliant of ideas. That boat doesnt look like something that would endure the open sea.

They shouldve docked it somewhere and turned it into a touring attraction instead letting it sunk. The historical value of that ship is priceless.

I am not a betting man but I would be willing to bet that they intentionally took it out to open sea just to dump it. They were tired of paying the docking fees and permits and the closure due to the plandemic. It makes no sense to tow it someplace else just to be refurbished.

Capsized or deliberately sank for insurance and because it would cost more to dispose of then it would if it was sold and so owners don’t need to pay for repairs or docking fees now

Smells like insurance fraud, an unprofitable floating restaurant gets towed towards a "new secret location" to revitalize business but "unfortunately" sinks along the way... Seems rather convenient
